A Message from Rabbi Krauss
 new bini photo
Dear Parents,

It is a week of celebration: celebration of Yom Yerushalayim and celebration of Talmud Torah on Friday at our MiDor L'Dor Siyum HaTorah. Over 500 children signed up to learn b'chevruta with their parents, grandparents, peers, and teachers. Learning Torah across the generations is a very appropriate way to enter Shavuot and to understand what Shavuot is all about. Thank you to Samson Fine for setting up the MiDor L'Dor website and to all members of our greater community who participated.

Please remember that Sunday, May 23rd is the Salute to Israel Parade, and it is a critical time for us to show our support for Medinat Yisrael.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Binyamin Krauss

yom yerushalayim

"Forty-three years ago today, for the first time in many generations, we were allowed to go all the way" into Yerushalayim. Rabbi Krauss began Wednesday morning. "We thank Hashem for all the wonderful things Yerushalayim is. It doesn't matter where we live because we know we always have a home. By celebrating today, we show Hashem that we get it-that we appreciate what we have."

In honor of Yom Yerushalayim, grades 1-8 gathered on the steps for Hallel B'Tzibur led by Chazan Shim Craimer. After much singing, there was quiet in the building, as all turned their attention to the library where fifth graders performed a daglanut. They created a Magen David, the number 43, then spun and waved their Israeli flags. Without further ado, the chagiga began, singing and dancing on the steps and in the areas, celebrating the re-unification of Yerushalayim forty-three years ago. The middle school students listened to Officer Peterman back in their areas tell his story of fighting in the Israeli Army against Egypt during the Six Day Way when Yerushalayim was reunified. First, second and third graders enjoyed Yerushalayim workshops in class, while fifth graders talked about Yerushalayim through SMART Board presentations. The first graders painted their own semel of Yerushalayim. The third grade workshops were titled "Old City," "New City," "Capital City," and "Holy City" where they talked about the significance of Yerushalayim in each capacity. The second graders built their own Yerushalayim by painting a mural, building Midgal David, Yemin Moshe, people, and buildings of the city. They created their own model of the Kotel and wrote notes on Aish HaTorah's website to put into the Kotel in Yerushalayim.

                     *Chidon HaTanach*

chidonOver one hundred middle and high school students from across the United States participated in the National Bible Contest held in New York City on Sunday, May 9, in an annual contest sponsored by the Jewish Agency. Among the four winners from Sunday's contest is our eighth grader Yishai Chamudot who will compete with winners from Israel and around the world in the International Bible Contest held in Jerusalem on
Independence Day, in what has become an integral part of the national celebration.

This year's national contest drew 108 students, grades 6 though 11, from 40 Jewish Day and Hebrew schools. Participants were tested on Genesis, Samuel I, and sections of Ezekiel and Psalms. The event, which took place at the Ramaz Middle School in Manhattan, was attended by Israel's Deputy Consul in New York, Benjamin Krasna, and National Director of the Friends of the IDF, General (res.) Yitzhak Gershon, and included a videotaped greeting from Israel's Minister of Education Gideon Saar.

Sample questions from the contest are posted on the Jewish Agency Twitter page

                     *Research Projects*

 ocean research ocean research1

In Class 1X students have been enjoying the information-filled ocean reports the students brought in last week. Each child met with and worked cooperatively with a partner to teach a classmate about the ocean animal he or she had researched. Each child then wrote three new facts learned from their partner. It was wonderful watching the children teaching another child the material he or she had mastered.

Sixth graders too have been researching. They have been writing research papers on Rome, the civilization they are presently studying. The students are independently considering one element
of civilization in which they are interested. Some of their topics included: school, family life, army equipment, Julius Ceasar, or the second Punic War.

Students primarily worked on this in class. They learned to narrow down their topic, formulate questions to answer in the research, record information on notecards. They also learned to make an outline, write a first draft, organize a bibliography, and proof-read, proof-read, proof-read. "The students feel a great sense of accomplishment," said Morah Pearl Taback, "at having completed such a 'grown-up task'."

     first grade Hebrew challah letters

First grade celebrated something very delicious. They completed learning the Alef-Bet Hebrew letters in script! So as a tasty celebration they used challah dough to shape Hebrew letters. These most delicious challot were made on Erev Shabbat and were proudly shared by the first graders with their families on Shabbat.

                *Endangered Animals*

gorillas zoo
The second grade has been engaged in a unit on endangered animals. Students have been reading and discussing various factors that threaten animal survival. They investigated the Mountain Gorilla in preparation for individual research projects. This large-group study introduced key vocabulary and concepts of interdependence, diet, habitat, natural and human sources of change as well as conservation. The students then had the opportunity to choose animals from a list of endangered species provided in school and to work with partners to explore their selections in depth.

In their research, the students investigated and wrote about: habitat; diet; why the animal they were focusing on is endangered; what is being done to save them; and two or more interesting facts.

A trip to the Bronx Zoo was a wonderful experience which concretized the information studied in this unit.

According to second graders, when you visit The Congo Exhibit at the Bronx Zoo, you may wish to find out: Who is in charge of a gorilla pack?; When does a gorilla beat its chest?; What activity do gorillas do all day long? Ask a second grader to find out the answers.

Resources containing ample and child-friendly information on endangered animals can be found at: www.kidsplanet.org

                       *Flower Hour*

Alice Lebowitz plants

On Monday, May 10, 2010, Class 1W had a visit from Alice Lebowitz, mom of Alex. She spoke about the importance of flowers on Shavuot; it is the springtime and harvest in Israel, and also the day of judgment for trees. For Shavuot there is a custom of decorating our homes and shuls with flowers. Alice explained the parts of a flower: pistil, stamen, anther, ovule, carpal, sepal, petal, and stem. The children learned that three flowers in the Torah are shoshana (rose or lily), shahanat haamakim (narcissus), and chavatzelet hasharon (pancratium maritimum) and that flowers in the Torah used for spices are laurel, saffron, and wheat. The children also learned that flowers we commonly see today in Israel are: poppy, sabra, shaked/almond, roses, and iris.  Alice ended the presentation by presenting the first graders with a beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers, Wave Hill books for the classroom and the school library, Wave Hill passes for the children and their families, and honey tubes and puzzles for the children to do at home. Thank you so much, Alice, for planting these seeds of information and beautifying the first grade's Spring Unit.

            *Recipe For Hebrew Success*

Fruit Salad

Need a matkon (recipe) or some help in the mitbach (kitchen)? Well the 4Z students can do it all in Hebrew! They are putting together a class Hebrew cookbook and are practicing their Hebrew speaking as well as their culinary skills! Check out this delicious salat perot (fruit salad) they have made and eaten! Copies of their recipes are available upon request to Morah Mindy or any member of 4Z. Beteavon!

                         *Norpac Convention*

Norpac conventionOn Wednesday, May 12, the NORPAC annual mission brought over 1000 people from the tri-state area (including over 200 students) to Washington, DC. The main issues covered were the importance of the  United States' relationship with Israel and the threat of Iran's nuclear weapons program to both the U.S. and Israel. In multiple one-on-one meetings with congressman and senators, Jeremy Berger (6Y) presented the importance of continued U.S. foreign Aid to Israel. Below is Jeremy meeting with Senator John Thune (Rep-S.D.) in his private office on Capitol Hill. Nearly all of our senators and representatives were met with individually by NORPAC groups.

choirOn the evening of Monday May 10, 2010, the SAR Academy Choir had the pleasure of singing at the Yavneh Academy for the first annual choir exchange concert. The event is the first of its kind for the Academy, and it was all started through a conversation between Morah Naomi and the Music Director at Yavneh, Mrs. Marsha Greenberg Motzen. Each choir sang songs by themselves, Yavneh provided a few instrumental soloists, and at the end the choirs combined to sing three pieces, ending with Yad B'Yad, Hand in Hand. Each choir rehearsed the three group songs on their own, and then rehearsed for twenty minutes together before performing. Parents were in tears as the choirs sang together. Although the schools compete in sporting events, having the choirs sing for and with each other helped to promote the arts and unity for the schools, and will hopefully be an inspirational event for Jewish Day Schools.

                               *Seventh Grade To Boston*

On Wednesday, May 12th, the seventh grade pulled out of SAR Academy early in the morning after shacharit and breakfast. During their two-day trip they visited the JFK Presidential Library & Museum which portrays the life, leadership, and legacy of President Kennedy, conveys his enthusiasm for politics and public service, and illustrates the nature of the office of the President. They toured the Salem Witch Dungeon, set in Salem Village in 1692, where students viewed the acclaimed performance of a witch trial adapted from the 1692 historical transcripts. While at the New England Pirate Museum seventh graders had the opportunity to relive the adventures of Captains Kidd and Blackbeard, who roamed freely offshore plundering merchant ships. They also strolled through a colonial seaport, boarded a pirate ship, and explored an eighty foot cave. They visited Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, walked the Freedom Trail, a 2.5 mile red-brick walking trail that leads to sixteen nationally significant historic sites that tell the story of the American Revolution and beyond. They listened to the Blue Man Group; and enjoyed the Boston "Duck" Tour, where students boarded their "DUCK", an authentic World War II amphibious landing vehicle. After dinner the second night, a tired but enriched group of seventh graders returned to SAR.

דבר תורה

 דבר תורה

In the beginning of Parshat Bamidbar, for the third time, the Torah counts the Jewish nation. It says in  פרק א פסוק ב which means "שאו, את ראש כל עדת בני ישראל, למשפחותם" that they should "count the heads of  בני ישראל by their families." But the word שְׂאוּalso means "lifting heads" which suggests being proud. Why would the Torah use a word that makes us so uncertain of the meaning? Also, why were they counted according to who was in their house, which they have never done before? Rashi says that all the Jews were supposed to give in a book about their family history. The Midrash says that we had to give that type of book when we got the Torah. Why did we need this book of family history to get the Torah? Some Rabbis think that it was to show us who our ancestors were and how they took responsibility for themselves. We should do the same, because we as Jews are expected to take responsibility for our actions and not act like animals. I think that the Torah uses the word שְׂאוּbecause if we do act responsibly, then we will feel positive about ourselves and fulfill the other meaning of שְׂאוּ.
