TEAM- Together, Everyone Achieves More
Life as a Corpsmember takes some adjustment: It's learning a new language filled with acronyms, it's gaining and giving trust to strangers, it's turning those strangers into teammates and eventually friends. New Corpsmembers have only a small taste of what's ahead of them. But their mouths are watering, and they look hungry.

MHYC's Water Conservation Program was featured on 9News' Colorado & Company in early February. Project Coordinator Patrick Lundberg and Senior Corpsmember Ed Florres, along with Denver Water's Cindy Moe, did a wonderful job representing the Corps and promoting the Water program. |

MHYC Receives National Honor
Mile High Youth Corps (MHYC) Energy Conservation Program received one of six national "Project of the Year" awards from The Corps Network at the annual Corps Forum conference on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 in Washington D.C. The Corps Network represents 143 service and conservation corps nationwide. "This program creates jobs for young people, promotes energy conservation and helps low-income residents save money on their utility bills," said MHYC Executive Director Dr. Kelly Causey. "It's an effective model and we're honored to receive the award."
2009 was a banner year for the Energy Conservation Program. Corpsmembers visited over 2,600 low-income households, installed over 25,000 Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs and performed other energy-saving measures. "This program has been a huge success and we all want it to continue." The Corpsmembers' efforts will save approximately $1,000,000 for these residents over the life-cycle of the materials.
The award specifically honored MHYC's collaborative efforts with local organizations and government partners in delivering conservation services to traditionally underserved areas. "To reach thousands of low-income residents takes a coordinated effort," said Causey. "Denver is fortunate to have nonprofits and government agencies willing to collaborate." |

From "High Five" to a Mile High
Attempting to make sense of my first week at Mile High Youth Corps is probably as hard as grasping the idea that I am the proud owner of a Midwestern accent. I thought I was speaking like the rest of you...eh?
Hi, my name is Stephanie Stocking and in early February, I joined the AmeriCorps Leadership and Conservation Program at MHYC. After inhabiting America's "High Five" (Michigan) my entire life, I recently felt the urge for change. Not just a change in my life, I wanted to somehow create a difference in the world. Since arriving in Denver and trying to absorb the potential of the next 11 months, I can't help but recite a great quote by Margaret Mead: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." There is no way to put into words how I am feeling about being a part of this program and how much I've already experienced. All I can say is that I can't wait to see what comes next.

Interesting in Volunteering?
Mile High Youth Corps has several volunteer opportunities available in the upcoming months:
TUTORING
The YouthBuild Program is looking for individuals to tutor current Corpsmembers as they strive to obtain a GED. Volunteers must commit to at least one hour each week. Time slots include 11:00 a.m. to noon (Monday - Thursday). Some evening opportunities may be available. Contact Tom Dillow at tomd@mhyc.net or 303.433.1206 (opt. 2, x221) for more information.
MHYC JOB PANEL
The Corps is planning a Job Panel on April 30, 2010 to showcase a variety of employment options to current Corpsmembers once they leave the agency. If you'd like to talk about your job and share your company's internship and/or employment opportunities, please contact Jason Vaughn at jasonv@mhyc.net or 303.433.1206 (opt. 2, x244).
ONGOING OPPORTUNITIES
MHYC seeks individuals to help with mock interviews and to host job shadows for Corpsmembers. These opportunities are ongoing and do not require committing to a set schedule. If you'd like to prepare a Corpsmember for success in the workplace, contact Jason Vaughn at jasonv@mhyc.net or 303.433.1206 (opt. 2, x244). | |
