The Corps' Summer of Service Program is following the footsteps of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). This public work relief program employed men in manual labor jobs related to conservation in the 1930s and 1940s.

Ready to Fly
Have you ever been sky diving? I haven't, not yet anyway. I hear the hardest part is when the door opens and the jump master yells "You ready?" At this point, any normal human would ask "Why am I jumping out of a perfectly good airplane?" But then they hold their breath, take a chance... and leap.
Hi, I'm Ed Flores. After serving as a Corpsmember in MHYC's Water Conservation Program for the past 10 months, I was recently promoted to a Water Conservation Crew Leader. Here, I will support Corpsmembers as they install High Efficiency Toilets (HETs) for low-income families. While I'm nervous to be full-time staff, I also feel a rush of adrenaline pulsing through my body. I know my fellow staff will support me, just like a parachute: Projects Coordinator Patrick Lundberg- my chute release; Program Coordinator Kelly Austin- my back-up chute; the other Crew Leaders and the skills I've mastered- my safety ropes. As this next adventure starts, I can't wait to step to the ledge and leap- ready to enjoy the ride.
*** MHYC intentionally created a Corpsmember "leadership ladder" to develop future staff members and the community's next leaders. Through this effort, young adults in the Corps can grow their skills within the agency and make significant impacts on MHYC's programs. "As the newest addition to staff, Ed has grown tremendously," said Director of Programs Brigid McRaith. "He'll be a wonderful asset for our next cycle of Corpsmembers."

Serving Sisters
For the Sinnott sisters, service to others is inherent. "Our parents and grandparents were amazing examples (of service)," said MHYC Programs VISTA Erin Sinnott. "They were always very generous with their time and energy." Here, she and younger sibling Jillian, a Summer of Service Program Corpsmember, reflect on their time at the Corps, their relationship and how they plan to make a lifetime of giving back.
What is it like working together at MHYC? Jilly and I don't work together on a daily basis, but it's been great to have a Corpsmember perspective on some of the educational components I'm developing for the agency. What have you learned from each other at work? I admire Erin's high energy and positive attitude. She's taught me the importance of bringing passion to everything you do. I really admire Jillian's ability to motivate people. She brings a lot of enthusiasm to the Corps and reminds me that hard work and laughter can go together. What do you hope others see in you and Erin? We hope people see our work and realize that there are many different ways to give back to a community. What's next for you? Jillian: I will begin my sophomore year at Saint Lawrence University, pursuing a multi-lingual major in Spanish, French and Arabic. Erin: My time with MHYC ends the first week in November and I hope to continue working with youth, education and service learning. |
