Finding Jesus At A Drag Show
Jay Bakker, son of Jim Bakker and Tammy Faye Messner, writes:
"What are the boundaries you put on grace? Are there places you won't go or people you won't socialize with for fear of judgment? Ask yourself: What are the rules I make up about who gets to sit at Christ's table? Then ask yourself: Are my rules consistent with grace?" Read more here.

New guidelines for vocations
During the period of Advent 2009 to Advent 2010 the Commission on Ministry of the Diocese of California undertook an examination of the diocesan discernment/vocations process. The goal was to identify and address problematic and/or confusing aspects of the process and its associated documents. The result of that work is a new set of guidelines and process documents that are clear and firmly in line with both the canons of the Episcopal Church national and the diocesan canons.

Diginity honors Vince Jang with Pax et Bonum Service Award
Every year the SF Dignity Chapter has a dinner-dance event called the Pax et Bonum Service Awards Dinner (Peace and Goodness) for the chapter and community and they honor folks who have been of service to the chapter, to the Church community and to the greater LGBT community.
The event this year will be on February 19th and Deacon Vince Jang is one of those being honored for his service to the SF Chapter. The other honorees include Nicole Sotelo from Call to Action and Lt. Dan Choi for his activism for the repeal of DADT - and they're both coming to the party, too!
We're hoping for a big, supportive crowd for all the recipients and so I wanted to make sure that word got out to the community. If you would to attend, you can contact the office or make your reservation online here. |

Brueggemann see Bible as constantly capable of yielding 'new kind of reality'
 | | Walter Brueggemann |
[Episcopal News Service] Walter Brueggemann told the opening session of the 41st Trinity Institute Jan. 20 that 21st century Christians need to stop being mired in old quarrels over scriptural interpretation and instead approach the Bible as "an intricate set of symbols and signs and signals that are arranged in a certain imaginative, artistic configuration that yield a new kind of reality."
Brueggemann, an Old Testament scholar and professor emeritus at Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, Georgia, said that such an approach can help Christians engage with the Bible in a way that avoids pre-packaged interpretation. Instead, he said, Christians and the churches to which they belong need to engage with the Bible in a way that gives them a place to stand in their lives and their faith in the midst of "the power of nation states, the reductionisms of scientism and in the capricious power of the marketplace." The 41st Trinity Institute, sponsored by Trinity Wall Street and titled "Reading Scripture Through Other Eyes," is meant to help participants "become more conscious of what we are looking for when we return to the Bible as a source of inspiration," according to the conference's web pages. - Illinois Pastors and Politicians Paint King as Homophobe: To properly remember King, according to David E. Smith, executive director of Illinois Family Institute, who attended the luncheon, people must remember that "Martin Luther King was first a minister of God." As a minister, King wouldn't have supported immorality, he asserted. Their assertion, of course, flies in the face of a lot of history-but when has the religious right let the facts get in the way of a good anti-gay rant?
- Every January, radical TV preacher Pat Robertson tells his followers what to expect over the next calendar year, after claiming to receive divine messages from above. In 2011, Robertson said things will go poorly for the United States -- but well for Pat Robertson.

- The Roman Catholic Church's scandal involving the widespread sexual abuse of children continues to get worse: "A newly disclosed document reveals that Vatican officials told the bishops of Ireland in 1997 that they had serious reservations about the bishops' policy of mandatory reporting of priests suspected of child abuse to the police or civil authorities. The document appears to contradict Vatican claims that church leaders in Rome never sought to control the actions of local bishops in abuse cases, and that the Roman Catholic Church did not impede criminal investigations of child abuse suspects."
