Charitable Giving

As the year comes to a close we thought it would be a great time to remind everyone that there is still time left to make a tax deductible donation to help our bullies.

The average cost of care for each bulldog we bring in is $563 and your contributions help to offset the costs of this care.

When you make a direct donation to CEBR you are guaranteed that 100% of the amount you donate goes to providing medical care for the bullies that we take in. As a 501c3 non-profit organization your contributions to CEBR are fully tax deductible. If your employer has a corporate matching program, remember that most programs will match your donation dollar for dollar!

We know how hard you work for your money and we take your trust in us seriously. Remember, not all nonprofits are bona fide charities. As a legally registered 501c3 organization we would be happy to provide a copy of our IRS letter that certifies our nonprofit status.

Illinois requires anyone soliciting donations from the public to register with the Illinois Charities Bureau as an added safeguard against scams. You can verify if your donation is going to a registered Illinois charity group at Charity Bureau Lookup.

December 2010

Our Holiday Issue
Benny-D
Santa, I've been a very good boy this year.

Admidst the hustle and bustle of holiday planning, December is the time time of year for us to reflect on the wonderful success stories and happy endings for the bullies that came into our care in 2010 and to remember fondly those that have passed on who will always remain in our hearts.

It is with a true sense of gratitude that we wish of all our generous donors and supporters the very best that the holiday season can bring. Even through a very tough economy our supporters have remained steadfast in helping us to achieve our mission. Without you we would not have been able to help so many deserving bullies to get a second chance.

We are very proud of our work to help those most in need and we worked on close to 200 cases in 2010. We have 19 bullies currently in great foster homes that are either ready to be adopted or are in medical observation.

Dogs like Bella, Libby, Tyson, Lucky, Goose and Taffy might easily have been put down in a shelter. But thanks to our dedicated volunteers and your generosity, we have been able to make a real difference. And the beautiful irony in helping dogs with special needs is that in the end we are the recipients of the best gift of all -- the lessons we learned from these tender hearts who have taught us all so much about perseverance and courage and forgiveness and boundless love.

We look towards the New Year with the hope that someday there will no longer be a need for an organization such as ours, but until that day comes, we will be there for the bullies that need us most. With your continued support and generosity, we wish for every bully a warm and loving home in the New Year.

Forever In Our Hearts

Our beloved Goose lost his fight to recover from aspirating pneumonia on 11/13/2010.

This silly, spunky, loving, and strong willed bully was a trooper to the end. Despite a past of terrible neglect, he came to CEBR with bright eyes, a spring in his step, and a happy-go-lucky spirit. His transformation in a safe and loving foster home was nothing short of amazing.

Goose had fans around the country as they followed his journey on Facebook and online.  Dozens met him in person at CEBR events.  He could always be found out in front, working the crowd, sitting in a chair demanding attention or giving you his big, flat paw.  He loved to sit in human chairs.  Any chance he got.  We went for cocktails one evening and he bellied up to table as if to say "hey, give me a Bud!"

On behalf of Goose and CEBR, there are some very special people out there that deserve thanks for enabling us to give Goose every opportunity to make it through his final challenge. Although we were unable to save Goose, we can share in the comfort of knowing that he passed peacefully and we did all that was humanly possible. Our thanks to:

Santa Lands Early For CEBR
Cranberyy Plane 1
Click Photo For Video of Her Arrival
This month CEBR had one of the most unique arrivals that we have experienced in a long time! Meet Cranberry, a 15 week old bully pup, who arrived in Chicago after a long trip across country. She suffers from a congenital defect which has caused severe deformity to her front legs, requiring special orthopedic care.

Cranberry in Muffs

Two private pilots named Pete and Karen, from Glenview,  Illinois learned of Cranberry's story and the urgency to get her to Chicago quickly. They knew that they had to help. Our "Air Angels"  flew from Chicago's Executive Airport in their own plane to pick up our precious cargo and bring her back to her new "home" with Chicago English Bulldog Rescue.

Our Southern Belles and Their Excellent Rescue Adventure
Arkansas 3
Our CEBR road warriors Jackie Dornback and Monica Michalski started  out on a 26 hour round trip journey the day after Thanksgiving on a mission to rescue three little beauties from a puppy mill in Arkansas.

Working closely with a ground-zero Humane Investigator who has high respect for what we do, three girls now known as Tallulah, Sally Mae, and Snookie Sue made their way north to Yankee territory where they are learning about cold, snow and what it's like to be in a real home over the holidays.

Spotlight On Our Volunteers

We are so proud to spotlight two exceptional CEBR volunteers this month- Jackie Dornback and Monica Michalski. If you have been to a special event, a Paws Meet 'N Greet or anything related to CEBR, you most likely have met these extraordinary women.

Jackie and Monica are part of our original volunteer team and their contributions to the success of CEBR are too many to mention (but we will try!). We normally profile one volunteer per month, but chose to have both Jackie and Monica in this month's feature due to their special shared experience with our beautiful Southern Belles.

Question: My almost 9 year old bulldog sometimes drools a lot. It does happen within an hour or two of her eating. I do space out her food which seems to help but it doesn't completely get rid of the issue. She does constantly lick while this is happening which I think might make it worse.  My Vet doesn't know the reason for it and just wanted to know if you heard or know what might cause this and/or what I could do to stop it when it starts.-- Sean P.

Answer: Sudden excessive drooling can be one of the first signs of an upset stomach. Since this seems to be occurring within an hour or two after eating you may want to reevaluate what she is being fed. Perhaps a change in diet is needed to accomodate her senior status. Dental problems are another possible culprit. The drooling and licking could be a reaction to an inflammation of the gums or a chipped or problem tooth. Dogs that lick their paws can also have hair embed in their gumline and it can be quite painfaul and irritating. Have your vet do a thorough oral inspection of her teeth and gums to rule out any problems there. Also check for ear infections which can cause dizziness and lead to abnormal drooling. After ruling all of these out, it may be a good idea to have blood drawn for a senior wellness check to ensure that something more serious isn't going on internally, as abnormal drooling can be a reaction to pain. If your vet does not regularly treat bulldogs, it may be worth your while to have her examined by a vet that specializes in bulldogs. Please write back to us if you would like a vet recommendation and be sure to let us know what you find out.

Question: My 2 year old bulldog Plato loves rawhide chews, but I've heard that these can be bad for bulldogs. Is it okay for him to have them if I monitor him closely when he is chewing them? -- Alexa B.

Answer: Although most bulldogs love to chew and do enjoy chewing on rawhide, it does pose serious hazards that are just not worth the risk. Bulldogs tend to inhale things and can swallow large chunks of rawhide whole. These can expand in the stomach or get lodged in the throat and pose a choking hazard. Additionally, because bulldogs have very strong jaws, they can turn a large rawhide bone into a long piece of gum that can also get caught in the throat and cause them to choke. Safer choices that will provide chewing satisfaction include large durable toys such as Kongs, heavy-duty Nylabones or deer antlers. And, of course, bulldogs should always be monitored when given anything to chew on.
