Innovation Research and Technology Transfer
A seminar to help obtain funding

The Small Business Innovation Research Program (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program is the federal government's largest R&D grants/contract program targeted to the small business community. With over $2.5 billion available annually, it is arguably the best source of risk capital available to help fund the development of promising new technologies. SBIR/STTR can also serve as a pathway to equity financing.  STTR offers an opportunity for university faculty and researchers to participate in these programs.

This seminar will be delivered by Roger S. Cohen, Principal of Cohen International, a government contracting consultant and international business development firm. Roger coaches entrepreneurs through the SBIR/STTR proposal development process and helps write, review and critique draft proposals.  More information about the presented is available at http://www.rogercohen.com/sbir

The seminar will provide the opportunity to learn about the SBIR and the STTR programs, and how to prepare a winning SBIR or STTR proposal.  A limited number of private counseling appointments with Roger Cohen will be available to seminar attendees.

Employee vs. Independent Contractor - Seven Tips for Business Owners

As a small business owner you may hire people as independent contractors or as employees. There are rules that will help you determine how to classify the people you hire. This will affect how much you pay in taxes, whether you need to withhold from your workers paychecks and what tax documents you need to file.

Here are seven things every business owner should know about hiring people as independent contractors versus hiring them as employees.

1. The IRS uses three characteristics to determine the relationship between businesses and workers:

  • Behavioral Control covers facts that show whether the business has a right to direct or control how the work is done through instructions, training or other means.
  • Financial Control covers facts that show whether the business has a right to direct or control the financial and business aspects of the worker's job.
  • Type of Relationship factor relates to how the workers and the business owner perceive their relationship.

2. If you have the right to control or direct not only what is to be done, but also how it is to be done, then your workers are most likely employees.

3. If you can direct or control only the result of the work done -- and not the means and methods of accomplishing the result -- then your
workers are probably independent contractors.

4. Employers who misclassify workers as independent contractors can end up with substantial tax bills. Additionally, they can face penalties for failing to pay employment taxes and for failing to file required tax forms.

5. Workers can avoid higher tax bills and lost benefits if they know their proper status.

6. Both employers and workers can ask the IRS to make a determination on whether a specific individual is an independent contractor or an employee by filing a Form SS-8, Determination of Worker Status for Purposes of Federal Employment Taxes and Income Tax Withholding, with the IRS.

7. You can learn more about the critical determination of a worker's status as an Independent Contractor or Employee at IRS.gov by selecting the Small Business link.  Additional resources include IRS Publication 15-A, Employer's Supplemental Tax Guide, Publication 1779, Independent Contractor or Employee, and Publication 1976, Do You Qualify for Relief under Section 530? These publications and Form SS-8 are available on the IRS website or by calling the IRS at 800-829-3676 (800-TAX-FORM).

According to an April 2009 Nielsen Global Online Consumer Survey of over 25,000 Internet consumers from 50 countries, ninety percent of consumers surveyed noted that they trust recommendations from people they know, while 70 percent trust consumer opinions posted online.

On that note, I'd like to share a little story with you.

One of our contractors was recently in Mongolia, and was talking with the owner of a canoeing company.   The small business owner was talking about the development of the country in the years since the departure of the Russians and the establishment of democracy.  Small businesses have been created at a good rate alongside the influx of global companies setting up their massive business enterprises.

The small business owner in Mongolia continued on to add that this is an opportune time for such concepts for entrepreneurs and said that the Internet is the source of information for business opportunities, data, and sharing ideas with others that he relies upon.

The Internet is certainly seen as the primary source for important information for many people.  Is it for you?  Could you continue your daily operations without the use of the Internet?  What about weekly or monthly tasks?  For me it would be very difficult, and I can imagine it would be for many of you in our rural region.

September is National Preparedness Month.  Roughly 40-60 percent of small businesses never reopen their doors following a disaster, says Small Business Administration (SBA) Director Karen Mills.

Every person and business needs a disaster plan.  The SBA has a website with just that in mind.  Go to www.preparemybusiness.org and get to it!

Kathrine Bridgwater head shot     Sincerely,
