What's Going On |
New Tuesday Evening Forum Series: Episcopal 101
Adult Formation Ministries is offering a six-week forum series, "Episcopal 101," on Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. in La Paz beginning Tuesday, April 13. Join St. Philip's Rector, the Rev. John Kitagawa, in a journey of discovery about the Episcopal Church. This class will engage participants in learning about the basics of Episcopal Church tradition: history, theology and spirituality, liturgy (worship), decision-making. There will be many opportunities to ask questions and enter into dialogue.
75th Anniversary Multimedia Event
On Thursday, April 15, a very special fine arts event will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Church. This is the second event in celebration of St. Philip's 75th Anniversary in 2011. "An Offering of the Art Treasures of St. Philip's" will showcase some of the remarkable art treasures housed at St. Philip's, paired with a performance of one of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's crowning achievements, the Serenade Number 10 in B-flat Major. As the history of each work of art is revealed by an authority on the subject matter, it will be paired with a poem that fits with the theme or content, to enhance the experience of both art and music. Art works will be interspersed with movements from the "Gran Partita" Serenade, performed by a wind ensemble composed of Tucson's leading chamber and symphonic musicians, conducted by parishioner Dr. Thomas Cockrell. The evening will truly be a symphony of all of the fine arts. Admission to the concert is by donation (suggested donation $15).
Preceding the concert at 6:30 p.m. in the Murphey Gallery will be a festive reception, catered by Elle restaurant. Admission to the reception is $35 and includes preferred seating for the concert. To make reservations, contact Claude Deniz at 299-3481.
For more information about plans for St. Philip's 75th Anniversary celebration, see St. Philip's Web site.
Celebrated Girls' Choir at St. Philip's
On Sunday, April 18, St. Philip's will host the Tucson Girls' Chorus, who will sing at the 9 a.m. Holy Eucharist (including an anthem with our GIrl and Boy Choirs). This famed Tucson ensemble, directed by Marcela Molina, will then present a short recital in the church at 10:15 a.m. Their mission is to provide leadership and teamwork opportunities through music education and community service. Come hear them perform! Organ a la Carte: Visions of Genius
Please join Dr. Jeffrey Campbell on Sunday, April 18, for the final "Organ a la Carte" program of the season. "Visions of Genius" will feature masterworks performed on St. Philip's mighty Holtkamp pipe organ. Composers include Alain, Widor, Vierne and Bach. Join us for refreshments in the fishpond garden at 12:30 p.m. followed by the 45-minute recital at 12:45. Admission by donation. NOTE: No Breakfast April 18 Due to unforeseen circumstances, there will be no breakfast on Sunday, April 18. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Gifted by Otherness: A Course in Gay and Lesbian Spirituality
A new Wednesday evening forum series, "Gifted by Otherness: A Course in Gay and Lesbian Spirituality," is offered April 21 through May 26, at 7 p.m. in the East Gallery. This course draws from the book, "Gifted by Otherness: Gay and Lesbian Christians in the Church" by L.W. Countryman and M.R. Ritley. Gay and lesbian people are encouraged by Countryman and Ritley to adopt a positive attitude to spirituality and to take a pro-active role in the Church through telling their own stories, recognizing their spiritual gifts, interpreting spiritual writings in their own context, and refusing to apologize for who they are. Along the way, the course will review aspects of progressive theology, and take plenty of time to share stories among participants. Intended for gay and lesbian people, but non-gay and non-lesbian participants who are contending with spiritual issues relating to sexuality and who are willing to maintain safe space for other participants are most welcome. Led by Chris Eastoe, Ph.D., former Senior Warden at Grace St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Friends of Music ConcertTerra Voce: Bridging the Gap St. Philip's Friends of Music presents the flute/cello duo Terra Voce, in a program entitled "Bridging the Gap." Flutist Elizabeth Brightbill and cellist Andrew Gabbert will explore diverse classical and folk traditions ranging from Baroque to contemporary tango, and Brazilian choro to Irish traditional. Brightbill has been praised for her rich tone and versatility in interpreting contrasting musical styles and Gabbert for the depth of sounds and textures that he coaxes out of his cello. Together they have delighted audiences with their virtuosity, diverse and innovative programming, and engaging, conversational style of presentation. Admission is by donation to St. Philip's Friends of Music (suggested donation $15). For more information, contact FriendsOfMusic@stphilipstucson.org.
Phixers Phorums In the current economy, many people are looking for ways to save money whenever they can. Starting on April 25, the Philip's Phixers, a group of parish volunteers who meet weekly to do maintenance and repair work around the church (saving the church about $35,000 in recent years,) will sponsor a monthly series of classes on general home maintenance topics. These will be held at 12:30 p.m. on fourth Sundays. Classes will last about 1 to 2 hours. Professionals from the community will teach different topics each month. Some may be hands-on, so dress comfortably or bring a change of clothes. You may also want to bring a bag lunch. Our first class, on April 25, will be taught by Mark Tentschert from ACE Hardware. He will explain the proper way to fix a broken lamp (frayed cord, damaged plug, broken socket). All participants will receive a special discount from ACE Hardware. On May 23, Scott Calhoun of Zona Gardens will talk about rainwater harvesting. You've probably seen some of his rainwater cisterns made from highway culverts. If you'd like to learn how to make your own, this class is not to be missed! Alternative Space Service April 25 On Sunday, April 25, at 9 a.m. in the Children's Center Courtyard, we will celebrate Earth Day with a liturgy designed by composer-in-residence Sheldon Curry. One special feature will be "Glorify the Lord," based on "A Song of Creation" from the BCP, which will include a band, the children's choir, staff singers, and the congregation. The relaxed setting, as well as the new shade cloth in the Courtyard, will contribute to the family friendly worship experience. St. Philip's Day May 2
The annual St. Philip's Day Fiesta is Sunday, May 2. First Sunday music at the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services will be the popular Missa Brevis "St. Joannis de Deo", or Little Organ Solo Mass, by Haydn, with the adult choirs, soprano soloist Julie Harmon, and the St Philip's chamber orchestra. After the 11:15 a.m. service, different ministries provide food for this wonderful celebration. Proceeds go to the J2A Pilgrimage Fund. To sign up, please contact parishlife@stphilipstucson.org, or Sue Cross at 742-1398 or Anita Balthaser at 219-6112. |
Food for Thought
| Vestry Forum April 25 Addresses Budget On Sunday, March 21, and in a special e-announcement,the Rector announced specific reductions in staffing necessitated by St. Philip's 2010 budget. He concluded: "because the work of our staff members is central to the ministries we carry out as a parish, we will be doing less in the weeks and months ahead. Some of the gap will be filled by vestry members, ministry commissions and lay leaders who step up to shoulder more responsibility for implementing ministries. Ministry and program decisions will be guided by some basic principles: continue ministry programs that help parishioners to grow in faith; continue programs that keep our members engaged in doing ministry; and continue, even implement, ministry programs that attract new members."
Please join the Vestry at the next Vestry Forum on Sunday, April 25 (the date was reported incorrectly in some previous publications), at 10:15 a.m. in the Murphey Gallery, to learn more about how these budget reductions will impact our ministries and the role you may play through this difficult time.
 Border & Immigration Group
Richard Rohr writes about the influence of fear in our lives -- the result of being afraid of losing something. He says it masks itself to look like "reason, prudence, common sense, justice, or even religion." He goes on to say that only those who can get beyond their own egos and small selves can see fear for the imposter that it is. If we apply this wisdom to the Stranger in our Midst -- the immigrant -- perhaps we can let go of some our grasping and holding on. As we see in Isaiah, Chapter 56 and in the story of the Walls of Jericho, God does not like walls or barriers between people; He wants us to live and be as brothers and sisters. The Border & Immigration group helps us to see the Scriptural direction and the will of God in this matter. We meet the first Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. in La Paz. Bring your concerns, interest and ideas. For information ontact Suzanne Hesh at textilz@theriver.comor call 325-4469.
God Across Borders Intergenerational Advance
Join in a compelling journey of faith as people of all generations participate in an Intergenerational Border Advance. Our time for spiritual growth and community building first gathers us at St. Philip's on Friday evening, April 23, at 5:30 p.m. for supper and sharing and reflection with the Rev. Dr. Clare Yarborough. Clare will prepare us for our visit to the Border on Saturday.
On Saturday, April 24 (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.), we will join people of faith who we will meet at the US/Mexico border in the small and sleepy town of Naco, Arizona and Naco, Mexico, for the fifth "God Has No Borders" Border Procession, sponsored by Episcopal Border Ministries and led by the Rt. Rev. Kirk Stevan Smith, Bishop of Arizona. At the border, we will join in a work project and then participate in the ecumenical and interfaith event bringing attention and prayer to our national immigration crises and celebrating the coming together of people from the United States and Mexico. The Rev. Seth Polley, Episcopal Border Ministries, and the Rev. Sean Carroll, SJ, Kino Border Initiative, will lead reflection, education, and service sessions.
$25.00 retreat fee ($50.00 per family) includes materials, meals, and transportation. Scholarship assistance is available. For more information, including passport and other requirements, contact Greg Foraker or Rosalind García at the church office (299-6421).
Help Wanted!
The Parish Office is looking for volunteers for our Receptionist Ministry. If you enjoy working in a fast-paced environment, are detail-oriented, enjoy taking with people and providing help to the clergy, staff, fellow parishioners, and visitors to St. Philip's, this may be a rewarding ministry for you. To find out more about this ministry opportunity, please contact Steve Brong, Parish Administrator, or Stella Lopez, Executive Assistant to the Rector, at 299-6421 to schedule a time for us to sit down and discuss this position in greater detail.
Seeking candidates for several openings in the Evangelism Ministryof the Church ... This job is a GEM (greet, eat, and meet) ... The ideal candidate will be friendly and enjoy making new friends. Ability to make cookies, breads and cakes is an advantage, but not essential, since store bought items, and healthy stuff, are acceptable alternatives. Previous experience is not necessary as training is provided. Responsibilities consist of circulating in the Perry Garden with trays of food and seeking out people, preferably someone whom the greeter doesn't know, and who is crying out for someone to speak with, or who maybe is just hungry for gastronomic or spiritual food. These positions are part time (2 hours on Sundays every 2 months) so unfortunately benefits such as salary, paid leave, and medical plans are not available. However, the management structure is very experienced and supportive and job satisfaction rates are among the best in the country. This is a great career opportunity and we REALLY need YOU so please submit applications by contacting Tom Cross at cross1398@msn.comor 742-1398 or the church office at 299-6421.
