The holiday season in Rome officially begins on December 8, with the Feast of the Immaculata, celebrated by the pope, who crowns the head of the Virgin Mary's statue in Piazza di Spagna and continues through the Feast of the Ephiphany on January 6, celebrated with toys and gifts for the kids and, of course, a big meal.

Rossini's opera in its Paris version conducted by Riccardo Muti in a new production directed and designed by Pier'Alli with choreography by internationally renowned Shen Wei, and lights by Guido Levi. Among the cast, the Russian bass Ildar Abdrazakov (Moïse) has sung the role at La Scala, and performed leading roles at the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco, Washington and Berlin operas. Nicola Alaimo (Pharaon) is also repeating the role he sang under Muti at La Scala, and has performed at theaters throughout Italy. The park around the Auditorium turns into a Christmas wonderland December 4-January 9. The grounds are merrily decorated with lights, the area pedonale is transformed into a skating rink, and a Christmas village with goodies for sale, as well as all sorts of surprises, appears on the grounds.

Each year, the Piazza Navona is filled with stands selling Christmas decorations, the ubiquitous old lady known as "La Befana" who delivers gifts on the day of the Epiphany, goodies to eat, gifts of all kinds, and little rides for little kids.
