An Open Letter to St. Philippians
|
21 March 2010
Dear Friends,
As discussed at the Annual Meeting, St. Philip's 2010 Budget ($1,527,000) is significantly smaller than the 2009 Budget ($1,719,000). As passed, most of the reductions came from the staffing line ($150,000), and tentatively from the Diocesan Mission Share. Members of the Vestry Executive Committee and P&E met with Bishop Smith and members of the Diocesan Finance Committee late Monday afternoon. It appears that there will be some reduction in the Diocesan Mission Share. At Sunday services, at the Vestry's request, our rector, John Kitagawa, shared the following details of the staff reductions.
He began by saying, decisions about staffing were guided by the belief that the foundation of parish ministry requires:
--Meaningful worship --Quality preaching --Reliable pastoral care --Competent Administration --At St. Philip's, we need three full-time clergy
The reductions in staffing expense are at the level discussed in his letter to the congregation in the February issue of Loaves & Fishes. The specifics:
--1 Office support staff position eliminated --1 Finance Officer reduced to 4/5 time --1 Assistant Music Director reduced to 3/4 time --1 Director of Children, Youth and Family Ministries reduced to 3/4 time --1 Director of Adult Formation Ministries reduced to 3/4 time --Reduction of Staff Singers line --Reduction of the Child Care line --Elimination of budgeted overtime for sextons
--3 week furlough without pay for the Rector --3 week furlough without pay for the two Assistants to the Rector --3 week furlough without pay for the Parish Administrator --3 week furlough without pay for the Director of Communications --3 week furlough without pay for the Administrative Assistant to the Rector --3 week furlough without pay for the Music Director
Because the work of our staff members is central to the ministries we carry out as a parish, we will be doing less in the weeks and months ahead. Some of the gap will be filled by vestry members, ministry commissions and lay leaders who step up to shoulder more responsibility for implementing ministries. Ministry and program decisions will be guided by some basic principles:
--Continue ministry programs that help parishioners to grow in faith --Continue programs that keep our members engaged in doing ministry --Continue, even implement, ministry programs that attract new members
Please join the Vestry at the next Vestry Forum on Sunday, 18 April 2010, at 10:15 am to learn more about how these budget reductions will impact our ministries and role you may play through this difficult time.
Thank you.
Faithfully yours,
The Rev. John E. Kitagawa Rector
Mr. Richard Kuns Senior Warden
