Hi Everyone!
The new program began last week, and so far so good. The meetings are mostly fairly small, but full of wonderful, enthusiastic and motivated people who are connecting with one another and building rapport. There seems to be a lot of curiosity and interest in the materials I am presenting, desire for connection and humor. Since many recognize each other from previous meetings there often is a comfort level built in.
The movement part seemed challenging for some, so I have decided to hold off on bringing outside instructors in for the time being, and focusing in on what each group needs in order to feel they are getting something out of this part of the meeting. But overall these meetings are evolving into what I imagined they should be.
I am relieved, but also so anxious. As with any new business it will likely be months, possibly years until I actually make money and feel even vaguely on solid ground. Meanwhile I hope to develop this concept further and build a really rockin' program which will draw many more of you to come check it out.
This business of starting a new enterprise is scary at best. Those of you who have never taken the leap to begin a business, well, I have no idea if I would recommend it, but I have had quite a few and here I am starting another! In fact the picture above was me in 1981...In my flower shop in Pt Reyes Station (and 80 lbs heavier). That was my very first business: so many lessons learned since then!
Somehow I guess I am not destined to be an employee, as it seems I last only so long before my independent nature seeps out. And seep it does...But I guess that's why many of you found my meetings appealing. My need to operate from my heart and my gut just snuck out and said things others might not say.
So this program is all about the freedom to say exactly what I think is in your best interest to hear: information that might help you on the path to getting truly healthy. And to me the biggest gift is being able to see this dream come to fruition. So thank you to all of you who have taken that brave step to try something new. And thank you to all of you reading this who are considering doing the same. I hope you'll take the leap...what have you got to lose?

As recounted above, the meetings are in full swing, so come on down! Learn all about how to eat in a truly healthy way, start looking at your emotional connection with food, and get a little exercise as a bonus. It all adds up to a fun, fast, full hour.
AND...I HAVE A MEETING BEGINNING IN SEBASTOPOL!!! Fridays 9:30am beginning February 10th Sebastopol Center for the Arts 6780 Depot St Hope to see you!
MEETINGS WEEK 2, 3 & 4
Some of you will be in week 2 this coming week, and some in week 3, due to beginning meetings over a 2 week span (does that sentence make a lick of sense???) In any case here is what I will be covering.
Week 2 I will be talking about food addictions. We will talk about the food industry and understanding the nature of what they have manifested, and also talk about how to get out of the addictive cycle.
Weeks 3 & 4 we will begin parsing out nutritional labels. One meeting will look at confusing ingredients and making sense of them, and one will focus on making healthier choices.
If you will be attending for the first time be prepared to stay 15 minutes longer to have an orientation to understand the full program.
Activity will vary from area to area and meeting to meeting. Right now I will mostly be leading the activity portion until I pull together a roster of instructors, and as indicated above, taking it very slowly. Some weeks we may just walk together for 20 minutes around the neighborhood to get blood flowing. And some weeks we will work out gently as folks build up strength. Those in Petaluma and Sonoma and Sebastopol should keep a mat or thick towel in their car (Santa Rosa has mats at the facility), and everyone wear sneakers or comfy workout shoes and comfy clothes.
Here's something else for all of you who think you'd like to come but have hesitations. Some of us do not want to be physical: we are either not in shape enough, already are doing plenty of activity, or simply just want the information and nothing more. It is absolutely fine to leave before the activity part of the meeting. No one should feel obligated to do it all. However, that said, I do challenge those of you who know you should confront these things to push past the hesitations, but I will never stop you or make you feel wrong for making this choice.
So there ya go...Would love to see you all at one of these...

RECIPES FOR THIS ISSUE
I recently decided to buy a lean ground beef instead of ground turkey, and then had to find a good recipe. Something made me think of Shepard's Pie, and this one came out so wonderfully delicious my boyfriend ate 3 servings. Seriously, he just brought the whole casserole dish to the table and finished it off.
So I bought some more and decided I'd do a different recipe and experimented with Tamale Pie, keeping the pie concept going. A little more complicated than the Shepard's but pretty darn delish.

SHEPARD'S PIE
Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 lbs ground round beef
- 1 onion chopped
- 1-2 cups vegetables - chopped carrots, corn, peas
- 1 1/2 - 2 lbs potatoes (3 big ones)
- 1 Tablespoon butter
- 1/4 cup almond milk or low fat / nonfat milk
- 1/2 cup beef broth
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/8 cup flour
- Salt, pepper, other seasonings of choice
1 Peel and quarter potatoes, boil in salted water until tender (about 20 minutes).
2 While the potatoes are cooking, melt spray oil in a large non stick frying pan.
3 Sauté onions in pan until tender over medium heat (10 mins). If you are adding vegetables, add them according to cooking time. Put any carrots in with the onions. Add corn or peas either at the end of the cooking of the onions, or after the meat has initially cooked.
4 Add ground beef and sauté until no longer pink. Add salt and pepper. Add Worcestershire sauce. Add 1/4 cup of the beef broth and cook, uncovered, over low heat for 10 minutes.
5. Mix the rest of the broth with the flour in a small bowl to get the lumps out and add to the pan to thicken into a gravy.
5 Mash potatoes in bowl with the butter and milk and season to taste.
6 Place beef and onions in baking dish. Distribute mashed potatoes on top. Rough up with a fork so that there are peaks that will brown nicely. You can use the fork to make some designs in the potatoes as well.
7 Cook in 400 degree oven until bubbling and brown (about 30 minutes). Broil for last few minutes if necessary to brown.

TAMALE PIE
INGREDIENTS:
The cornbread:
1 cup white flour
1 cup cornmeal
¼ cup xylitol, sugar or sweetener of choice
1 tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
½ cup plain non fat yogurt
½ cup unsweetened applesauce (you can use 1 cup of either yogurt or applesauce)
2 eggs, beaten or 1/2 cup egg substitute
The pie:
spray oil
1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
1 onion, chopped
1 green bell pepper, seeds and stem removed, chopped
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons chile powder (more or less to taste)
2 teaspoons cumin (more or less to taste)
1 (14 1/2 ounce) can fire-roasted tomatoes
1 (4-ounce) can green Anaheim chiles, drained, chopped
1 (16 ounce) can whole kernel corn, drained
1 (4 ounce) can sliced ripe olives
1 Preheat oven to 375°F.
2. For cornbread mix dry ingredients in a large bowl. Combine wet ingredients in small bowl and mix well. Combine together and set aside.
3 Heat olive oil in a large skillet on medium high. Add the ground beef, onion, and bell pepper. Add salt, chile powder, and cumin. Cook, stirring infrequently, until the ground beef has browned on all sides. Remove from heat. Drain excess fat if necessary (if you are using lean beef, there shouldn't be excess).
4 Mix in fire-roasted tomatoes, Anaheim chiles, corn, and olives. Adjust seasoning. Add more chile powder and cumin if desired. Rub a little olive oil over the insides of a 9x12-inch casserole dish (or use a nonstick cooking spray). Spoon filling into the casserole dish.
5. Spoon cornbread mixture over the top and spread evenly.
6. Bake 40 minutes

CAT TRANSLATIONS
This was posted on Facebook last week. I laughed so hard I had tears coming down my cheeks. This is scarily familiar to my m.o. when any sort of technology goes wrong. Warning for those of you sensitive to offensive language. This has a bit. But oh is it funny!

THYROID CANCER DANGER
Generally I keep this newsletter light but this was sent to me by Ali in Santa Rosa, and I think it is important enough to pass along. Please send this on to others you think should have this information.
Dr. Oz had a show on the fastest growing cancer in women;
thyroid cancer. It was a very interesting program and he mentioned that the increase could possibly be related to the use of dental x-rays and mammograms. He demonstrated that on the apron the dentist puts on you for your dental x-rays there is a little flap that can be lifted up and wrapped around your neck. Many dentists don't bother to use it. Also, there is something called a "thyroid guard" for use during mammograms. By coincidence, I had my yearly mammogram yesterday. I felt a little silly, but I asked about the guard and sure enough, the technician had one in a drawer. I asked why it wasn't routinely used. Answer: "I don't know. You have to ask for it." Well, if I hadn't seen the show, how would I have known to ask?
