Chicago Marathon
10/11/2009
"It's your health,
make time!" |
I would like to thank everyone who supported me on this adventure to Chicago, and believe me, it was definitely an adventure.
To start off, Michelle and I arrived Thursday in Chicago to 55 degrees. A little chilly, but the forecast was 40 degrees at race time on Sunday. It seems God had some other plans. Friday it was 45 degrees, Saturday was 35 degrees, and by race time Sunday it was 23 degrees with 5-10 mile an hour winds. Oh yes, brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
I had some second thoughts that morning after sticking my hand out the hotel window. However, the thought of letting everyone down that had contributed time, effort, and patience to this endeavor soon had me getting dressed to run 26.2 miles in the freezing cold!
To make a long story short, I won the race! Well, since I race only against myself and my past personal bests, I beat me. It is always a win, when you train for 6 months and make it to both the start and finish lines.
As a side note, I was staying on the same floor as the team from Kenya and rode the elevator with these guys. Sammy, the new elite star out of the bunch, won the race in record time.
I want to thank everyone who donated to The American Liver Foundation. I really appreciate it, and so do all who suffer or may suffer from liver conditions.
Thanks again.

| Getting Ready To Ski |
Build Your Endurance If you want to get your money's worth out of that expensive lift ticket, you'll need plenty of cardio endurance. Most of us hit the slopes and plan on skiing all day, even if it's been months or years since we last skiied. By afternoon, you're so tired that you lose focus. And this is often when injuries and accidents happen.
Trust me, this is why I had to have knee reconstruction several years ago.
To prepare your heart and body for long-term skiing, you need to first have the right endurance training. You need a cardio program that should include 3 to 5 days each week of your favorite activity (the best for skiing include running, stairmaster, step aerobics, elliptical trainer and rollerblading). Try to have a variety of workouts lasting from 20 to 45 minutes. As you get closer to ski season, you can add additional time to your workouts so that you are peaking by the time you hit the slopes. |
| Percussing GB Meridian |
Shaoyang means the birth of yang, as it is between the taiyang meridian and yangming meridian. The manifestations of shaoyang gall balder (GB) meridian are Migraine, facial paralysis, bitter taste, bile duct disease, costal pain, reduced milk secretion, mastitis, low back pain, sciatic nerve pain, hip pain, vaginal discharge, irregular menstruation, knee pain, and the pain along the meridian.
The movement of percussing GB meridian is mainly for stimulating and enhancing the secretion of bile, as well as enhancing the absorptive capacity of the human body and providing elements required for the human hematopoietic system. Also, it will help the GB meridian to exercise, so that the blockage of the cold in the meridian will be expelled. The stagnation of the cold creates a blockage throughout the meridians. The lateral thigh is the easiest site to catch cold, and therefore, lead to the accumulation of cold.
The movement of percussing GB meridian is at the lateral thigh between the side of the hip (GB30) and the side of the knee (GB33). The lateral thigh may feel warm after percussion. The movement of such can accelerate the activities of the GB meridian and help the meridian on the lateral thigh to discharge the accumulation of waste. Therefore, this movement can also help reduce the lateral hip and thigh fat.
Midnight (11:00 PM ~ 1:00 AM) is the time of qi and blood entering into the GB meridian, so the movement should not be performed at this time. The day time would be a better choice, and a several minutes each time is plenty. Those who must not perform such movement are pregnant women. The elderly and the infirm should not perform excessively. Lastly, women who are going through menstrual period could perform less or not at all.
