Paving work on I-110 and at Davis Hwy/Fairfield Drive intersection
Paving crews are placing the final layer of structural asphalt on I-110 north and southbound between Maxwell Street and Airport Boulevard. Once the work is complete, the paving team will apply the final or "friction" layer of asphalt to the roadway The work is part of a $57 million construction initiative to widen I-110 to six lanes between the Airport Blvd overpass and Maxwell Street. Improving traffic flow and relieving congestion are major goals for the project.
Nighttime paving work is underway on I-110.
Paving work is also underway on Davis Highway and Fairfield Drive near Interstate 110. Both roads have been widened and new acceleration and deceleration lanes added in conjunction with the interstate work. "We're working at night as much as possible," said Frank Tucker, the project administrator from Volkert Construction Services. "Temperatures sometimes make it difficult to pave at night, but we're doing our best to limit lane closures to overnight hours and reduce traffic impacts during construction." Work on the project began in 2004 and is slated for completion in the early spring. |
Split diamond interchange update
The focus for the Interstate 110/Airport Boulevard-Brent Lane split diamond interchange will soon transition to Airport Boulevard. Workers will first remove the existing concrete, curb and asphalt before widening the roadway to four lanes on either side of the interstate. Once this work is complete, the new I-110 on-and-off ramps to Airport Boulevard will be opened. Archer-Western Contractors, Ltd. is also completing work on the Airport Blvd overpass across I-110. Over the next month, crews will be constructing a traffic separator, painting the overpass and performing final construction zone clean up.
Fencing is being installed on the outside pedestrian rail of the Airport Boulevard overpass.
The new I-110 southbound service road is slated to open early next year. The new service road, located on the west side of the interstate, will make it possible to exit I-110 southbound at Airport Boulevard and travel on to Brent Lane if desired.
Construction continues on the new service roads for the I-110/Airport Boulevard-Brent Lane split diamond interchange project.
"This will be a major change for I-110 southbound drivers headed to Brent Lane," said Mike Lenga, the project administrator from Greenhorne & O'Mara. "Traffic will exit much sooner (at the new Airport Boulevard exit) and then use the new service road to connect to Brent Lane." On the subject of Brent Lane, the construction team is working on the fifth and final phase of work to widen the roadway to six lanes between Rawson Lane and Davis Highway. The work is needed to accommodate the interchange improvements.
Work on Brent Lane has entered the fifth and final phase. Traffic is in the final configuration and work is underway to build the median and center portion of the roadway.
The final phase of work includes shifting traffic to the newly constructed travel lanes and building the median and center portion of the roadway. Archer Western Contractors, Ltd. began work on the Interstate 110/Airport Boulevard-Brent Lane split diamond interchange project in February 2007 and completion is scheduled for the spring of 2009.
