10th anniv logoGreetings!

Welcome to the July issue of Russian Pointe Newsletter. In addition to our latest news and upcoming events, we are pleased to present an exclusive interview with Janelle Cooke of the Colorado Ballet, in this month's Spotlight column. Janelle is a fascinating person as well as an exquisite dancer.

Next week, I travel to Russia, Germany and Greece. I will make one of my frequent visits to our factory in Moscow, where I consult with the skilled craftsmen who create our beautiful shoes. In Germany, I will be visiting Werner Kern, the makers of the spectacular ballroom shoes that we feature at Russian Pointe Dance Boutique (see the article below). Look for photos in the August Newsletter.

Russian Pointe
We are proud to introduce a new Russian Pointe symbol, which appears on
all of our new marketing and will soon grace new products such as scarves, men's ties, key chains, dance bags and, of course, T-shirts. Soon, this symbol will be recognized both in and out of the dance community, as representing sophistication, luxury and elegance.

We have also produced mailing cards to remind dancers of the importance of skilled, hands-on pointe shoe fitting. Authorized retailers may request samples, as examples of the Boutique's marketing.
Spotlight...
Janelle Cooke of Colorado Ballet

Janelle Cooke columnsJanelle Cooke is a quintessential ballerina for the 21st century. A soloist with Colorado Ballet, Janelle is in love with her art, and passionate about the world around her. Her performance style encompasses the most delicate and ethereal as well as the most dashing and vivacious. To her artistry she brings not only training and expertise, but also rich and varied life experience.

Janelle's background includes Royal Academy of Dance syllabus (with exam work until age 14), Vaganova technique and training within the Balanchine style. She calls it her "potpourri" training. After study at Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan (where a visit from Eliot Feld's Ballet Tech opened her eyes to contemporary ballet choreography), Janelle joined Colorado Ballet, where she has danced for her entire 13-year professional career.

Russian Pointe How have the different elements of your training worked together?

Janelle Cooke My primary training in RAD was beneficial for developing a strong technical understanding of body positions and placement. Balanchine [training] allowed me to learn to move freely, and to explore musicality. Vaganova was very good for my strength and port de bras. I also studied jazz, modern, tumbling and the tiniest bit of tap, which helped me to be a well-rounded dancer.

RP Do you prefer dancing classical or contemporary roles?

JC One of my favorite things [about Colorado Ballet] is the diverse repertoire. Gil Boggs, our new artistic director, has been here two years and has really maintained that diversity.

A Leap Across the Atlantic

In her memoir, Mrs. Ellis tells of her career as a soloist in Sadler's Wells Ballet (now Royal Ballet), legendary figures in dance and performing arts, historical events including World War II, and her move with her husband Richard Ellis to Chicago, where they established the Ellis-Du Boulay School of Ballet. The reception will take place from 1 pm to 4 pm at the Boutique. Admission is by limited ticket sales at $75, which includes a signed copy of A Leap Across the Atlantic, champagne and hors d'oeuvres and traditional English high tea.
