Friends and Colleagues:
The first few weeks of school are always a special pleasure. I spend a considerable amount of time welcoming new classes back to the college, and it is always thrilling to meet the people who choose to come here. Keith Motley's Chancellorship adds a special dimension to this period, since his tremendous enthusiasm for UMass Boston and for our students is widely visible and hard to resist. More importantly, Chancellor Motley has elected to use his welcome back Convocation speeches as guide posts for his long-term vision of what the University of Massachusetts Boston is, and will become. This year's Convocation focus was on the central role of research, joining "student-centered," "urban" and "public" as defining elements of our university.
A few other notes:
· I'm delighted to announce that I have selected Ellen Bruce, J.D., to serve as the next Director of the Gerontology Institute. She has done an admirable job as Interim Director, served ably as Gerontology Department Chair, and has been an active academic and practical leader on issues of pension reform and security. Ellen has big energetic ideas for the Institute and I look forward to working with her.
· Noted biographer and McCormack Senior Fellow Nigel Hamilton, has recently published American Caesars, Lives of the Presidents from FDR to George W. Bush. See his great interview on MSNBC and come to his talk and book-signing Thursday, October 7th, 3:00 PM.
· Dr. Maria Ivanova, Assistant Professor at our department of Conflict Resolution, Human Security and Global Governance, has been selected as a coordinating lead author for the landmark environmental publication of the United Nations - the Global Environment Outlook (GEO-5). The Global Environment Outlook is a global, consultative, and participatory environmental assessment process that reviews the state of the environment, analyzes trends and future outlooks, and suggests policy options. She has only been here for 2 weeks! Congratulations Maria.
· Our Ethnic Newzwire program, led by Frank Herron, got wonderful recognition in a new book called Understanding Ethnic Media. Check pages 235 and 264.
· Last year we unable to successfully fill the faculty position in the Department of Public Policy and Public Affairs, which was left vacant by our esteemed Dr. Alan Clayton-Matthews. We are back into the search market; I hope you will help us find great candidates for this position. We've had enormous success with our new faculty over the last 4 years, and want to keep that success going.
· Our new Department of Conflict Resolution, Human Security and Global Governance is continuing the Dispute Resolution tradition of a biennial Conflict Studies Conference, convening students from around the world from many disciplines, on October 22nd-23rd. Presenters this year come from 21 different countries, with keynote speaker Paul Hughes, Director, USIP Non-Proliferation and Arms Control Project, and Executive Director, Quadrennial Defense Review Independent Panel. Please check it out and I hope you can attend.
· For those interested in careers in international development and service, join the Office of International and Transnational Affairs on September 28th to meet the COO of USAID.
Enjoy the Fall weather.
