Hey All,

I have been thinking about motivation around weight loss of late. What motivates us and what happens that causes motivation to wane? I find it intriguing that it is such an ephemeral mindset, and would like to become more knowledgeable on whether one can manifest it at will.

Over the years of having endless meetings and conversations around this topic I have come to a big conclusion. This is my take on the topic. If yours differs I would love to hear from you.

I think we become motivated via negative and positive sources. What I mean by that is, we could find that spark of motivation to lose weight from a photo of ourselves in which we look infinitely heavier than we fancied ourselves to be. The "ugh factor" raises its lovely head, if you catch my drift. And that can incite action. Negative motivation. Another negative motivator is illness or poor overall health. The doctor tells us we have to lose weight or we are looking at dying soon, and suddenly something clicks and we are facing it head on. Not uplifting, not profound, hard cold reality slaps you in the face and says "let's do it". I will share my most negative motivator: a man I liked very much told me he could never date me because I was too heavy. I felt so dejected, but then I decided I never wanted to hear that again, and it lit a fire under me big time.

Positive motivation comes from other resources. We see our friends who have lost a lot of weight and they inspire us to act. Or we actually sit down and watch the movies or read the books people have been talking about, and they get us fired up to take action. Maybe we find a spiritual or more inward path which shifts our perspective on the whole issue and that takes us in a direction we never imagined. Sometimes we are not motivated at the outset, but go for it anyways, and find the motivation as we begin to see results.

Either positive or negative motivation can get us to act. And there is something almost magical that can happen when we are really ready. Food is not as interesting, or rather as tempting as it had been. We are able to eat less and feel satisfied. We say no enough times to certain foods that eventually they become non-issues for us. We are floating on happiness of seeing our bodies change, our energy shift, and our powerful self make a showing for a change. Wow!!

This state can last for months, a year, even longer in some people. The first time dealing with weight loss is the longest. Subsequent efforts are generally shorter in duration, unless one tries a new program. The excitement of a new formula and a different tack to take can spark it again like the first time.

But why does it disappear to begin with? Well many factors come into play here. Boredom can play a part; "eating my nice, safe foods...I would die for a cheeseburger!" Rebellion is a big one; "f#$%^& it to dealing with this stuff". A trip or event which sidelines the efforts can be the starting point for a tumble off the wagon. And then the "story" we tell ourselves that "since I ate that, well then the day (week, month) is shot" solidifies the indiscretions.

Every example there is based on the same simple premise: I am dieting. I know some of you reading this will disagree with me. You'll say, "but I do not look at this as a diet: I look at it as a lifestyle change. And yet I have not lost weight in months and am totally non-motivated". Well, so here's where I am challenging your thinking. If you are bored by it, rebellious of it, or willing to let go of it because of a few enticing experiences then you have not embraced it as truly being a lifestyle change for you.

Let's face it. If it were a lifestyle change you would eat differently, and eat less. You would ratchet up the exercise at every opportunity. Boredom would not come into play because you were now "eating this way", so you would get creative on keeping it interesting and fresh. Rebellion would not be necessary because why rebel against something you truly embrace. You would not deny yourself the occasional indulgence, but do it carefully, mindfully, and with never a doubt it would be that day but not the next.

I hope I am not angering you, but rather inspiring you to shift your focus. Shift from the negative: "I can't have" to the positive "I don't want or need that". Shift from the mindset of "I should...", to "I want to". And if all of this sounds too idealistic and impossible then look at that belief. If you hold that as being true for you, then guess what?

This week your homework is to find inspiration and motivation. Go to a meeting (I would love it if it were one of mine!!), read a book, watch a movie (list below), talk to a sparky friend. Take action to make a shift. My rant is based on not just my experiences but hundreds of people I have know throughout the years who have found this place. You can too. At the risk of sounding too cliche, you just have to really want it and believe.

As we move into fall I hope some of you will get inspired to tackle the issue of weight and health. The meetings continue and I look forward to seeing some of your smiling faces return. My rates are changing so get into the meetings soon!!

And...there is a new option if you are interested in my program but cannot make meetings:
ONLINE MEETINGS!
Yes I am taking an alternate path! Along with the in person meetings I currently offer, I am starting up a whole new way of presenting my program! These meetings will be inexpensive ($7 for a single meeting: 10 meetings for $50!) and available for you to join at specific times, or you can simply download the audio and listen to the meeting at your leisure for $3.

What will an on-line meeting give me?
The idea of this format is to allow everyone who does not have time for regular meetings to have a resource for support, ideas and a program which will help you lose and do it in the healthiest way possible.

You will come online with other members of group as audio participants. I will have my webcam on so you can see me, and see my computer screen. I will present the topic and show the visual of the materials and the group can share and discuss the topic.  The materials will be emailed to you so you can print them or look at them on your computer. You will be on audio only so will be anonymous if desired (you sign in with a screen name). You can be in your pajamas and no one will know! And I plan on holding these meetings early in the morning and later in the evening so you can catch them before or after your workday.

More to come in a separate email announcement, but I would love to hear feedback from you as to whether this would appeal to you. And I will be sending all of you an invitation to join an on-line meeting for free this week, just to see if it is a viable option for you.

SAN FRANCISCO THEN/NOW
Jim always sends me the coolest images! These are done by an SF photographer, Shawn Clover, who took photos of the SF 1906 Earthquake and superimposed a current image of the same location. Definitely unique!

FINDING MOTIVATION!
Motivation can come from all directions. Because I am very much a visual person (can you tell by all the images I put in the newsletter?) I often use movies to find information and inspiration. I watch all of them with a skeptic's mindset, I will confess, as I know that they are designed to entertain, and are not necessarily 100 % factual in some cases. But I think there is enough in each of these to get your motivational juices flowing...

THE SECRET
This is an old movie, as well as a book. The basic message here is that the power of intent is stronger than we can possibly imagine. This film is hokey and cosmic, but the information is transformational. And I know many of you will have seen this. If your motivation is at a low point you might watch it again.

FAT, SICK & NEARLY DEAD
Okay, so this movie is about an Australian man who goes on a radical juice fast. Normally I would not consider watching a film like this, let alone doing such a thing. However it was recommended to me by members and I LOVED it! He travels around the US with his juicer, telling folks what he is doing and the reactions are priceless. He is quite inspirational, even if you do not intend to follow in his path.

FORKS OVER KNIVES
Another film, which if I had been told about it in the wrong way I would be unlikely to see. It is about several ill people who become vegan and wipe out their illnesses. All very well done, informative and a truly enjoyable film: even if the idea of becoming vegan is the furthest thing from your mind.

CHOW DOWN
Another film which touts the miracle of diet change to good health. On the one hand, this film seemed more honest and believable than some others, but it was not as entertaining: It is a hard balance. However, if the doctor has you on meds you do not like and he (she) keeps saying you should eat healthier, watch this.

FAST FOOD NATION
This film was not what I expected. It is a fiction movie starring Greg Kinnear as an executive in a big fast food company who uncovers an ugly secret. There is also the young girl who works behind the counter and the illegal immigrants' stories who work in the processing plant, so you get it from all angles. Excellent film. It is ideal to show your kids or teenagers as it is not a documentary and is very entertaining. But it sure is eye-opening...

food incFOOD, INC.
This film is the ultimate slam dunk to the fast food industry. If you are at all challenged to get off the burgers, mass produced foods, etc. this film will knock you upside the head with a dose of reality. Not for the faint of heart, but I know tons of you reading this have been avoiding seeing it. Take the leap...

FACEBOOK POSTINGS...
I get such great things posted on my Facebook newsfeed, and though some of you are friends and see what I repost, many are not. Here are classics from the last two weeks...

FOX NEWS AND MONSANTO
Another Facebook post was this interesting video done by two former Fox News employees. I try to stay clear of politics, so take what you will from this. I don't think it is any news that Fox withholds information (any news organization does, I suspect). I guess I was surprised these writers thought that Fox would report on this.
