Seniors, Thursday Lunches and Our Students:A Message from Mr. Bob Court, Academic Dean

Dear Parents, Students and Friends,
We are well into our second semester of the 2010-11 academic year and things are moving along nicely. The seniors are excited while waiting anxiously for college acceptance letters and deciding on where they will continue their studies. Ms. Lauren Dean, our college counselor, has done an exceptional job this fall, helping the senior class with college applications, transcript requests and reference letters. As a University of Maryland graduate she is familiar with the east coast and many of the schools our students tend to favor.
I am very impressed with our seniors. They are a phenomenal group of young men and women! Their coursework, test scores, and desire to challenge themselves with high leveled electives has been most impressive. When I sit in on the Honors Physics class, or Anatomy/Physiology, or the Calculus group I am overwhelmed with their knowledge and expression. I cannot wait to see where they will go next and what their career plans will be.
I started a new tradition at NYHS this year. Each Thursday, I enjoy lunch and a delicious dessert with three or four students. I started with the seniors and freshmen and now I am meeting with juniors and sophomores. We have lunch and desert together and talk about issues important to them and their feelings regarding how the school is serving them. This has been a most valuable experience for me as it lets me get a sense of the pulse of the school and what our students like and dislike. I am finding that there is less concern about work load as the year progresses. However, it seems as though the first quarter can be overwhelming for some students, especially freshmen, who are not used to the demands of high school and for seniors who are balancing busy schedules of courses on top of applying to colleges and Israel programs. The administrative team is looking into ways to address both these issues for next year.
As most of you know, Dr. Breithaupt left us at the end of the semester and we were fortunate to hire Mr. Angel Lee to teach Biology and Physiology for the remainder of the year.
Should you have any questions or concerns feel free to call me at 206-232-5272 or email me at bcourt@nyhs.net
My best to you and your family. Shabbat shalom.
Bob Court
Dean of Academics

Post Shabbaton Exhaustion Wears Off - Onto Basketball
by Milana Davydov 2012
The majority of this week has been spent by students recuperating from the fantastic Shabbaton put on by Shabbaton committee head, Rena Genauer (2011), and the Shabbaton committee. The Shabbaton was jam packed with tons of amazing food catered by Eli Varon, fantastic Shabbat spirit, as well as lots of quality bonding time for all the grades. The Saturday night activity was a classic favorite, bowling! The Friday night oneg was a popular highlight among the students which included more yummy food, singing Shabbat songs, as well as plenty of social time. We were so pleased to see so many prospective freshmen at the Shabbaton! We hope to see them roaming through the halls at NYHS next year. Once again, special thanks to Rena Genauer (2011), Shabbaton committee head, as well as the Shabbaton committee who put together a spectacular and memorable Shabbaton! We are so excited and can't wait to see what next years Shabbaton has to offer!
As the NYHS basketball season head into their last week of official season play, we hope to see you all coming out and supporting your NYHS 613's men's and women's basketball teams for the remainder of our home games! Congratulations to the 613s women. They are going to Districts with 11-0 in their league and 14-4 overall. Because the 613s are top in their league, they seed first at Districts! Stay tuned.
There are only TWO more home games left for the men's and women's teams before we move on into an exciting post season. Of special note is our Senior Night on Tuesday, February 8th. This is our last home game and it is our tradition to honor our senior players. This year, we will be honoring Joey Becker 2011 and Raphael Kintzer 2011! Please join us on February 8th and honor our seniors!
Have a restful weekend and a wonderful Shabbat.
Shabbat Shalom!

Learning Resources at NYHS, a message from Rabbi Chaim Weiss
The Northwest Yeshiva High School is committed to meeting the needs of all our students. The Yeshiva partners with the student, the parents and the support staff to help each student feel successful in all of their studies.
The Yeshiva's first approach in supporting students is through mainstreaming. Teachers work with the students to provide appropriate accommodation and modifications necessary to support the students. Common accommodations include, but are not limited to, extended time on exams, use of a laptop/word processor, preferential seating, a note taker and additional time to complete assignments.
We work out an effective learning plan that best helps support the student and enables him or her to learn in the way that is most effective for their learning style. Read more...

Micol and Rabbi Aaron Bayer and Koby, Adin and Gabriella Micol (Rubin)Bayer 1994 -After graduating from NYHS in 1994, Micol spent a year Israel before enrolling and graduating from Stern College in 1998. Micol did the BA/MA program at Stern where she received a BA in Jewish Studies and continued on to earn a Masters in Jewish History. She also minored in Art.
Today Micol is married to Rabbi Aaron Bayer and they 3 children, Gabriella(2), Adin (4 and a half), Koby (7). They live in Cleveland, Ohio where Micol owns her own design business. She specializes in custom made paper cuts and ketubot and all things Judaica. Check out her website at Micol Designs. Micol also teaches Art at the Fuchs Mizrahi School.
Micol says that her experience at the Yeshiva inspired her to incorporate Jewish text and learning into her art work. Micol nurtures her connection with NYHS, even from a distance by creating the beautiful honoree gifts for the dinner and auction.
Thank you Micol for speaking with us this week!
Jake Baker 2009 is a sophomore at the University of North Dakota and is studying Aviation Management and UAS (Unmanned Aerial systems) Operations. Jake explains that Aviation Management is the business side of the aviation world and his degree requires one to get up to and including a commercial pilot's license. Jake is just one flight away from getting a private pilot's license which will allow Jake to fly alone, with passengers, internationally, as well as have many other privileges with an airplane. Jake however will be going a step further and will acquire his CFI license which will give him flight instructor status. After Jake gets his regular fixed wing (airplane) licenses, he will begin flying UAV's (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) which he is extremely excited to do!
Jake's university is the only civilian institution in the United States that offers a degree in UAS. In fact, Jake will be one of the first students without a military background to earn a degree in this pioneering field. Jake describes a not too distant future where cargo is flown by unmanned aircraft. According to Jake, Fed Ex is already exploring this option and the US government is allocating some 20 billion dollars for commercial UAS development. In some states, police already use such aircraft.
We asked Jake about life on campus beyond academics. Jake told us that he is "definitely more active" in the tight knit Jewish community this year. He participates in planning shabbat dinners and helps organize Jewish events. There is only a small Jewish community at the University and they get support from the local synagogue in the area. Jake says that he has had many experiences with people who had never met a Jew before. Jake goes on to say, "I love having the opportunity to share my religion with people, many of whom have never met another Jew before me. Despite this, I haven't experienced any anti-semitism or anti-Israel sentiment on campus. If anything, people are curious and very supportive. The only negative feedback I can give about the University of North Dakota is that it gets ridiculously cold in the winters. If you plan on visiting North Dakota... bring a Parka!"
Jake continues to tell us that he feels that NYHS fully prepared him for the college atmosphere, academically and socially.
"I feel ahead of my peers in discussion classes and just generally in the area of forming a solid argument. At the Yeshiva, I learned how to form an effective and logical argument to back up my position. Also, the Jewish values, cultural understanding and moral standards that Yeshiva has taught me have only been a positive influence and have helped shaped the person I am today. I am proud and honored to have been a student of Northwest Yeshiva High School."
Thank you to Jake for taking the time to share his experiences with us. Jake visits Level 5 Gemorah class
Benjy Balint 1994 is on a two-month fellowship with the Middle East Fellowship of the International Journalists' Program. Benjy is one of 7 Israeli journalists chosen for the program in Germany. He's writing for the weekly Die Zeit newspaper in Hamburg. Click here for the latest review of his book, Running Commentary.
Ben Siscovick 1999 works as an early stage venture capitalist in NYC at IA Ventures (www.iaventurepartners.com) and is married to a wonderful woman and supremely talented entrepreneur/jewelry designer, Jenny Klatt Siscovick (www.jemmawynne.com).
After graduating from NYHS in 1999, Ben spent a year at Yeshivat Hakotel in Jerusalem before attending the University of Pennsylvania where he earned his B.A. in Philosophy and Economics. After graduating from UPenn, Ben began his career as a web entrepreneur and founding partner at D202 - a full service web development and consulting firm focused on online communities and social networks. After leaving D202, Ben worked as junior investment banker at Allen & Company and Barclays Capital after which he earned his M.B.A. from Columbia Business School.
