Use Only What You Need

Conserve Water This Summer

- Water your yard early in the morning or later evening.
- Keep grass blades between 2-3 inches tall to help reduce evaporation.
- Clean driveways, walkways and patios with a broom, not a hose.
- Use sprinkler hoses and watering cans in your garden.
- Mulch. Keep 1-3 inches of mulch around plants and shrubs so they require less water.

Display your support
for water conservation
with a Denver Water "Use Only What You Need" sign in your yard or window. Contact us at emcc@mhyc.net to order your sign by June 1st. For every sign we distribute, MHYC will receive a $1.50 contribution to support our employment and education programs for urban youth.

Mile High Youth Corps Awarded AmeriCorps Recovery Act Grant
The Governor's Commission on Community Service announced this week that Mile High Youth Corps was awarded an $832,831 American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) grant from the Corporation for National Service. The grant will support the expansion of the Colorado Youth Corps Leadership & Conservation Program, a statewide program involving six Colorado youth corps of which MHYC serves as the lead agency. The recovery award is for June 15, 2009 through December 31, 2010 and will allow the corps to engage 241 additional youth on projects that conserve energy and protect our public lands while preparing Corpsmembers to succeed in the workforce. This recovery funding will help five participating corps expand to meet the needs of their local youth who are struggling to find employment and training opportunities in this tough economy.

Celebrate service at the Governor's Service Awards Ceremony and rally on Friday, May 15th, part of Colorado's AmeriCorps Week. The ceremony starts at 9:00 a.m. on the west steps of the State Capital Building in Denver.

Vail Resorts Sponsors MHYC's National Youth Service Day Project
The Big Dry Creek Trail and Open Space in Westminster has 258 new trees thanks to the hard work of Vail Resorts employees, Mile High Youth Corps, REI and Westminster residents. Vail Resorts signed on as a new corporate sponsor for MHYC and, through their Vail Resorts 360 program, provided a cash contribution and 72 volunteers for the project on April 25th. MHYC AmeriCorps members served as leaders for the day, directing the volunteers and ensuring that everyone had a good time.

National Youth Service Day was the first time the Corps has partnered with Vail Resorts on a large-scale service project, but due to both organizations' focus on youth and the environment, it will likely not be the last. Vail Resorts 360 program is an umbrella program for three initiatives of the company, including charitable giving, employee community engagement and environmental stewardship. "The Corps' commitment to helping young people develop skills needed to succeed while making a difference in their communities aligns directly with the values of the Vail Resorts 360 program," said Vail's Chief Executive Officer Rob Katz.

The project was a great example of a public/private partnership with Vail Resorts and REI providing funding for the trees and supplies as well as volunteers, Mile High Youth Corps providing technical expertise, leaders and volunteers, and the City of Westminster coordinating the project and getting city residents out to help. Over 175 people participated in the project.  "National Youth Service Day made a tremendous impact on the area," said Patti Wright, the Open Space Volunteer Coordinator with the City of Westminster, who manages the Big Dry Creek Trail. "It was a great feeling of accomplishment for such a large group of volunteers."

Corps to Double in Size During Busy Summer Season

MHYC's busiest season is right around the corner and staff have been busy hiring Corpsmembers and setting up service projects. After that last school bell rings, instead of heading off for lazy summer days by the pool, 58 young adults will join the ranks of MHYC and spend their summer getting things done in our community. These youth will work on seven different crews and complete projects focused on improving our parks and public lands, conserving water and providing environmental education. Joining the 17 AmeriCorps members and 27 YouthBuilders that have been serving with MHYC since February, these young adults will be working throughout the metro area from June 1st through August 13th. To see if a crew is working in your area, check our events calendar throughout the summer.

The current economic situation has caused an incredible spike in demand for MHYC's services as unemployed adults compete with teens for jobs. The Corps received seven applications for every one available position this summer.  With Recovery funding and other support, MHYC was able to add 14 additional summer positions compared to 2008 and will continue to hire more youth throughout the remainder of the year and work to secure additional funding for greater expansion.  Click here to donate to these efforts.
MHYC Hosting National Grants Training: July 13-17, 2009

The Grantsmanship Center's logo

The Grantsmanship Training Program is a comprehensive, hands-on workshop that covers the complete grant development process, from researching funding sources to writing and reviewing grant proposals. More than 110,000 nonprofit and government personnel have attended this fast-paced, five-day workshop, which is followed with a full year of membership support services. MHYC is helping to bring the training to Denver July 13-17 to assist other Colorado agencies in improving their proposal-writing skills.

During the workshop, participants learn the Center's proposal-writing format, the most widely used in the world. In addition to practicing advanced techniques for pursuing government, foundation, and corporate grants, participants work in small teams to develop and then review real grant proposals.

Participants gain new skills, professional connections, and follow-up services for one year, including a professional proposal review, access to the Center's exclusive online fundraising database, and an array of other benefits.
