Stories from the Springs
Did you know that Cheyenne Mountain State Park has around 4,000 stems of scrub oak per square acre? Good thing Mile High Youth Corps - Colorado Springs is working hard to thin some of the invasive species out!

Join the Corps!
MHYC is currently recruiting 19- to 24-year-olds for the 2011 AmeriCorps Leadership and Conservation Program.
This team-based experience provides diverse service opportunities in education, community outreach and youth development to achieve a common goal: environmental conservation.
From February through December, ACLC Corpsmembers commit to a minimum of 1,700 hours of service. During the summer and fall, they install energy/water saving measures in low-income homes while educating residents on the benefits of using less. The summer is spent outdoors, completing labor-intensive land conservation projects in state parks, open spaces and national forests. Summer projects include trail building, noxious weed removal and fire mitigation.

MHYC Graduate: A Shining Star Congratulations to MHYC graduate Adrian Davalos for winning the "Shining Star Award" from the Arapahoe/Douglas Works! Youth Council. This award recognizes a young person who has made great strides both personally and within his/her community. In July, Adrian graduated from the Corps' YouthBuild Program, where he attended the Conference of Youth Leaders in Washington D.C., gained construction skills and earned a GED.
His positive attitude impressed management at local company Greiner Electric, who hired Adrian as an Electrical Apprentice after his graduation. "Adrian is very inquisitive and eager to learn, which makes him a great employee" said Greiner's Jay Barton. Currently, Adrian works in the pre-fab shop, constructing installations for job sites. The apprenticeship is a total of four years, culminating in a Journeyman's License. "I hope Adrian can get through the entire apprenticeship and beyond to a leadership position," said Greiner Vice President Jeff Shigeno. "I'd love for him to return to MHYC one day as an example of what youth can accomplish with a strong foundation from the Corps."

Peek inside MHYC's 1801 Federal Blvd. headquarters building in Denver and you will recognize many improvements made over the last month, as part of the "Building Futures: Empower Today. Change Tomorrow" campaign. An elevator has been installed along the south end of the facility, allowing easy ADA accessibility for Corpsmembers and guests. New windows now enhance the first and second floors, brightening up computer labs, youth lounges and staff offices. Most importantly, the walls of three new (and much larger) classrooms have been framed out. And if you squint just slightly, you can almost see future Corpsmembers studying away at their desks. Because of the "Building Futures" campaign, MHYC will increase in capacity, productivity, efficiency and comfort. Additional funds must still be raised however to complete the project. Contact Director of Development and Marketing Connie Kreft to learn more about the campaign and how to get involved.

What's Your GPF?
Through August, MHYC Corpsmembers have installed 1,941 high-efficiency toilets (HETs) this year, which will conserve over 19 million gallons over water annually, the equivalent to 29 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Want to save water in your bathroom? Determine your toilet's gallons per flush (GPF) to see how efficient (or inefficient!) your loo really is:
1. Look for a date or GPF stamp behind the seat or inside the tank.
2. No stamp? Measure the tank's inside width from left to right (W) and depth from front to back (D). Place the measuring tape in the water (don't worry, it's clean!) to determine the vertical height. Flush the toilet and note the level the water lowers to before filling. The difference in the water levels equals (H). Calculate (W) x (D) x (H) X .00433 to discover your GPF.
3. If your toilet has a date stamp of 1993 or older and/or uses more than 2.5 GPF, you may qualify for a rebate from area municipal water suppliers:
Replacing an inefficient toilet could save you up to two gallons per flush and almost 9,700 gallons of water annually. If you know of a nonprofit or religious organization within Denver Water's service area, forward them to patrickl@mhyc.net as they may be eligible for new toilets. |
