Message from the Dean
Friends and Colleagues: It's mid-August, the Red Sox lead for the wild card, and we're getting ready to go back to school. Hopefully your summer was refreshing, despite being a bit damp. We have spent a lot of time in the last few months developing an administrative reorganization of the academic side of the college, beginning with recruitment of a new Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs. We have good applicants, and hope to make that decision soon. The Massachusetts Ocean Partnership, helping to facilitate an integrated, multi-use ocean management plan for Massachusetts coastal waters, won a $1M endowment from the Office of the UMass President. Thanks especially to Robbin Peach for pursuing this and to the flexibility of both UMass President and UMass Boston administrations for moving quickly to get it done. And we are pleased to announce that MGS has now been joined by Dr. Adenrele Awotona's Center for Rebuilding Sustainable Communities after Disasters. This is yet another dimension to our presence in global affairs--a presence we will begin to consider expanding further. Be sure to read the article about the New England Ethnic Newswire from MassInc's "Commonwealth" Magazine, led by Frank Herron from the Center on Media and Society. It is a great initiative to support the development of strong ethnic media in our region. Enjoy the last few lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer.
