Earl Alto (Player): I like the facility. It is well run tournament. I would like to see more people participate in such events.
Dayo Mukuola (Player): Very good tournament. Relaxing environment. Look forward to coming back next year.
Linda Hsing (Referee): This is a new facility, it is very nice. Happy to see many people from San Diego, Nevada and Arizona. Two junior participant girls are wonderful. They are challenging even some of the male top players. Brenda as well as Ellen Hoang took the top seat players to 5th match before losing. Very impressive.
Nick Mintseveras (Player): This is a great benefit to the community. You have a great facility here. Nice people. Well organized.

Cathrin Graff (Player's Mom): I love the new facility. I like this flooring with the multi-purpose surface. You have great mix of players. My son William Griff is playing in the tournament.
Le Tuan (Player, San Diego, CA): It is beautiful and first class place. Well lighting. Enjoyable place.
Vartan Taroyan (Player, Glendale, CA): I enjoyed this tournament. Great flooring and perfect lighting. Coordinators are very friendly. Would love to come back again for the next tournament.
Daryl Sterling (Player, San Diego, CA): Really like the flooring. It is very important for my foot to have a good grip. This flooring is great. There are no dark spots. Everyone is nice and friendly. It is run very efficiently. Definitely will come back again.

Ararat Choir Concert

The Homenetmen Glendale Ararat Chapter's choir, conducted by Alenoush Yeghnazar, held its 4th annual concert on May 2nd, 2010 at the First Congregational Church of Glendale. The night began with classical piano played by guest musician Vatche Mankrian, who ended his set with his original composition, "Suite After Komitas".

After a brief intermission, the 35 member choir, accompanied by Victoria Simonian on piano, took the stage to perform 14 Armenian folk songs, including well known pieces by Komitas and Altounian. The choir wrapped up the night with "Yaman Yar", a song by Altounian.

The concert was another success for Ararat's Cultural Division, whose mission is to educate our youth about our cultural heritage and promote high quality cultural events.

Fresno Tournament

On April 16 through 18, 2010, 19 of our Ararat Basketball E and D division teams participated in an exciting and fun tournament at Fresno. Our young players joined other Homenetmen Chapters in an accelerating, exciting and fun tournament. Our boys and girls not only enjoyed the weekend with other young Armenian players, they also competed and played their hearts out.

They made new friends and memories. Just like any tournament we won games and lost, but our players' sportsmanship and their smiles and laughter made our Chapter one of the happiest Chapters. We are proud of our members and we congratulate our champions. The tournament was a success in many ways.

Scouts' Dinner Dance

On May 1, 2010 Homenetmen Ararat Chapter's Scouting Division held its annual Dinner Dance. The Shahinian-Baghdassarian Hall was filled with over 280 guests who were there to have a good time and support our scouts at the same time. The Master of Ceremonies was Marina Manoukian, a ranking scout in the past and mother of two scouts, now. The presence of over 90 scouts made the evening into a fun-filled sensation. The organizing committee for the event consisted of 22 of our devoted and energetic scout parents, some alumni scouts themselves.

The proceeds from this event will support funding the Scouting Division's annual programs. One such program is the Pan Armenian Jamboree held in Armenia. This year 16 of our scouts will participate in the 9th Jamboree which takes place once every four years. They will be joined by Armenian scouts from all over the world in July 2010 for two weeks in this wonderful and unforgettable gathering in our homeland.

On behalf of the Committee and Scouting Division we thank everyone for attending the Dinner Dance, and their unconditional support and encouragement, always.

Inovative Method to Teach
Coversational English

A new method of teaching English has been introduced at Glendale Community College at the request of ESL students. Roxanne Rafii, an Equal Opportunity Placement Services counselor, has created the Conversation Club. Students are allowed to join any time to learn or better their conversation skills speaking with other students. This open style of teaching takes the edge off of an intimidating classroom and allows for free flowing debate. Classroom curriculum is composed mostly of debates on subjects decided by Rafii and GCC professor and club facilitator Hoover Zariani. Students are then able to practice their English skills and learn from one another.

The club prides itself in creating not only a place to learn a language, but to learn about different cultures. The students are encouraged to use personal experiences within debates thus creating a ripple affect of knowledge being shared.

There are only a handful of participants currently in the club, but the club has set out to have enough participants to branch out into separate debate groups.
