2009 YouthBuild Corpsmembers
Stretch Your Dollars Further at MHYC
Over the past year, the need for MHYC's programs has expanded to an all-time high. With an 8.6% youth unemployment rate (and 21% among 16- to 19-year-olds specifically), we currently process 10 applications for every one position available. Stretch your year-end charitable contribution further at the Corps. Your investment will not only impact hundreds of youth next year, it will help families in need and conserve our natural resources. One gift, three powerful outcomes.

Leadership Council Elections
The YouthBuild Program recently elected eight Corpsmembers to represent the group on MHYC's Leadership Council. Highlights from the speeches:

- Pedro shared that he may be quiet but has a strong voice.
- Alanis wants the challenge of being on the Council.
- Fred believes that helping others will help him too.
- Robbie would put others before himself.

MHYC Corpsmember Corey Brown
MHYC Corpsmember Receives National Honor

We are pleased to announce that Mile High Youth Corps' Corey Brown has been selected as one of six young adults to receive the "Corpsmember of the Year" award from The Corps Network, which represents 143 service and conservation corps nationwide. "Corey is a powerful example of what can happen when someone who has faced significant adversity and personal obstacles decides to embrace the wide span of opportunities available at MHYC," said Director of Programs Brigid McRaith. He will attend February's Annual Corps Forum in Washington D.C. to receive his award and represent some 29,000 Corpsmembers from across the country. "My time at the Corps has made me stronger and more confident," said Corey. "The responsibility, diverse work environment and freedom to challenge myself has helped me grow as a person."

Since starting with MHYC in June, Corey has worked with his fellow Corpsmembers in the Water Conservation Program to install High Efficiency Toilets (HETs) in low-income homes throughout Denver. In August, Corey was promoted to a Senior Corpsmember position and was elected to the Leadership Council, to offer Corpsmember voice to organizational matters. "He demonstrated professionalism, integrity and work ethic each day and pushed himself to serve as a leader amongst his peers," said Brigid. Corey will graduate this month with perfect attendance and can be proud of all of his accomplishments at MHYC. When he leaves the Corps, Corey will have personally installed 175 HETs throughout the community. His efforts alone will help save approximately 1.5 million gallons of water each year.

Congratulations Corey and thank you for your service!

Conservation Cheer!

Follow a few tips this month to add some green to your holiday festivities.
  • Replace burned out or unsafe lights with Light-Emitting Diode (LED) holiday lights. They use up to 93% less energy and last approximately 50,000 hours (compared to 2,000 hours of traditional mini lights). Also, incorporate a timer into your decorations so that your lights are on only when needed.
  • Once you've found those perfect presents, consider eco-wrapping by creatively using newspaper, old magazines, twine and bows from previous celebrations.
  • Throwing a party? In the kitchen, bake your dishes together and avoid opening the oven unnecessarily. Also, wait until you have a full load to run your dishwasher or clean dishes by hand.
