Avid Outdoorsman Honored Through MHYC's Angler Education Program
Travis Kubiak had two loves in his life: kids and fishing. After he passed away in 2004, his parents Renee and Dan wated to honor his legacy and searched for something that would include both of his passions. Mile High Youth Corps seemed to be the perfect fit. Creating the D. Travis Kubiak Memorial Fund at the Denver Foundation, the Kubiaks soon partnered with MHYC to establish the Travis Kubiak Angler Education Program in 2008. "Knowing that Travis' amazing spirit and what he valued most in life has become a lasting and integral part of MHYC is extremely rewarding," said Renee. This summer, a crew of six MHYC Corpsmembers worked with Colorado Division of Wildlife staff to teach 50 angler education clinics to approximately 2,800 school-aged children. The clinics included everything from fish trivia, to environmental education and how to actually catch a fish. The children received their own fishing pole and learned the critical cheer of "FISH ON!" when they made a catch. For their service, all eligible Corpsmembers earned $1,000 AmeriCorps Education awards to use for post-secondary education. "Travis would be overwhelmingly proud that this program celebrating his memory provides scholarship support for youth," said Renee. "But most of all, he would just love that thousands of children are getting an opportunity to laugh in the sun, enjoy nature, learn the joy of fishing and just be kids. He would be right there with them yelling out 'FISH ON!'"

Lt. Gov. O'Brien Joins Hike for Youth |
|
Colorado Lieutenant Governor Barbara O'Brien will attend this Saturday's Hike for Youth in Golden Gate Canyon State Park to promote her initiative in connecting Colorado youth to the outdoors. "Hiking and being outside makes kids healthier, more independent and ready to learn," said Lieutenant Governor O'Brien. "Connecting kids to the outdoors shouldn't be trivialized."
Hike for Youth is an active, outdoor fundraising event that raises essential funds for MHYC programs. "We're thrilled to have the Lieutenant Governor attend the sixth annual Hike for Youth," said Mile High Youth Corps Executive Director Dr. Kelly Causey. "Her focus of getting youth active in the outdoors aligns directly with our mission."
