 ACLC Corpsmember Steve Lynch
Finding the "Best of Both Worlds"

In early February, Corpsmember Steve Lynch set out to follow in his mother's footsteps. "The spirit of community service was instilled in me from my mom," said the 23-year-old from the Chicago, Illinois area. Desiring to join AmeriCorps, Steve felt torn between serving in the wilderness or in an inner-city environment. "I enjoy the outdoors but also wanted exposure to aspects of urban culture that I wasn't familiar with. Mile High was the best of both worlds."

Part of the AmeriCorps Leadership and Conservation Program (ACLC), Steve has spent the first quarter of his 11-month commitment helping low-income households save energy and money in their homes with the Energy Conservation Project. "Taking care of the environment is the number one responsibility of my generation." In May, Steve will acquire a leadership role with the Summer of Service Program and provide direction to a crew of younger Corpsmembers working in public parks and open spaces. "I'm excited for the challenge to figure out how to make a small group thrive."

Long-term, Steve is considering a career in the green jobs industry and believes he'll always draw on his time at the Corps. "I've learned so much from working with my fellow Corpsmembers, the staff and our Energy clients. These interactions are what have really shaped my experience."

Use Only What You Need
Support the Corps by
Promoting Water Conservation

Since the launch of our Water Conservation Program in 2007, Mile High Youth Corps has helped Denver Water customers save approximately 60 million gallons of water annually. This year, we hope to save an additional 30 million gallons through the installation of 3,000 high-efficiency toilets in nonprofit organizations, low-income households and faith-based institutions. You can support our efforts by promoting water conservation with a "Use Only What You Need" sign in your yard or window. Contact us at emcc@mhyc.net to order your sign by June 1st.

For every sign we distribute, MHYC will receive a $1.50 contribution to support our employment and education programs for urban youth. So, just by putting a cool, free sign in your yard you can help save water AND support green jobs training for youth. Order your free sign now.
