MHYC Featured on 9News
9News recently featured the Energy Conservation Program at Mile High Youth Corps (MHYC) and also highlighted the Corps as its morning newscast "Job of the Day." Thanks to MHYC Corpsmembers Jovanna Rodriguez and Dylan Miley, along with staff member Steve Lynch, who wonderfully represented the agency.

MHYC-CS Corpsmember Artemio Rodriguez

MHYC-CS Corpsmember Honored by Governor's Energy Office
Mile High Youth Corps - Colorado Springs (MHYC-CS) Corpsmember Artemio Rodriguez recently received a Residential Insulator Certification from the Governor's Energy Office (GEO). Working with MHYC-CS for nearly 11 months weatherizing low-income clients' homes, this certification is a testimony to Artemio's hard work and advanced skill level. "Artemio has gained a major advantage in the green industry with this recognition from GEO," said Site Director Nancy Wilson. "It proves that he knows how to correctly install insulation (among other energy saving measures) and will be a great asset as he moves forward in his career."

Service is deeply rooted in Artemio's life. Throughout middle and high school, he committed every summer to volunteering in his Kansas community. Artemio eventually moved to Colorado Springs to take classes towards a Natural Resource Management degree. Seeing the Corps as the perfect intersection between the environment and service, Artemio takes pride in his work with The Energy Resource Center, a Corps partner. "I enjoy the physical nature of my job and love making a difference in the community."

What's up next for Artemio? Upon the completion of his time at MHYC-CS, Artemio plans to use his AmeriCorps Education Award from the Corps to attend Northwest Renewable Energy Institute in Vancouver, WA. He would like to pursue a certification as a Wind Turbine Technician.

MHYC Corpsmembers planting trees on NYSD
National Youth Service Day Recap
In late April, 40 MHYC Corpsmembers joined Denver Parks & Rec and The City and County of Denver's Million Tree Initiative for National Youth Service Day (NYSD) in Stapleton's Westerley Creek Park. Despite the soggy weather, Corpsmembers planted over 60 new trees and shrubs. MHYC has participated in NYSD projects since 1999.

Thanks to the Stapleton Front Porch newspaper for featuring NYSD on the front page of its May edition. Read the story with wonderful quotes from Corpsmember Deja Sanders here.
