Accreditation Day a Successby Rabbi Benjy Owen
Northwest Yeshiva High School has been accredited by Northwest Accreditation Committee (NWAC) since 1989. As part of NWAC's accreditation standards, each accredited school is required to host a Site Visit once every six years. A Site Visit consists of the school inviting a panel of expert educational professionals to visit the school to review the school's goals and its progress in attaining its goals. NYHS last hosted a Site Visit in 2005. One of the areas of our program that we reviewed at that visit is the Language Arts program. Based on the framework that we created around that visit, we have continued to improve the Language Arts program. Between 2001 and 2005, our students' average SAT score in the Verbal Section was 583. This year, our students' average SAT score in Reading is 604 and in Writing, 611. That means that our students on average score better than 80-85% of all test takers. Great Improvement! This year's Site Visit focused on the Torah Studies classes, our Learning Needs resources and the student learning environment. We were privileged to host six outstanding educational experts in their respective fields: Rabbi Simon Benzaquen, Rabbi Ron-Ami Meyers, Dr. Alex Jassen, Carol Meyer, Perry Sampley and Jock McLaughlin. These experts visited our classes, spoke to our teachers and administrators, interviewed students and consulted with each other to provide us with a list of commendations and recommendations in these areas. Over the next two months, we will review this input with our administrators, faculty and staff. Thank you to these dedicated individuals and to NYHS President Deanne Etsekson and Education Committee Chair Moshe Genauer for spending the day at NYHS. Thank you also to Ernie Olson, of NWAC, who assisted us greatly in making this Site Visit such a successful day. P.S. NYHS has been recommended for continued accreditation!

A Busy Basketball Week
by Grace Almo 2013
This week was a big week for our men and women's basketball teams. The women's team had three games, and the men had two games.
On Monday, the women's team went to Wallingford to play against Bishop Blanchet. The women's team had a rough week because many of our starters were injured or away. Ilana Greenberg was in New York, Milana Davydov was injured and ill, and Captain Julia Owen had a knee injury. So on Monday night, the remainder of the team played their hardest. It was a close and low scoring game, but our women played tremendous defense throughout the entire game. Grace Almo had 13 points, Halle Freidland had 6, and Marissa Almoslino and Elana Hasson both had four. The final score after playing hard, our women lost a disappointing game 30-32.
After resting on Tuesday, the women played vs. Holy Names Academy in Capitol Hill. Holy Names has a great record for having the top basketball teams in the state, so our women knew it would be a difficult game. Ilana Greenberg was back, but Julia Owen and Milana Davydov were still injured. We played phenomenal defense with great communication. Elana Hasson stepped up and played a great game, scoring 14 points. Disappointingly, we lost 34-43.
That same night, the men played vs. Bush School at our home gym. The JV men played a great game. Albert Hanan had 6 points, Joel Jacob had 7 points and 18 rebounds! Raffy Naim had 24 points, and we won! The final score was 37-25.
The Varsity men came out strong and played a fantastic game. Caleb Angel scored 15 points, and Tui Cohanim played a fantastic game making 11 points and 8 blocks. Asher Young, freshman, also had 9 points. We played a great game, and won! Final score was 52-25. We are so proud of the men!
On Thursday, all of our teams went to Tacoma to play a league game vs. Mt. Rainier Lutheran High. League games are very important for the women's team, and men's varsity team because they are what end up qualifying a team for the District Championships, and ultimately State.
The JV boys played first. They played tough defense, worked the ball around, and played hard. Raffy Naim, scored 28 points. Sadly, we ended up losing the game, but they fought hard.
This was a big game for the girls. Last year, our season ended of by losing a close game to this team at districts. Our women came out with the proper mindset of "the past is the past, and today is today." They were ready to win. All of our starters were back and ready! Milana Davydov and Julia Owen both scored 11 points with 11 rebounds, and Ilana Greenberg scored 10 with 15 rebounds. They fought hard, finished the game off and won! Final score 43-27! First league game was a success!
Varsity men came out and played fantastic team defense, but they struggled on offense to put up and finish shots. they held them to 18 points in the first half, and hustled hard. They had a great fourth quarter with a sense of urgency. Jacob Hanan, Captain and senior, scored 12 points. After playing hard, we lost 47-28.
The womens total record is 3-2. Men's varsity total record 1-4.
Thank you for supporting us!
Please come and continue to support our teams on Saturday Night at SHA as we play vs. Grace Academy. Women's game at 6:45, and Men's game at 8:15.
Please click here for a complete schedule.

Rachel Weinstein 2008 and Zelle Rettman 2010 at Brandeis I'm a senior at Brandeis University this year, so I'll be graduating in May (it's hard to believe it's already been four years since I graduated from Yeshiva!) I majored in Public Health and minored in Business, and am happy to say that I plan to work for a finance company in Boston next year. I've been very involved with Jewish life on campus, both within the Brandeis Orthodox Organization and the Brandeis Chabad student organization. I've also been juggling a full courseload with a job doing marketing and PR work for Cure Alzheimer's Fund, a local nonprofit that funds Alzheimer's research at various universities throughout the country. It's a lot to juggle, but as I'm graduating I really feel like I got the most from my Brandeis experience. I'm looking forward to seeing what the future brings!
