Northern Virginia/Metro D.C.

The Northern Virginia/Metro D.C. alumni chapter has elected its first president, Jay Hamm ('04).
Born and raised in Colonial Heights, Virginia, he came to CNU in 2001 and majored in communication studies. Upon graduation, he moved to Falls Church, Virginia, and secured employment with Federal Sources, a market research company focused on federal information technology business development. After spending time learning the industry, he joined Data Domain, a data storage start-up company. Hamm anticipates a strong, growing alumni presence in Northern Virginia. "As our numbers here increase, a thriving alumni network will help us to help each other share in success through professional networking - be it your first job or your next job," he says. "It will also give us the chance to get together, share in fond memory, and keep acquainted with old friends."
The chapter's additional board members include: - Danielle Jeffries ('07), vice president - Leslie Hutchins ('04), secretary - Heather Boyd ('06), member at large - Nadine Boone ('95), member at large - Steven O'Dwyer ('06), member at large - Ilysa Schrager ('07), member at large - Lauren Crovato ('06), member at large - Pete Smith ('88), member at large - Nikki Wenzel-Lamb ('95), member at large - Amy Richardson ('07), member at large

Alumni Notes
Events Bring out Alumni
Have you been back to campus recently? Many of you have, and there are more opportunities in store for you to visit us!
Pre-Game Receptions Nearly 100 alumni attended pregame receptions on January 10 and February 20 prior to CNU men's basketball games. Diane Hagemann, director of alumni relations, notes, "It was great to see our alumni athletes return for the events, as well as other alumni who haven't been to campus in a while." January's event was sponsored in part by Liberty Mutual, CNU's alumni affinity insurance partner. Alumni House Meeting Alumni met in January at the president's residence where they heard exciting news about the alumni house campaign. President Paul Trible and campaign co-chairs Scott Millar ('85) and Henry Jones ('75) made presentations. The future facility will serve as a site for alumni reunions, post- and pre-game events, and maintaining CNU history. To learn how you can support the alumni house campaign, please contact Diane Hagemann at diane.hagemann@cnu.edu or (757) 594-7712.

Part of Arcadia Publishing's College History Series, Christopher Newport University represents the first comprehensive look at CNU's history to be published. It chronicles the institution's dramatic story using more than 200 images. Westcott Cunningham (the college's first president), this volume was written collectively by early faculty, staff and students who shared with Cunningham the adventure of building a public college where there was none. The book contains approximately 50 essays and 100 pictures capturing the tone and culture of the times. To obtain your copy, send an e-mail to cncmemories61_71@yahoo.com. Notables on Campus: Stephen Flynn
Your alma mater continues to host notable guests on campus through forums and events open to our alumni. A February lecture, "Port Security in Hampton Roads," featured counter-terrorism expert Stephen Flynn.
The Ira A. Lipman Senior Fellow for Counter-Terrorism and National Security Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, Flynn is the author of The Edge of Disaster: Rebuilding a Resilient Nation. At the council, he directs an ongoing working group on national resilience and homeland security.
Since 9/11 Dr. Flynn has provided testimony 22 times on Capitol Hill. From August 2000 to February 2001, he served as lead consultant on the homeland security issue to the U.S. Commission on National Security. He has served posts under the George H.W. Bush and Clinton administrations.
The lecture was co-presented by the University and The Mariners' Museum. Through a unique partnership between CNU and the museum, The Mariners' Museum Library is housed at the University's Trible Library. It contains the largest maritime collection in the Western Hemisphere with 78,000 volumes, 1 million manuscript items, 600,000 photographs, and several thousand maps, charts and ship plans. |
Share Your News and Information
Calling all alumni! Do you have recent news to share with us - a promotion, marriage or new birth, perhaps? If so, please e-mail your recent milestones and achievements (including photos) to diane.hagemann@cnu.edu for possible inclusion in our alumni magazine. By sharing your news, you help to keep CNU alumni connected.
Please also remember to update your contact information so we can stay in touch. And please let us know if you serve as an alumni contact for any campus organizations. We want to engage a broad spectrum of alumni in our campus and chapter events.

Society Membership Changes We have exciting news to share. All CNU graduates are now considered a part of the Alumni Society and are not required to pay dues. We encourage alumni to make a gift to the Fund for Academic Excellence (see top left corner of this issue).
An alumni "passport" in development will identify alumni when they visit campus and carry related on-campus benefits to be determined. We encourage you to stay involved with CNU through campus and alumni events, as well as new alumni chapters.
