School & Community Programs for Fall: If you work at a North Country school, or for an after-school program, child-care center or pre-school, senior center or nursing home, or any other organization or agency that might be interested in presenting arts or cultural programs, be sure to contact us so that we can email you our 2007-2008 roster and program guide this fall. The Arts Alliance is happy to work with you to develop customized programming, or to offer you a chance to be part of a block-booking program with other presenters.

Northern NH Visual Arts Map & Guide: We're working to develop a guide to our region's visual artists, galleries and arts businesses. If you are a visual artist or a member of a visual arts group, or if you run a gallery or arts-related business, please let us know about your activities. The Arts Alliance is pleased to present our ArtsNorth e-bulletin
for you and your guests, arranged by sub-regions from north to south and by date. Please be sure to confirm event details prior to attending. Use our "jump to" function (in the column to the left under the In This Issue section), which allows you to go directly to your geographical areas of interest. You can view our complete ArtsNorth calendar for additional details, and find events beyond the dates in this bulletin in our Plan-Ahead Arts Calendar. Links to both calendars are available in the Quick Links section.

If your organization is presenting a cultural event, email details to us as early as possible at [email protected] and we'll include it in the online ArtsNorth calendar and in our email bulletins. You can simply add [email protected] to your press list. Our e-bulletins cover two weeks at a time through Labor Day, three weeks at a time starting in September. Submission deadlines for upcoming bulletins are August 23 and September 13.

Middle Eastern Dance Programs Start August 15: Classes, Workshops & "August Extravaganza": Alia Thabit, a Vermont-based dancer and choreographer of Lebanese and Palestinian descent, leads a series of workshops and classes beginning August 15 and culminating in a performance of Middle Eastern dance at 7pm, August 25 at the Littleton Community House Annex, 120 Main Street, Littleton. The evening will feature Thabit and members of her company, and will include mini-lessons and open-floor dancing for the public. Recommended donation is $7 for adults, half price children, $20 for families. Tickets available at the door. Classes presented prior to the show include:
Bellydance Basics, a class for new and returning dancers, Wednesday, August 15, 5:30 to 7pm at the UU Church/Library, West Burke, VT ($15)
Going Deeper, for dancers with previous bellydance experience, Friday, August 17, 5 to 6:30pm at Catamount Arts, St. Johnsbury, VT ($15)
A special class of "Bellydance for Mothers and Daughters," Wednesday, August 22 from 10:30 to 11:30am at The Blue Door Loft, 15 Main St., Littleton. Learn this fun social dance in a warm, supportive environment. All ages welcome. Wear comfortable clothing, dress-up wear welcome, sparkles supplied. $10 for each mother and daughter or girl and woman pair (advance registration recommended); and
Two days of Middle Eastern Dance master classes on Saturday and Sunday, August 25 & 26, The Blue Door Loft, Littleton. Saturday workshops will include Dance, Stage Makeup with Courtney Shepatin, and Finding the Actor in the Dancer with William York Hyde. Sunday's classes will focus on learning choreography by Thabit. Full weekend package including show: $100 in advance; $125 at the door.
The programs are part of a dance residency presented by the Arts Alliance, funded in part by the New England Foundation for the Arts as part of the NEA Regional Touring Program. For additional details, call Alia Thabit at (802) 467-3193 or email [email protected].

"Now/ Then / When" Exhibit & "LogJam" Concert: A juried exhibit, featuring artwork that relates to Berlin's connection to the paper industry and the current state of change in the city, opens at the Northern Forest Heritage Park, Berlin, August 25 with a reception from 6 to 8:30pm, followed at 8:30 by "LogJam," an outdoor showcase of Berlin musicians performing both original and cover material in a stripped-down, acoustic setting, set to the backdrop of Berlin-themed video projections. Rachelle Beaudoin, mixed media artist and former Berlin resident, is curating the exhibit, presented by the Arts Alliance, Tri-County CAP and the Heritage Park. Both events are free; donations accepted. Exhibit hours through September 8 are Fridays through Sundays, 1 to 5 pm. See www.nowthenwhen.net for additional details.

Teaching Artist Institute August 22-24 at Lesley University, Cambridge, MA: Teaching artists in all disciplines are invited to Cultivating the Field, an institute for artist educators offered through a partnership between Lesley's Creative Arts in Learning Division and NECAP, the New England Consortium of Artist-Educator Professionals, for which the Arts Alliance serves as coordinating partner. Come get a student's-eye look at the critical components of a successful residency. Engage in hands-on, experiential workshops. Get re-inspired as an artist. Institute fee is $175. On Friday, August 17, at 7 pm, the Connecticut River Artist Group (CRAG) celebrates Pittsburg Old Home Day with "From Anonymous to Aponovich: NH History and Art" presented by the Currier Museum. On August 18, CRAG is sponsoring a "People's Choice" Art Show, featuring the work of area visual artists.
Exhibiting through August 22 - Brenda Kenney and Hans Klunder, members of CRAG, will be exhibiting their paintings at the Great North Woods Interpretive Center in the New Hampshire Welcome Center, just North of Colebrook.

August 16 - Stark Decency: Story of New Hampshire's Prisoner of War Camp
Dr. Allen Koop, Professor of History at Dartmouth College, researched the history of New Hampshire's WWII German prisoner of war camp in Stark and discovered how lasting friendships evolved between rural NH citizens and German captives.
August 23 - Irish Music Concert by "Shannachie" with Pat Heffernan & Patrick Keane
August 30, 2pm - Summer Houses and Hospitality in the North Country, a public discussion forum presented by the NH Preservation Alliance focused on its "Seven to Save" program of endangered historic properties. Free. Contact: NHPA (603)224-2281.
August 30 - Weeks State Park Annual Meeting & Presentation
Hors d'oeuvres 6pm, celebrating the 2007 programs. The evening program at 7pm, 400 Miles on the Connecticut River with Mike Tougias, will follow a brief Association Annual Meeting, which the public is welcome to attend.
Come early to presentations and bring a picnic supper, or climb the Fire Tower for one of the best views north of the notches. All programs are free.

Northern Forest Heritage Park preserves and interprets the history of the working forest and celebrates the multi-cultural heritage of the Great North Woods Region. This exhibit celebrates the art and legacy of Karl Drerup -- artist, craftsman, mentor and Plymouth Teachers College teacher -- by returning the work of this American master to public view. The exhibition focuses on the jewel-like painted enamels that brought national attention to Drerup at mid-20th century. In his small studio, Drerup created an Enchanted Garden in the imaginative imagery of his enamel plaques, bowls and trays.
