Fat Burning Facts
| The fact is, you burn both carbohydrates and body fat as fuel during exercise. At low intensities, your body prefers to use fat as its main energy source. But, as your exercise
intensity increases, the body begins to use more and more carbohydrates and less and less fat. Above the lactate threshold (the point where your breathing can no longer keep up with your body's oxygen demands), you use all carbohydrate. If you exercise long enough (1.5 - 2 hours), you use up most of the carbohydrates that are readily available, and then your body switches to fat. Because of this, many people think that it must be better to exercise at a lower intensity so that a greater percentage of the calories they burn comes from fat. But, the fact is that it is actually better to workout at higher intensities, since you burn so many more calories. A lower percentage comes from fat, but it's a lower percentage of a much higher number, and the result is more total fat burned.
Of course, exercising at higher intensities has some extra risk to go along with the extra reward, and you should be cautious when beginning such a regimen. (Seems like a good spot to plug hiring a quality personal trainer - which we just happen to have. That was the plug.) But how to safely increase your exercise intensity is a subject for some future article.
The fact is, for fat and weight loss, the most important thing is that the total calories expended is greater than the total amount consumed. The source of the calories doesn't matter. So, work hard, burn fat, have fun!

| News of the Month | |
Co-Star of the Month is JF, who very quietly goes about her workouts with Trainer Gaye but just happened to mention that she can now fit into a "really cute skirt" that she hasn't been able to wear for 10 years.
Her Co-Star of the Month is HK, who in 1 month has lost 5 pounds and 6 inches in hips and thighs while improving to a B in push ups and an A in crunches. In addition to working out here twice a week (also with Gaye), HK does Jenny Craig and her cardio homework. Now she has had to switch to Trainer Jay for scheduling reasons and the pressure's on him to help her keep it up!
DG does her treadmill and knee rehab exercises religously (except when she's at the beach) and she feels stronger and leaner.
JenW's friends are asking if she has lost weight.
MRS was the self-described "MVP" of a workout since he had to work until 3 am that day.
NM and HF each worked out in the dark one morning when our power was temporarily out.
Healthy Habits is now on

Time Slots on Sale!
| Sometimes in the personal training business, you find yourself with some unexpected holes in your schedule that you really want to fill. Well, several of us have such holes and we are offering you a discounted rate to fill them - as long as you don't create another hole in doing so.
So, Linda, voted one of the 5 best trainers in town by this year's Memphis Magazine readers poll, has rare slots available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 - 4:30 pm and on Thursdays from 5-6 pm. So, the deal is, for the rest of this year, you can train with Linda during these specific slots, for $50 an hour instead of the usual $60.
And Mike, a training legend in his own mind, has openings for clients to share training with NM on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-7 am. The price depends on how many people take up this offer: if there are 2 people training, they each pay $35 instead of $42; if there are 3 people, they each pay $30 instead of $35; and if there are 4-6 people training, they each pay $20 instead of $23. You may commit to one or both mornings on a month - to - month basis, with the first one FREE. These prices are also good for the rest of 2010.
Call Mike at 684-1607 for information and registration.
