Healing of Memories Introduced to Bay Area

Our new Diocesan Multicultural Roundtable met last week with Bishop Marc, Madoda Gcwadi, and  Rev. Michael Lapsley, SSM, to review the launch of Healing in the Diocesan Family. Oasis California is a founding member of the roundtable.

The healing effort began as Fr. Lapsley and his associate Madoda traveled around our Diocese to offer an introduction to their work with the Institute for Healing of Memories. Their work here entailed talking at the Church of the Epiphany, San Carlos; preaching at St. Aidans Church in San Francisco, speaking at Sacred Cocktails and  presenting at the two Our Saviour parishes in the diocese, Oakland and Mill Valley. After these sessions were completed, Bishop Marc and Fr. Lapsley sat down with representatives from the diocesan multicultural commissions.
People came to hear Fr. Lapsely for many different reasons. Some came because they knew of his reputation; others came to work on some level of forgiveness and reconciliation in their personal lives. Still others came because of their interest in the work of the Institute for Healing of Memories in South Africa, or because they looked forward to how this work might benefit the Diocese of California.

While visiting with Bishop Marc Andrus, Fr. Lapsley recorded a video interview that he has posted on his blog. Fr. Lapsley will return to continue his work with the diocese in 2011.

On the weekend of  November 5th and 6th, 2010,  a group of more than 70 faith leaders gathered together at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, CA.

See their It Gets Better Video here.

What was special about this group was that these faith leaders were all transgendered, or friends and advocates for the transgender community. It was a very special event and a lot was shared about faith, hope and how our faith communities could be more accepting of transgendered individuals. The event was called, "Transgender Religious Leaders Summit 2010." The speakers and panelists came from a variety of faith traditions. All spoke about the progress they have made, and are helping to make. It was inspiring to see so many connect and plan for the future. If you are a teenager or young person who is looking for hope, we recorded this video message for you! Most of us have been where you are now, but we got through it and so can you! Those you see in this video are standing up for you and with you to say we know it will get better. Your life can be full of meaning and purpose!
