Happy New Year!!
We hope that you, your family and your pets had a wonderful holiday and are looking forward to the new year as much as we are. We want to thank everyone who took time to make a year-end tax deductible contribution to Chicago English Bulldog Rescue.
CEBR will celebrate it's 4th Anniversary on May 27, 2011 and we are incredibly proud of the accomplishments we have made. We have successfully rehomed over 325 English Bulldogs to date and expect we will cross 400 this year due to a continued difficult economy.
We open the New Year with 25 bulldogs in foster care (7 pending adoption) and another 45 families in discussions with our counselors about possibly having to surrender their bulldogs to rescue.
We have also seen increasing increasing pressure on rescues as a result of various humane initiatives to curb or shut down puppy mills in states like Missouri. As these mills move toward state compliance, one of the more humane alternatives they can choose is rescue surrender. CEBR is the type of non-profit organization that would love to be out of business due to lack of demand but we are needed now more than ever.
So how is this a Happy New Year introduction you ask?
- We are happy that we have a passionate group of subscribers like you that have taken the time to sign up for this newsletter.
- We are happy about the incredible written and financial support you have given all of the bulldogs in our care as well as our special medical cases.
- We are happy that we have a network of just short of 11,000 friends, adopters, volunteers and corporate sponsors that have demonstated incredible support of our mission to bring the best medical care and rehoming services to these beautiful bulldogs.
We are excited to continue the services we offer in 2011 and look forward to the many challenges we will face. Please enjoy this issue and we hope you will continue to follow our group and our bulldogs throughout this new year. If you have some room in your heart and your home, you might want to think about rescuing a bully as your New Year's Resolution!

Cranberry Update
This beautiful, spunky girl arrived in Chicago on December 5th and her story was profiled in the December 2010 Edition of The BULLetin. Her's was the most widely read article in that edition and we know our readers have fallen in love with her as much as we have.
Cranberry heads back to Iowa State University this Thursday January 13th to be ready for a surgery on Friday that we are optimistic will enable her to walk on her front legs for the first time.

How About a Shot of Tequila!
| | Pure Gold, no salt or lime! |
This 6 year old beauty was dumped off at a shelter when her owners decided she was too old to breed after having 3 litters. Now she's enjoying here retirment from breeding and is no early riser. In fact, she loves to sleep in her crate and will paw at the door to get in if it's closed. After coming into CEBR's care she was spayed and had a dental and is now in good health. She just needs daily eye drops and she does love a nice walk.
Tequila is looking for a family that will have time to cuddle with her. She's okay with laidback dogs after a suitable introduction, but she won't be pushed around by smaller dogs.
This girls is full of personally and can be a bit of a drama queen when it comes to ear and tail cleaning, but mostly she lives for belly rubs. If you are interested in making Tequila a part of your life, please submit your adoption application online at eBullymatch.com. |

Ask Our Expert Panel
Ask our panel of expert-bully-certified volunteers for their advice and lean on our years and years of experience. In each edition of the Bulletin we will respond to your questions about training, bully behavior and those nagging bully medical issue we all face. Send your questions to experts@ebullymatch.com.
Question: My bully Pickles is two years old and we seem to be constantly battling itchy skin and rash issues. I tried changing foods about 6 months ago and it didn't seem to help. Can you offer any ideas? -- Aimee J.
Answer: This is a relatively common problem in bulldogs Aimee and here are some ideas on how we would work towards a solution. There is a good chance Pickles has allergies, but you want to be certain her vet has ruled out other possible causes (i.e., demodex or staph infections by doing a scrape; an eye exam to rule out entropian for watery eyes, etc.)
If everything checks out fine, you may want to consider an allergy blood test panel. The cost for the test is in the $250-300 range, but that's a relatively small price if it helps to avoid trips to the vet for recurring problems. The report you will receive is a comprehensive list of possible food or environmental triggers and it scales your dog's sensitivity to those triggers. This report becomes an invaluable guide when selecting a different food or trying to eliminate environment allergens.
Some bulldogs may require "allergy shots" and we have had great success in using these shots to help highly allergic bulldogs build a resistance to some of the more common allergans that are unavoidable. A vial of the medicines runs about $100 and can last a couple of months depending on the vet recommended dosages. These allergy shots can be administered at home.
There are many premium quality foods on the market today that can help you avoid most protein or grain allergy triggers. Just be sure to read the ingredient labels carefully. Most of the premium food retailers have trained staff that can help you select a food that meets Pickles needs.
Good luck and we hope Miss Pickles starts to feel better soon! |
