Testimonials

"I meant to tell you that I felt so awesome after our session Friday... My legs felt a little weak and wobbly for a couple of hours but that wore off and my body felt amazing at my softball game.  I felt like I regained athleticism that I have lost as I've gotten older.  I hit a ball about 20 feet over the fence in left field. Now that I see the potential I can't wait to do more!"  Dr.Jan Lefkowitz, 35, chiropractor, enthusiastic yogin beginner

"Practicing with Kim is an oasis in my responsibility-and stress-filled days. She brings light and peace with her into my home, and helps me achieve confidence and happiness in my practice through her articulate instruction, attention to alignment and enthusiastic support of my movement and my journey."   Roxanne, 45, public relations executive, mother of two, has it going on

"I have been practicing yoga with Kim for over 5 years now.  It began with vinyasa yoga which was a wonderful break from going to the gym.  Kim helped me recover from ACL surgery and my husband recover from back surgery with strengthening and stretching sessions that were more therapy than yoga and demonstrated her extensive knowledge of the body. Over the past few years we did pre and post natal yoga through two pregnancies.  Over the course of the past 5 years Kim has become a great friend who is always there to listen, offer a new perspective, and give advice on how to better take care of yourself."

Elizabeth, 31, interior design, world class mom

"Kim taught me that it was important to take time out of my busy schedule to breathe.

The result was less pain and stress and finally an end to my sleepless nights."

Amy, 35, author, artist, Renaissance woman

Liquid For Thought:Water

water

Most of us are aware of the importance of drinking enough water. Getting our daily dose of water helps our organs perform their functions, keeps our skin clear and hydrated, and allows physical action in our bodies to flow smoothly. Even with this knowledge, it can still be challenging to drink all the water our bodies deserve daily. In the summer, when we tend to play hard, sweat and spend prolonged time in the sun, drinking plenty of water is critical. Those who are not drinking enough may experience poor digestion, sluggish thinking, skin breakouts, headaches, bad breath and general fatigue.

To start your day right, set a large glass of water by your bed each night and drink it when you wake up. I like to put a squeeze of lemon or lime in mine. Having lemon or lime in your water gets your gastric juices flowing. Drinking water first thing in the morning pulls out toxins from the previous day and freshens your system for the day ahead. Keep a bottle of water accessible throughout the day, whether you are on the go or at a desk. Having a bottle of water close by will remind you to take a sip when thirsty. The first sip will usually let you know how much more water you need. A sip or two may be enough, or you may need a big glass. If you drink most of your daily water before early evening, you most likely will not be thirsty before bed. This is good, because drinking before bed and then waking to use the bathroom disturbs your peaceful night's sleep.

The key is to like the taste of the water you are drinking, and the water should agree with your body. If the taste of plain water is unappealing, experiment to see how you can make it tasty and drinkable. Try adding a few mint leaves, a wedge of lemon, a sprig of parsley, slices of cucumber, a twist of lime or a squeeze of orange to make water more tempting, or to jazz up your routine. Also, drinking tea or juice and eating raw fruits and vegetables contribute to the hydration process. So, splash in the waves, swim in the sun, drink plenty of water and enjoy the summer fun!

Kula Corner  (kula = community of the heart)
Featuring (eh hem) Anthony Benenati, Founder City Yoga, LA

KS: What style yoga do you teach?anthony B
AB: I teach Hatha Yoga. I think people are way too caught up on "style". I have studied in all the major "styles" of hatha yoga including 10 years with Anusara, but I realized that teaching one style limits both the teacher and the student. A great teacher will fit the yoga to the student, not the student to the yoga.

KS: What asana are you into lately?
AB: Hanumanasana and Eka pada rajakapotasana 4... I have tight hips and these poses rock my world. I expect nothing less from Hanuman!
KS: Favorite retreat place?
AB: With 3 kids, I haven't been on retreat in a while...but it used to be St. Lucia! Amazing island and people.
KS: What did you eat for lunch today?
AB: Usually a yummy sandwich on Hawaiian bread! I LOVE that bread!
KS: When did you go to bed last night and what did you wear?
AB: I'm up most mornings by 4:30 to run so I like to get in bed before 10. I have these old surgeon's pants that I got in the hospital when my son was born...they are very worn and very cozy...
KS: Thank you. Anthony is the reason I became a yoga teacher. He is the first yoga teacher I truly connected with - he is my guru - the one who brought me into the light. Three months into going to his classes, he told me with absolutely certainty, I would teach yoga. Seven years after his proclamation, I wrote to him asking for his blessing to apply to yoga teacher training. Yearly I visit friends in Los Angeles, never is there a time when I don't make Anthony and City Yoga a part of my journey. Maha love.

Camel Pose

Heart opening back bend

Beginner's Tip

Beginners very often aren't able to touch their hands to their feet without straining their back or neck. First, try to turn your toes under and elevate your heels. If this doesn't work, the next thing to do is to rest each hand on a block. Position the blocks just outside each heel, and stand them at their highest height (usually about 9 inches). If you're still having difficulty, get a chair. Kneel for the pose with your back to the chair, with your calves and feet below the seat and the front edge of the seat touching your buttocks. Then lean back and bring your hands to the sides of the seat or high up on the front chair legs. - Yoga Journal

art of teaWhat's steeping? Ginger Ginseng
An herbal blend of ginger, ginseng, chamomile, rosehips, orange peel and mint. Caffeine free. Steep time: 5-7 minutes
The dried ginger root is a thermogenic, expectorant, laxative, appetizer, stimulant, as well as an effective cure for stomach disorders. Hence, the dried ginger root is ground and used to cure a whole range of ailments like coughs, colds, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, inflammations of the joints, flatulence, motion sickness, colic, cholera, asthma, headaches, and even anorexia. Sounds to me like ginger can cure what prescription drugs warn against as potential side effects.

Treatment claims for Asian ginseng are numerous and include the use of the herb to support overall health and boost the immune system. Traditional and modern uses of ginseng include:

  • Improving the health of people recovering from illness
  • Increasing a sense of well-being and stamina, and improving both mental and physical performance
  • Treating erectile dysfunction, hepatitis C, and symptoms related to menopause
  • Lowering blood glucose and controlling blood pressure
Pregnant or lactating women should avoid ginseng.

I discovered Art of Tea three years ago while in Los Angeles. "Velvet", an original blend of rooibos, chocolate and mint with a hint of vanilla simply put, was a symphony in my mouth.  Their teas are organic, fair trade, and I have been a fan and ordering ever since. The Quirks and Perks of Coffee
I am stating for the record that I am not a caffeine drinker and have not been for 15 years. I believe the cons of drinking caffeine far outweigh the benefits and the benefits listed can be received through healthy lifestyle and not caffeine. I thought it only fair to the reader to present an opposing view to my own.

Caffeine - Top 10 Quirks

1. Cardiovascular Problems

Caffeine increases heart rate, elevates blood pressure and can contribute to the development of heart disease. Drinking both decaf and regular coffee may increase cholesterol and homocysteine, the biochemical that science has linked to increased risk for heart attack. Caffeine is also linked to coronary vasospasms. Coronary vasospasms cause 20% of all fatal heart attacks that kill otherwise perfectly healthy people.

2. Stress

Caffeine stimulates the excretion of stress hormones, which can produce increased levels of anxiety, irritability, muscular tension and pain, indigestion, insomnia and decreased immunity. Increased levels of stress can keep you from making healthy responses to normal daily stress.

3. Emotional Disturbances

Anxiety and irritability are hallmark mood disturbances associated with caffeine consumption, but equally important are depression and attention disorders. Depression may occur as part of the letdown after the stimulant effects of caffeine wear off. It may also appear during the recovery period after quitting caffeine while the brain's chemistry is readjusted. Rather than increasing mental activity, caffeine actually decreases blood flow to the brain by as much as 30% and negatively affects memory and mental performance.

4. Blood Sugar Swings

Diabetics and hypoglycemics should avoid caffeine. Caffeine stimulates a temporary surge in blood sugar followed by an overproduction of insulin, which causes a blood sugar crash within hours. This rollercoaster causes weight gain since insulin's message to the body is to store excess sugar as fat.

 5. Gastrointestinal Problems                                                  Many people experience a burning sensation in their stomach after drinking coffee because coffee increases the secretion of hydrochloric acid, which leads to an increased risk for ulcers. Coffee, including decaf, reduces pressure on the valve between the esophagus and the stomach so that the highly acidic contents of the stomach pass up to the esophagus, which can lead to heartburn and gastro-esophageal reflux disease.

6. Nutritional Deficiencies

Caffeine inhibits the absorption of some nutrients in addition to causing the urinary excretion of calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, trace minerals and all essential elements necessary for good health.

7. Male Health Problems

Milton Krisiloff, MD, has found that in the majority of cases, men can significantly reduce their risk for urinary and prostate problems by making dietary changes, which include eliminating coffee and caffeine.

8. Female Health Problems

Fibrocystic breast disease, PMS, osteoporosis, infertility problems, miscarriage, low birth weight and menopausal problems such as hot flashes are all exacerbated by caffeine consumption. Women on birth control pills are particularly at risk since they tend to have a decreased ability to detoxify caffeine.

9. Aging

Many people find that in their 40s, they can no longer tolerate the same level of caffeine consumption they could in their 20s and 30s. Production of DHEA, melatonin and other vital hormones decline with age, but caffeine speeds up that process. Caffeine dehydrates the body and contributes to aging of the skin and kidneys. It has been shown to inhibit DNA repair and slow the ability of the liver to detoxify foreign toxins.

10. Adrenal Exhaustion                                                   Caffeine consumption leads to eventual adrenal exhaustion, which can leave you vulnerable to a variety of health disorders related to inflammation and fatigue.

Caffeine - Top 10 Perks

1. Alertness

Even in relatively low doses of 100 milligrams (the amount in about 8 ounces of ordinary brewed coffee), caffeine makes people more alert.

2. Mood

At 200 milligrams people report an improved sense of well-being, happiness, energy, alertness and sociability.

3. Concentration

Studies suggest that caffeine can help you perform a variety of cognitive tasks, such as recognizing visual patterns, more quickly.

4. Performance

Research shows if 3-9 milligrams of caffeine per kilogram of body weight is consumed one hour prior to exercise it increases endurance.

5. Reduce muscle pain

Stanley Segall, Ph.D., has found that caffeine might stimulate the release of B-endorphins and hormones that depress the sensation of pain or discomfort.

6. Treat headaches and increases effects of medications

Caffeine constricts blood vessels and helps the body absorb medications more quickly, which is why it is added to some pain medications.

7. Prevent diabetes

Coffee contains minerals and antioxidants which help prevent diabetes. Frank Hu, M.D., one of the authors of The Harvard Study, theorizes it may be because caffeine stimulates muscles to burn fat and sugar more efficiently.

8. Increase your antioxidants intake

Antioxidants in caffeine help to stabilize free radicals and stop them from doing damage. If a free radical is formed in a cell and nothing is done, it can damage the DNA of the cell.

9. Dodge diseases

Caffeine keeps the dopamine molecules active, preventing diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease. Harvard researchers have found that men who drink four cups of caffeinated coffee a day are half as likely to develop Parkinson's disease as those who refrain from consuming caffeinated beverages.

10. Bring relief to asthma

Drinking a moderate amount of caffeine can be therapeutic for people with asthma. Caffeine in the form of coffee may be used to prevent an asthma attack in emergency cases, but is not intended to replace medication.
