What's New at Titans Gym: We Are Expanding - Downtown!
Titans Gym has been offered the opportunity to expand into
one of Northeast Ohio's most dynamic markets: downtown Cleveland. The K&D
Group, developers of the Residences at Six Six Eight Euclid Avenue, have offered
us the opportunity to open our second location and become part of the
revitalization of Downtown Cleveland. (To see the announcement from the July
24, 2009 issue of the Plain Dealer, click here.)
Opening is slated for the beginning of 2010 - the exact date has not been set.
We are still focused on Mentor. This project in no
way, shape, or form will have any negative impact on our Mentor facility. Our
Mentor location is Geoff's pride and joy and the vision of many years of hard work,
and we will continue to make improvements here as we finish 2009 and work our
way into 2010.
Over the course of the next six to eight months, we plan to
expand our aerobics room, redo the floor, and - many of you will be pleased to
hear this - repaint the walls. Before 2009 is out, we also plan to add some new
Precor AMTs and a new cable crossover with two low rows and two pulldown units.
We're also working on a package deal to purchase new lockers for the men's
and ladies' locker rooms at both locations.
Our goal is still, as it has always been, to provide the best
facility that your money can buy. You can believe in your investment in Titans
Gym!
None of our core management will be affected: Kim will be
working on her ninth year here in Mentor by the time Cleveland opens.
We realize that many of our members work downtown, and those who
don't might like a change of pace, so your current memberships in Mentor will
be honored at the downtown location for a select number of days per month or
year.
Watch the newsletter for more information as we work out the
details.

Tip of the Month: Exercising with a Health Challenge,
Part IIIf you're facing a health challenge - cardiovascular issues,
breathing problems, bone or joint conditions, neuromuscular conditions, hearing
impairment, pregnancy, psychological disorders, or mental handicaps - you can
still enjoy the benefits of exercise. In fact, physical activity can help
increase your energy, strength, balance, and coordination, not to mention
easing your pain. But you need to find the best form of exercise and learn
proper guidelines.
The July-August TitanUp Times discussed the need to
work with your healthcare practitioner before starting an exercise program.
to read the July-August TitanUp Times.) This month, we'll discuss ways
to communicate with your fitness professional about your health challenges, and
why it's important to do so.
Certified Fitness Professionals Make a Difference
You'll gain the most benefit from working with a certified
fitness professional who is qualified to work with you. So, once you've found a
person you might work with, you need to ask questions: -
Does the fitness professional have experience working
with your condition?
-
Will he or she feel comfortable training you? If not,
can you be referred to someone who would be comfortable?
-
Do you feel comfortable with this person? Does he
or she provide knowledgeable answers to your questions?
-
What can you expect to achieve with an exercise
program? Be sure to discuss your goals.
Expect - and be prepared - to tell the fitness professional
about your general health, your specific illness or injury, and your history of
physical activity.
Your professional may perform evaluations such as a
range-of-motion test for a certain joint, or a cardiorespiratory test to
measure heart rate during aerobic exercise. With this information, he or she
can establish realistic goals and design a safe, effective exercise program.
(If you feel that the fitness professional is not interested in becoming
familiar with your condition, talk with another who will be.)

Niki Wins Mid-America at Indy Overall Figure, Gains Pro
Card, Qualifies for WNBF
The world is finding out that Niki DelGrosso is one serious
natural body-builder, and one serious competitor.
On August 1, Niki took first overall in Open Figure at the
2009 INBF Mid-America Pro/Am Advanced Pro-Qualifier in Evansville, Indiana.
According to the judges at this International Natural Bodybuilding &
Fitness Federation event, she's a straight "1" across the board, without a
single negative comment. (Check out the event results at the INBF web site.)
The win gains Niki her pro card, in her first year of
competition and less than a year after giving birth to triplets, and qualifies
her for the WNBF Pro Natural US Cup Bodybuilding & Figure Championships,
September 26 in Sacramento, California. And then, on November 14, she'll be
competing in the World Natural Bodybuilding Federation's biggest show, the
Pro-Natural Nature's Best World Championships, in New York City.
Niki is doing more than putting Titans Gym on the bodybuilding
map. As a WNBF pro athlete and a firm believer in all-natural bodybuilding, she has contracted to abide by the organization's
rigorous drug-free protocols. WNBF drug-testing rules include both urinalysis
and polygraph testing before each event, verifying that no steroids, diuretics,
growth hormones or other illegal drugs have been used in the past seven years.
Failure to submit to testing or to pass the test will result in a seven-year
suspension from membership and loss of eligibility for competition for the same
period of time.
As a further condition of membership, each athlete agrees to
limit his or her media exposure (interviews, photographs, or appearances in magazines, radio, TV, newspapers, web sites, etc.) to
only those media approved
by the WNBF, and specifically to promote therein her Pro Natural status. Niki's performance has already won her the sponsorship of
SDC Nutrition, makers of 100% natural About Time protein.
The WNBF was formed in 1989 in response to the
need for a drug-free environment in professional bodybuilding competition. The steroids,
diuretics, growth hormones, and other illegal drugs so prevalent at the time were outlawed, allowing competitors to bring to the contest only the results of
their own hard work and natural ability. (Visit the WNBF web site for more information
about the Federation.) |
Coming Next Issue: Meet the First Titans Gym Member of
the Month
Every Titans Gym member has a story, and some of them are flat-out inspiring.
In our next issue, we'll introduce you to someone who has
battled an autoimmune disease that attacked her thyroid, and later underwent
surgery to replace a heart valve. Although she returned afterward to working
out, she wasn't happy with the results - until she found the trainer
who could give her the help she needed.
Look for the story in the November-December 2009
issue of TitanUp Times, in your E-mailbox during the first week of
November.

Nutrition Notes
Tip of the Month: Never, ever skip breakfast. While
you're asleep, your body is resting, but your brain is working hard, consuming
glucose and depleting your liver's glycogen levels. Once you're up and active,
you need fuel - until you take in some healthy carbs and low-fat protein,
you're just a muscle-burning machine. Eat your breakfast! Protect your
fitness-training investment!

Healthy Eating: Trans Fat
Trans fat is both very unhealthy and very common. It
increases the amount of LDL ("bad") cholesterol and triglycerides, increases
the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL ("good") cholesterol, and disrupts the
functioning of cells that line the blood vessels. And it's found in many foods,
especially fried foods, cookies, crackers, and commercial baked goods.
The July-August TitanUp Times discussed the ways to
avoid trans fat at home - read labels and stay away from anything containing partially hydrogenated vegetable oils. (Click here to read the July-August TitanUp Times.)
Eating out is a little more challenging - few restaurants put nutrition information on the menu. But if you know what to look for and
how to order, you can keep your restaurant meals heart-healthy.
Part II: Trans Fat When You're Eating Out
We have seven simple rules to help you avoid trans
fat when you're eating out:
-
the No-Frying rule
-
the Salad rule
-
the Dessert rule
-
the Homework rule
-
the Beverage rule
-
the Question rule
-
the Last rule.

table with a clear conscience, click here.

This Month at TG Tanning ...
Tip of the Month: You know you need Vitamin D to protect your bones. But
Northeast Ohio's climate doesn't give us enough sunlight to provide all we
need.
Did you know that a good source for the Sunshine Vitamin is
the UVB rays you absorb during a tanning session? One tanning session produces
between 10,000 and 20,000 IU of Vitamin D. So you end up with healthy bones to
complement that golden glow.
Promotion of the Month (good through October 31,
2009): If you're a gym member and you purchase a yearly EFT tanning contract
(sign up for a year's contract and have the charge paid monthly through your
credit card or withdrawn from your checking account), you'll receive a free
sample of Sex Magnet tanning lotion and a coupon worth 25% off a future tanning
lotion purchase.
Save green while you work on your tan. If you tan
daily and purchase a 1-year EFT tanning package (check out our rates at the
Titans Gym web site
- click on TG Tanning and then on Level I, II, or III to view the monthly
rates), each session will cost you just $.30, $.63, or $.88, depending on the
tanning level you choose.
So as summer winds down and the sunshine goes away, why not
take a few minutes for yourself, unwind, and get some Vitamin D in the process?

Ask the Professional
Q. For Niki: How do
you get so lean?
A. Heavy
lifting!Heavy lifting, six days a week, is what keeps me lean. Forget the high-reps, low-weight.
Combine the lifting with 1 gram protein and 0.5 g. carb per pound of body weight. And
for supplements, I use arginine, creataine, glutamine, and whey and soy
proteins.
