Hello Readers!

Thank you for opening November's issue. I really appreciate your taking the time to look through this mini magazine that I put together full of things that I love and hope you will love, too.

Every day is a day to give thanks in my book, funny little book that I have. We have Thanksgiving November 25th just around the corner to kick off the holiday season. I dug up that gem of a photo and fondly remember laughing so hard when Jamie presented her school project and asked everybody to wear pilgrim and Indian hats. Family gatherings can be stressful or lighthearted and full of joy. Think of a way to bring laughter to the table. Ask your children to help you or get in touch with your inner child.

The holiday season doesn't mean you have to fear over eating or dread the parties. Maybe this is the first year of many you get a handle on how to eat, what to eat, and how not to go through the yo-yo diets of losing and gaining weight ... the story of your life. Maybe this year is the year to make life changes and no looking back.

I am here to serve you as a teacher of yoga, health coach and friend. I want to hear from you.

Food For Thought: Oils and Fats


Not all oils and fats are created equal. Heavily processed, hydrogenated, "trans" fats and oils that are used in prepared, packaged foods can be extremely damaging to the body. However, fats and oils from whole foods and other high-quality sources can steady our metabolism, keep hormone levels even, nourish our skin, hair and nails and provide lubrication to keep the body functioning fluidly. Our bodies also need fat for insulation and to protect and hold our organs in place.

 

A healthy percentage of high-quality fat in a meal satisfies and leaves feelings of energy, fulfillment and warmth. When there are excess fats and oils in the diet, especially heavily processed fats, symptoms can include weight gain, skin breakouts, high blood pressure, liver strain and an overall feeling of mental, physical and emotional heaviness. Signs of insufficient high-quality fats are brittle hair and nails, dry skin, hunger after meals and feeling cold.

 

There are many sources of healthy fats and oils:

       For saut�ing and baking, try butter, ghee (clarified butter) or coconut oil because they do not break down when used at high temperatures.

       When saut�ing foods at moderate temperatures, try organic extra virgin olive oil.

       Oils like flaxseed, sesame, toasted sesame, walnut and pumpkin seed are best used unheated in sauces or dressings on top of salads, veggies or grains.

       Other healthy fats are found in whole nuts and seeds and in their butters like almond butter or tahini.

       Whole foods such as avocados, olives and coconuts are great sources of healthy fat, along with wild salmon and omega-3 and omega-6 organic eggs.

Experiment with these healthy fat sources and see which work best for you and leave you satisfied.

 

When selecting oils, buy the highest-quality organic products you can afford, since cooking oils are the backbone of so many dishes. Good words to look for on the label are organic, first-pressed, cold-pressed, extra-virgin and unrefined. Words to avoid are expeller-pressed, refined and solvent extracted.

Recipe of the Month: Avocado Dip

Prep Time: 3 minutes

Yield: 1 cup

 

Ingredients:

1 large peeled and pitted avocado

2/3 cup plain yogurt, goat yogurt or soy yogurt

1 diced tomato

dash or two of cayenne pepper

sea salt and black pepper

 

Directions:

1.       Mash avocado with a fork until very smooth.

2.       Add yogurt, tomato, cayenne. Blend until smooth. This may be done in a food processor, in a blender or with a fork.

3.       Add sea salt and fresh black pepper to taste.

4.       Serve chilled with mixed raw vegetables.

Note: Best made a maximum of 1 hour before serving.

 

10 Tips For A Healthy Spicy Life

1. Feed your soul with primary food. Friends and family, physical activity, spirituality and a satisfying career feed us. Lack of primary food creates over-reliance on secondary, edible food.

 

2. Drink water. Most people are chronically dehydrated. We often mistake thirst for hunger. If you feel hungry between meals, drink a glass of water before giving into cravings. Limit liquid calories from soda and juice.

 

3. Eat a plant-based diet. Plant foods are typically lower in fat and calories and higher in filling fiber than meat, dairy and processed foods, while providing loads of essential nutrients.

 

4. Chew your food well. Digestion begins in the mouth. By thoroughly chewing your food, your body will better assimilate nutrients; you will also slow down your eating. It takes about 20 minutes for your brain to register that it is full. By slowing your eating, you'll feel full and satisfied on less food.

 

5. Eat real food. Avoid products with high-fructose corn syrup or a long list of unpronounceable ingredients. They tend to be highly processed, lacking the nutrients your body needs, and are often loaded with empty calories.

 

6. Eat breakfast. Skipping meals causes your blood sugar levels to peak and dip, affecting your energy and moods. It can also cause overeating later on because you're so hungry.

 

7. Eat mindfully. Turn off the TV. Get away from the computer. Sit down and savor the food you are eating with no distractions.

 

8. Get moving. Do any type of physical activity every day. Find movement or exercise you enjoy.

 

9. Sleep, rest and relax. When you are sleep-deprived or stressed, your body will crave energy, causing cravings for sugary snacks and caffeine as an energy boost.

 

10. Schedule fun time. Boredom and stress can lead to overeating. Make sure to take time to laugh, play and participate in activities that bring you joy.

Restorative poses are amazing. The pose Shayna is in gently opens the hips, and the shoulders. Her trunk spine in supported by the bolster and her cervical spine is supported by the blanket allowing her chin to be slightly lower than her forehead. This is a wonderful recipe for the body to receive the pose for an extended period of time and feel rejuvenated. Restorative poses ideally are held for 15 minutes or longer for the body to completely relax and allow the parasympathetic nervous system to work its magic. Very nice, Shayna. : )

I chose a twist because twists are great for digestion. This pose stretches the buttocks, and twists the spine relieving back, neck and shoulder tension.  Wait at least two hours after a big meal before attempting a big twist.

Kim Stetz is a Certified Holistic Health Coach, AADP, and Experienced-Registered Yoga Teacher.  Her dedication to health and wellness comes from her passion for yoga and nutritious food.  From the very first time she stepped on a yoga mat in 1992, she knew her life was about to take the path less traveled.  Kim received her nutrition training at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York City. Kim has yoga certifications from OM Yoga, Yoga For Two The Barnes Method (pre/postnatal), Relax and Renew Judith Hansen Lasater, and Anatomy Studies For Yoga Teachers with Jason R. Brown.

Gravitating towards the healing aspects of yoga from the inside out, Kim teaches Hatha Yoga through a mixture of creative and challenging vinyasas, practiced with flow and grace while bringing mindfulness to alignment and the breath.
