  Newsletter #111
Join Our Mailing List

Hi Everyone,

I decided since my major focus these days is my new business and meetings that I would make this newsletter a Healthy & Happy newsletter, rather than my old coaching moniker, Healthy Thoughts/Healthy Actions. That name and website will soon be a thing of the past, as I move fully into my new company. Hence not only am I changing the name, but creating a consistent look with my website. I hope these newsletters will become easier to read and a little more stylish.

This issue I want to write about habits. Yesterday I listened to a radio interview with an author named Charles Duhigg, who wrote a book called The Power of Habits. The things he said were so interesting that I just ordered it, and will write more about it below.

He explained that a habit has two parts: the trigger and the reward. So as we do something over and over again we are stimulated by something which begins the act, because there is a reward at the other end.

He used an example of his habit of getting up from his desk at about 3:30 each day to go upstairs to the cafeteria to get a chocolate chip cookie. He decided he needed to lose some weight and wanted to break this habit.  So he had to first identify the trigger, which seemed to be this need for a 3:30 break. But the uncovering the reward was actually more elusive. So we're all thinking its the cookie, right? I mean what better reward could there be? Well he experimented with getting a candy bar one day, an apple another day and a glass of water another day. It did not seem to matter. They all satisfied his needs somehow. So it was not the cookie.

But every time he would go up to get his cookie his colleagues were up there and they all stood around and chatted for awhile. He began to realize that the reward was the social interaction! So he decided to arrange for social time in some other way and broke this daily habit.

Now how does this apply to you? Well I am betting all of us have habits we'd love to break. And you're probably saying to yourself as you're reading this, "well for me the reward would be the cookie...", right? But what if it wasn't? What if the reward was to re-energize because you were tired, or because you were bored and needed stimulation or...? Fill in the blank...You may not even be aware of what the reward is that you are seeking.

So the next time you find yourself doing the same unwanted behavior over and over identify the trigger and then the REAL reward. Go deep inside to figure out what you really want! And I will bet there is a much better way of getting that than stuffing cookies in your mouth.

This week I introduced a new component into the program which takes my meetings beyond a source of motivation and education. Now I have an actual weight loss formula which is very simple, logical, and it will get you out if the processed food addictions once and for all. And lest you fear I will be telling you that you can no longer indulge in treat foods, this is not the case. Come find out a way you can lose weight, and do it in a way which will change the way you eat for life!

           BOOK RECOMMENDATION
THE POWER OF HABIT: WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO IN LIFE AND IN BUSINESS
by Charles Duhig
g

As I mentioned in my opening piece, the interview really got me intrigued by this book. Not only did he talk about understanding and controlling our habits he also discussed our shopping and lifestyle habits, which the major retailers know all about. He had some shocking information. I can't wait to read it!

FOOD RECOMMENDATION
SUMO MANDARIN ORANGES

I was strolling through Whole Foods last week and came across these monster mandarin oranges. They are about the size of a regular orange, so huge in the world of mandarins: no wonder they have named them Sumo Mandarins. But they peel like a mandarin, are seedless and best of all, are about the sweetest, most lovely fruit I have had in ages! I have only seen them at WF so hope if you look for them you can find them. They are worth the search!

I have a large product recommendation list on my website. Check it out:

  MOVIE RECOMMENDATION:
FAT, SICK AND NEARLY DEAD

Thank you to Angela from Santa Rosa for telling me about this great film!

This movie, which is available on DVD, is a wonderful documentary on one Australian man's journey from very sick to completely fit. He does a juice fast...for 60 days! But he does it in such a unique way, and filmed the whole experience, including fantastic comments from folks all over the US, where he travels while doing this. People share their attitudes on what he's doing and their relationship to food: some of which is hilarious, and some quite motivational. In fact he gets a few to join him, including one man as bad off as he is, who has the same results. I would never ever have considered a juice fast before seeing this, and know I would never do it as long as he did, but this movie gets you thinking...it really does...

DIET SODAS AND HEART DISEASE

Jim from Sonoma has filled my inbox with a multitude of items this month. Here is an article which indicates that diet sodas have an adverse effect on our hearts.

TEAM IN TRAINING FOR THE HUMAN RACE!

HUMAN RACE 2011

Last year a whole gang of us did the Human Race together. I thought it might be a great idea to train for it. Every Thursday between now and the race at 11 am I will be at the trailhead at Howarth Park and walk the 3.8 mile loop around the lake. This first week several joined me, and will continue. By mid-May when the race happens, we are going to be in great shape! How about you? If you walked with us last year you know how much fun it was, and if you didn't well here's a chance to get in gear for it. You do not need to coming to my meetings to join this. Come walk with us!
