| Setting Yourself Free
by Barbara Mencer
In last month's newsletter, Trapped, I talked about that awful situation where you feel as if you're too far down a particular road to turn back, but it's beginning to look like a dead end. What do you do?
Of course, every situation is different and the only one who can make decisions for you is you. But the thing I would stress is that while decisions such as this are seldom easy, you're better off facing them head on and settling on a direction sooner rather than later. Drift is debilitating.
Let's get a couple of things straight. While we often feel trapped, we aren't really. We always have choices.
One of those choices is to change the way we look at the less-than-ideal situation we currently find ourselves in. What's good about it? Where are the possibilities we may not have fully appreciated or explored? Things are seldom all good or all bad.
And a lot can shift when we change who we're being. For example, if someone who has had one foot out the door decides to commit fully to a partner or a career or a vision of the future, it can change everything. It's you who is the critical element in determining whether something works out or not. Sometimes that's a tough truth to swallow, but there it is. Wherever you go, you take yourself, so a new job or a new partner or a new town may not make any difference if it's the same old you that comes along.
All that said, sometimes, through no fault of your own, you find yourself mismatched and no amount of mental shifting is going to change that. Put a person who is not detail-oriented in a job that demands attention to detail and you've got problems. Put a controlling person together in a relationship with someone who won't be dominated and you create explosions. Tell a shy person who hates to sell to actively promote and market their business and don't be surprised if it doesn't happen. Ask me to do math and we're both in trouble. Square peg ... round hole. So, how can we help you decide whether you need to make a change ... in you ... or your direction?
Answer these questions as honestly as you can:
What do you need to change about you? What can you change ... attitudes, habits, etc.? And what do you have no control over ... natural abilities, personality, etc.?
What's most important to you? What was most important to you when you were younger? How has that changed? Is the life you're living ... profession you're pursuing ... relationship you're in ... goals you're trying to achieve ... in alignment with whatever is most important to you?
What do you love doing? How big is the gap between what you love doing and what you're currently doing? Have you downplayed the importance of enjoyment in the choices you've made? What is it costing you emotionally to stay in your current situation?
How do you see things working out if you continue down your present path? What could you do to change this trajectory?
What are your options? Brainstorm what you would like to do or like to have without thinking too much about what seems possible or how to make it happen. What inspires you? What lights you up and makes you feel good? Downplay the urge to be "realistic" when imagining a new way of life.
Start visioning alternatives. And ask those close to you whom you trust and those whose expertise and insight you value how they can help you create a new direction or make the old one work.
I know what you're thinking. "Oh sure, follow your heart. That's easy if you haven't poured 20-30 years into a relationship or a job or a ton of money into a retirement plan or business that's busted and it's all you've got and it's all you really know. Making major life changes ain't so easy."
And yet, if something isn't working, you have two choices. You can continue doing it and expect to get different results. That's Einstein's definition of insanity. Or you can make some changes.
But nothing says you have to make those changes all at once. Lay out a new course and work toward your more ideal arrangement over time. Don't stay stuck just because you can't figure out a way to change everything all at once. Create a transition plan and work it.
Feeling trapped is a miserable thing. You can set yourself free. Just intend that things will be different, envision what you want, and then work at making it happen.
Warmest regards, Barbara |
