Nigel Hamilton has been associated with the McCormack Institute/Graduate School of Policy Studies for over two decades, first as the John F. Kennedy Scholar, then UMass Boston Visiting Professor, and more recently resident Senior Fellow. During that time he has researched and written three major best-selling political biographies - JFK: Reckless Youth; Bill Clinton: An American Journey; and Bill Clinton: Mastering the Presidency. He also published two important works on life writing: Biography: A Brief History, and How To Do Biography: A Primer. Now he has a new book coming out, and possibly his best: American Caesars.
American Caesars: Lives of the Presidents, from Franklin D. Roosevelt to George W. Bush is modeled on perhaps the most famous biographical work of ancient Rome, The Twelve Caesars by Suetonius, written almost two thousand years ago, at the height of the Roman empire. Hamilton's new book is a spell-binding narrative, in twelve chapters, of the men who have, in similar fashion, led the world's dominant military and economic empire, since it was established by FDR in World War II. The first U.S. pre-review in Booklist has welcomed Hamilton's twelve "opinionated but acutely insightful" chapters on our Caesars' public and private lives - adding that "Hamilton's effrontery in mimicking Suetonius pays off in irreverent, pedestal-toppling prose." We therefore proudly invite you hear Nigel talk about his new work on the evening of October 7, from 3:00-5:00 PM in the Chancellor's Conference Room (Quinn Building 3rd Flr), followed by questions, book signing, and refreshments.
