Dean Gordon Retires
|

CNU has said goodbye to a cherished
friend. Dr. Douglas Gordon, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and
Sciences since 2003, retired in May after 29 years of service. He joined
the CNU faculty in 1980, devoting himself to teaching first-year students
and gaining recognition for popular classes like "Dogs in Literature."
On May 17, Dr. Gordon gave his final lecture at CNU when he made the
University's commencement address.
Throughout his tenure at CNU,
Gordon served the University in several capacities, some of which included:
- establishing the Paideia undergraduate research conference
- chairing the Task
Force on Curriculum and Academic Life, instrumental in shaping CNU's
liberal learning core curriculum
- chairing the Department
of English from 1986-90
- serving 10 years
as the faculty athletics representative
- founding CNU's
chapter of Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership society
Perhaps his greatest contribution
to the University was the vast number of close relationships he built
with faculty, students and staff. Here several friends and colleagues share their reflections. Do you have a personal story about Dean Gordon you would like to share? If so, please do so here.

St. Onge
Bids CNU Farewell
|

 Dr. Susan St. Onge, distinguished
professor of French, arrived at Christopher Newport College in 1970
and devoted her career to CNU and the Department of Modern and Classical
Languages (MCLL) until her retirement in May.
Knighted by the French government
for her contributions to the dissemination of French culture, Dr. St.
Onge is a master teacher who instructed and inspired CNU students for
more than four decades. Highlights of her illustrious academic career
include co-authoring the nation's best-selling French textbook; co-founding
the CNU Seminar Abroad Program; assisting in the design of the University's
current liberal learning core curriculum; and mentoring the next generation
of MCLL scholars. She will also be fondly remembered for broadening
the dietary horizons of Virginia students by introducing them to the
pleasures of French cheese.
On May 16, 2009, President
Paul Trible proudly conferred emeritus status upon Dr. St. Onge. The
CNU family will be forever grateful for her contributions to the fund
of knowledge of all things "français."
