Roles of Presidents and Conferences -
Carroll College President

Carroll College President Tom Trebon is helping blaze the trail toward clear standards for presidential involvement in NAIA athletics.  As chair of a key committee composed solely of NAIA chief executives, President Trebon and seven of his colleagues representing the Council of Presidents are at the forefront of an association-wide effort to focus attention on heightened standards for NAIA membership.

Dr. Trebon's committee has taken aim at presidential involvement in conference governance.  "We know what a positive effect a strong conference has on the stability and reputation of its members," said Dr. Trebon.  "And we know that presidents' decisions on conference membership often can be traced to personal recruitment by their peers.  Presidential involvement in an active conference governance structure has become an essential ingredient in the success of college athletics programs today."

I hope you will find the second installment of this newsletter an easy and efficient way to learn more about your association. In this issue, the NAIA highlights the role of the college president and how conferences impact the association's strategic plan. These topics among others will be at the forefront of the 2008 NAIA National Convention. I look forward to seeing many of you there and hope the suggested schedule will help you determine what meetings and events to attend. Discussions among presidents in Louisville will include the recent dialogue between the NAIA and NCAA and how the two associations are working together for the benefit of intercollegiate athletics.

Over the last several months I have had the opportunity to visit in person with many presidents from NAIA member institutions. In early January I traveled to Florida for the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) meeting. Council of Presidents Chair Dr. Rick Artman hosted a breakfast for approximately 25 of your colleagues. We had a terrific discussion about the NAIA Strategic Plan and recent conversations between the NAIA and NCAA. For more information on this topic

I also had the good fortune to visit with presidents from the Mid-South, TranSouth and Florida Sun Conferences at the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools meeting. In addition, presidents of the California Pacific Athletic Conference and the Midwest Collegiate Conference welcomed me into their meetings. I look forward to similar opportunities to meet with college presidents in 2008 to learn your thoughts about working together to advance character driven intercollegiate athletics.

Sincerely,
Jim Carr
