The Fertile Soil Women Possess.
Reaping What We Sow. I Say Sow Knowledge, Inspiration and Passion.
I've been thinking a lot about my "stuff" lately. It's importance to me, or my hopes that I can give it less importance. How conflicted I have been about my "stuff". Love it. Hate it. Joy or burden? What's stuff have to do with the mortgage crisis, $700 Billion bail out, $3 Trillion dollars in 401K and pension dollars lost, foreclosures and the popularity of MTV's show, My Super Sweet 16.
If you are a mother of a tween or teen girl you may be familiar with this "My Super Sweet 16" reality show. The premise is to document spoiled brats and spineless parents giving their daughters the ultimate Sweet 16 birthday parties, sparing no expense and no shame in spoiling their daughters. It pained me to watch an episode where the "sweet" 16 year old throws a fit when gifted the wrong color Lexus.
Here's the real kicker. MTV now has sequels where they exile the spoiled brats to remote villages to teach them a lesson. I say exile the spineless parents.
Still as I write this I must confess, I feel I indulge my children. Too busy organizing my stuff, paying bills for my stuff, cleaning the big house that houses all my stuff, spending time at work so they can sell more stuff, and so tired from maintaining the flow of stuff that I don't always give my children what they really need. Worse of all, too preoccupied and tired to give my children time, in turn, substituting it with stuff.
"I CURSE THE EVILS OF STUFF!"
(This would be a good place to insert some fun stuff by George Carlin)
Ok take a deep breath Kim. Maybe you are being a bit too hard on yourself. Vow of poverty? No, but how about finding some middle ground.
Well, it just so happens that I came across this little movie called "The Story of Stuff" by Annie Leonard.
Stuff isn't evil. It's just that too much stuff is smothering our fertile soil.
If you are looking for some middle ground, I recommend watching this 20 minute movie. It gives you a good dose of awareness about the interdependencies between making stuff, distributing stuff, consuming stuff and disposing of stuff. I found it to be entertaining as well.
As I watched Annie narrate, I had an OH Yes moment. It's always been appropriate to sow the seeds of knowledge, inspiration and passion, but now is a time when I feel people are more open to accepting it.
We can continue to sow an over abundance of stuff, or we can create a more balanced crop, by choosing to sow more knowledge. As women we possess very fertile soil. We must sow. We will reap. We must sow. We will reap. It is a continuous process. We all have our own weeding to do, but we also have a responsibility to cast, out the windows of our traveling sanctuaries, seeds of knowledge, inspiration, passion, and wisdom. Oh what we will reap from our fertile soil.
"STUFF, YOU ARE OFFICIALLY ON NOTICE."
Rules for my stuff
-
If you do not inspire me to sow seeds of knowledge, inspiration and passion you most likely will be kicked to the curb.
-
You will only co-inhabit with new stuff if the new stuff passes the spreading joy, shredding fear and having fun test.
-
I accept that I will have "want that new stuff" weak moments.
-
I will respectfully apply these new rules to my family's stuff in small doses.
Hey did I mention that you should watch this 20 minute movie? "The Story of Stuff" |
Less Stuff! More Joy! Less Stuff! Less Fear! Less Stuff! More Fun!

Follow up to an Inspiring Story... Bringing families together having fun.
Red Wing Universal Playground

AND FINALLY THEY CAN REALLY PLAY TOGETHER OUTSIDE...
This past Saturday, Red Wing's new Universal Playground was officially opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
Our fellow Modern B*A*G Ladies, Heather and Audra were the last to speak at this ceremony. They made a great team getting this whole project rolling and seeing it through to the end.
As Heather contested, "Audra is great. She is so well spoken and organized." I have to say I think Audra gave the best speech that morning, talking over the laughter of children playing. Such poise and calm in her voice.
Many spoke before them, talking about how these two mothers came together with a vision and hope that families could come together and play together without the restrictions presented by other playgrounds for all with various mobility obstacles.
Thanks Heather and Audra for being an inspiration to us all.
