Expect Your Scouts to Wear Uniform with Pride! The Uniform Reminds Members of Their Commitment to Scouting Principles
A leader responded to the spring Voice of the Scout survey with this statement: "Too many Scouts (and even some leaders) don't tuck in their uniform shirts and wear sloppy or incomplete uniforms! We need to teach Scouts to take pride in their uniforms and their appearance." I agree. We should set a great example with our uniforms and teach Scouts to dress neatly and properly. We need to teach them how to dress and groom appropriately, set high standards, and expect them to adhere to those standards. The best way to get Scouts to meet those expectations is for the older Scouts in your group (not the adults) to conduct uniform inspections and to hold Scouts accountable. The 1927 edition of the Scouting Handbook for Boys states, "Putting on the uniform does not make a fellow a Scout, but putting on the uniform is a sign to the world that one has taken the Scout obligations and folk expect Scout-like acts from one wearing it." While the language is a bit dated, the point is right on! The uniform creates a sense of belonging, brings people of different backgrounds together in the Scouting tradition, helps build good unit spirit, and reminds members of their commitment to the ideals of the Scouting program: A commitment to do their duty to God, to their country, to other people and to themselves. Promote the wearing of the correct uniform-it identifies our membership as a force for good in our communities. Tim McCandless Scout Executive/CEO Inland Northwest Council

Voice of the Scout is coming your way soon! Voice of the Scout (VOS) is the BSA's first nation - wide effort to directly engage leaders, Scouts and parents. VOS is a system of continuous surveys and reports that will capture the value our members, parents and volunteers are associating with Scouting. Through these experiences we can understand what is driving word- of-mouth referrals to Scouting and loyalty to our program. Your response to our surveys, which are sent out twice a year, will help to identify what we can do better as an organization.
Do you want the kids of the Inland Northwest Council to have a great Scouting experience? Enter your current email address here so you can make your voice heard!
