Testimonials
"I meant to
tell you that I felt so awesome after our session Friday... My legs felt a little
weak and wobbly for a couple of hours but that wore off and my body felt
amazing at my softball game. I felt like I regained athleticism that I
have lost as I've gotten older. I hit a ball about 20 feet over the fence
in left field. Now that I see the potential I can't wait to do more!" Dr.Jan Lefkowitz,
35, chiropractor, enthusiastic yogin beginner
"Practicing with Kim is
an oasis in my responsibility-and stress-filled days. She brings light and
peace with her into my home, and helps me achieve confidence and happiness in
my practice through her articulate instruction, attention to alignment and
enthusiastic support of my movement and my journey." Roxanne, 45, public
relations executive, mother of two, has it going on
"I have been
practicing yoga with Kim for over 5 years now. It began with vinyasa yoga
which was a wonderful break from going to the gym. Kim helped me recover
from ACL surgery and my husband recover from back surgery with
strengthening and stretching sessions that were more therapy than yoga and
demonstrated her extensive knowledge of the body. Over the past few years we
did pre and post natal yoga through two pregnancies. Over the course of
the past 5 years Kim has become a great friend who is always there to listen,
offer a new perspective, and give advice on how to better take care of
yourself."
Elizabeth, 31,
interior design, world class mom
"Kim taught me that it
was important to take time
out of my busy schedule to breathe. The result was
less pain and stress and finally an end to my sleepless nights." Amy, 35, author, artist, Renaissance woman

Food For Thought: Proper Alkaline-ment
Who wants to talk about their blood? This won't be gruesome
I promise. Let's start with the basics of blood pH. The pH (balance between acid and alkaline) of the bodily
fluids, including the blood, should be slightly alkaline at 7.365. The American
medical establishment accepts 7.4.
According to Robert O. Young, The
pH Miracle, 7.4 is too alkaline and indicates tissue acidification. An
alkaline/acid imbalance towards too much acidity invites all kinds of viruses,
yeast, cancer cells, and parasites to thrive. In an acidic environment oxygen
levels are low providing optimum conditions for all the nasty stuff we don't
want to fruitfully multiply. Acidity also leads to conditions such as chronic
fatigue, AIDS, allergies, and arthritis just to name a few. The typical American diet is loaded with foods that cause
our bodies to become acidic. When pH levels are acidic, your body wants to be
in an alkaline state. In order to achieve this your body draws stored reserves
of alkaline minerals such as sodium, calcium, potassium and magnesium. If you
continue eating foods that are highly acid-forming, even more essential
minerals are depleted from you system eventually creating a mineral deficiency. The obvious solution to this problem is to eat alkaline-forming
foods. You don't have to eat all alkalizing foods all of the time because
that's not balanced either. Donna Gates, The Body Ecology Diet, expert suggests
eating meals that are 20%/80% acid/alkaline ratio. Not all acid foods are bad. We need acid forming foods. Your
choice of food and food combining is what stirs the intestinal pot. Your acid
forming foods are largely made up of macronutrients meaning they provide either
protein, carbohydrates or fat. Alkaline forming foods also provide macronutrients,
but in addition, your fruits and veggies are chock full of micronutrients which
is where the body gets its vitamins and minerals from. If you are eating 80%
of your foods as alkaline forming, your plate will be very colorful and full of
micronutrients, which means full of vitamins and minerals. Don't worry, you
will get enough protein, carbs and healthy fats as well.
You can test your pH levels right at home by using pH testing strips. The strips can be found at health food stores, or purchased on line. Give it a try!
For a list of alkaline and acid forming foods, please click this link. http://www.rense.com/1.mpicons/acidalka.htm Note
that a food's acid or alkaline forming tendency in the body has nothing to do
with the actual pH of the food itself. For example, lemons are very acidic,
however the end products they produce after digestion and assimilation are very
alkaline so, lemons are alkaline forming in the body. Likewise, meat will test
alkaline before digestion, but it leaves very acidic residue in the body so,
like nearly all animal products, meat is very acid forming.

Apple Crisp!!!
It's apple picking time and I go apple
picking every year with my sister and nieces. Hence the silly smiling
faces in the apple stockade. I've
converted my mom's original recipe as it is a zillion years with too
much sugar and butter for my liking. I've updated the recipe to a healthier version
using all organic products. However, I don't think Masker's Orchard is organic,
but we picked 'em with love.
THE APPLES 3/4 Cup Turbinado Sugar 1 Tbl Organic Unbleached Whole Wheat or White Flour 1 Tsp Cinnamon Stir with 8 cups of peeled, cut apples. I cut mine into large bite sized pieces. Macks are great, or any firm apple. You can mix Granny Smiths in there for more tartness. Avoid "Delicious" - too mushy.
THE TOPPING 1 Cup Brown Sugar 1 Cup Oatmeal 1 Cup Organic Whole Wheat or White Flour 1/2 Cup Organic Softened Unsalted Butter 1/4 Tsp Baking Soda 1/2 Tsp Aluminum Free Baking Powder Get in there with your clean hands and mush it together
Heat oven to 350 Put apple mixture in a 8"x11" or 9" square dish. No greasing necessary. Add topping and pat it down Bake until you see the goop bubbling, this is the crispy part. About 40 minutes to an hour. Your house will smell amazing, too!

Kula Corner (kula = community of the heart) Featuring Liz Beuhler, co-owner Yoga High, NYC.

KS: What style yoga do you teach?
LB: I teach Vinyasa Yoga. I love to move, I love using fun and
inspiring music when practicing and teaching, and I love the creativity and
variety of poses that Vinyasa offers. Also, of course, the focus on breath in
Vinyasa Yoga is what makes it truly transformative. KS: What asana are you into lately?LB: Well, because I am 6.5 months pregnant my practice has changed A
LOT, which has been very interesting. I am really into some of the more basic
and restorative poses right now like Prasarita Padottonasana and Gomukasana.
Also, Janu Sirsasana has always been one of my faves - I can feel the ancient
history and tradition of the practice in that pose. And forearm stand is my
all-time favorite pose for the balance of openness and strength it requires and
for the feeling of empowerment it always brings. KS: Favorite retreat place? LB:Every year I teach a retreat with my Yoga High partner, Mel
Russo, at Jake's Hotel in Jamaica. It takes a little extra work because they
are not strictly a retreat venue, but it is so worth it. They already had a
very cool reputation as an artsy resort, and we were the first Yoga retreat to
go there. So it feels like family for us.
KS: What did you eat for lunch today? LB:I'm on vacation at the beach so we had crackers, cheese, hummus
and delicious fruit salad (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and plums)
down on the beach.
KS: When did you go to bed last night and what did you wear? LB:Went to bed at about midnight after a wonderful dinner and great
conversation with my husband and friends down here at the beach house. I wore a
comfy cotton nightgown from Gap Body - super soft.
KS: Thank you, Liz. I absolutely love Liz's teaching and her energy! She is very attentive with her students as well as fun. She and Mel Russo co-own Yoga High located in the lower east side of Manhattan. I am excited to feature a pregnant teacher and share her thoughts on how she is maintaining her practice. Liz has taken back bending out of her practice, but still does forearm balance. Way to listen to your body and take care of yourself and the baby!
If you are pregnant please seek advice for poses that are contraindicated during pregnancy (twisting, back bending) to name a couple. I am a pre-natal teacher, feel free to write. |

Asana of the Month Salamba Sirsasana variation with hanumanasana supported headstand with split pose (supported by my arms as opposed to just being on my head)
Click here for Yoga Journal's guidance
Please be mindful with your practice especially with inversions. When we are upside down, our perspective on where we are in space is askew. What your breath and check your ego. Asanas can be very humbling.

What's steeping? French Lemon Ginger - A breath of fresh air, organic ambrosia is the answer to a clean fresh cup. Combining lemon verbena, lemongrass, botanicals, and ginger complimented with the sweetness of South African honeybush. Caffeine Free
Did you know? *Honeybush tea is made as a simple herbal infusion. One of its early recognized benefits as a tea substitute is its lack of
caffeine, which makes it especially suited for nighttime consumption and
for those who experience nervousness and want to avoid ordinary tea.
As a result, it had a reputation as a calming beverage, though it may
not have any specific sedative properties. It also has a low content of
tannins, so it doesn't make a highly astringent tea, which can be a
problem with some grades of black or green tea or when ordinary tea is
steeped too long.*
*Lifted off the web - HONEYBUSH, Healthful beverage tea from South Africa by Subhuti Dharmananda, Ph.D., Director, Institute for Traditional Medicine, Portland, Oregon
I discovered Art of Tea three years ago while in Los Angeles. "Velvet", an original blend of rooibos, chocolate and mint with a hint of vanilla simply put, was a symphony in my mouth. Their teas are organic, fair trade, and I have been a fan and ordering ever since. Click here for Art of Tea website.
