Log Homes and Bats - Not a good combination
July 27, 2010
Greetings!

Now that we are well into summer, we are getting some referrals from companies who specialize in removing bats from houses. Sometimes they work on log homes or cabins and in doing their work to remove unwanted bats, they discover that some of the logs have rot. THIS IS WHERE WE COME IN.

We are contacted to do the log repair work. When we know there is a bat problem, we want to make sure that the bats do not get trapped behind the logs once the rotten log has been replaced with a new one. We work in tandem with the bat removal experts to make sure this does not happen.

batRecently, we worked closely with Jason from "Bats by Day " to resolve some bat issues in several homes. He and his crew are very knowledgeable about these critters. Check them out on the Bats by Day .

Jason and Bats by Day serve Northern Wisconsin. For bat problems in Northern Minnesota, contact Rollie King "the bat man" at :218-841-6941 or 218-841-2264.

Either of these guys can help to get rid of your bats. They actually don't kill the bats --  they get them to leave your home. We have worked with both companies to rid log homes of bats. Edmunds & Company mostly does chinking work to prevent the bats and the "bat guys" put in "oneway" doors to get the bats to go out and not come back.

Excited about new blasting media - Recycled Glass
Recycled glass
recycled glass
We have recently started using a new product in our blasting work. Recycled glass has now begun to make its way into the market as a blast media. The advantages are that it is a recycled product, and it contains no free silica. These are both good things for worker safety and for our environment.

The glass media is not "shards" of glass but rather, it is grains much like the sand that we have been using. We are currently experimenting with the recycled glass media on several jobs. We have used it on a project in Houlton, WI where there was damage to the logs due to a fire, on a log-sided home in Shafer, MN and this week we will be using it on an old log home near Green Bay, WI.  So far, we are pleased with the results we are getting.

Sand and corn cob still have there place in our arsenal of media we choose from when blasting a log home. Sand will always be the best for taking off thick paints and coatings because it is such a heavy media.  Corn cob is sometimes preferred  because it won't etch glass or metal and is always great for working around windows and painted metal trim. Look for more information in future issues on using recycled glass for blasting log buildings.

NEWS FLASH!
Edmunds & Co. to partner with "Logs to Lumber"

Edmunds and Company has recently acquired the tools to make any "manufactured" log. More and more we are seeing rot in what we call "manufactured" log homes. These are cabins and homes that use logs that have been penciled or "turned" to a uniform size.

Many of these homes were built in the "boom" times of the last ten years. Some off these companies have gone out of business in today's economy. In these cases, when rot occurs, there is no going back to the manufacturer.

This type of log has always been tough for us to match up because our cedar logs are more like trees -- bigger at one end than the other. In the past we have had to hire out this work (turning or penciling) to log kit manufactures. This was expensive and they were often unreliable.

We are currently working with Brian at "Logs to Lumber" and we will soon have the capability to turn our cedar logs to any shape. We hope that this new capability makes us more competitive and will provide a better service to our clients. More to come on this...

Logs to Lumber will take trees from your property and turn them into valuable lumber. Brian is a reliable guy. If you hire him once... you won't be hiring anyone else to cut lumber again.

FAQA Frequently Asked Question
Q: There seems to be rotting wood below where two roof lines converge. What could have caused this?

A:
We see logs with rot in areas like this in our inspections of log homes. Upper roof lines are particularly difficult to provide good water management. At the same time, if the water coming off the roof is not properly taken care of, deterioration of finishes as well as rot can occur. Read More...
