Pancake Breakfast of the Year?

By Pam Good, Manhattan UMC

Free dinner for Manhattan

It is often said that "there's no such thing as a free lunch." Maybe not, but Manhattan United Methodist Church is inviting the whole village to a free spaghetti dinner. The dinner will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, April 26 in the church at 335 East North Street and everyone is welcome. The church especially wants to use this dinner to honor the work of Noreen Bormet, Tammy Hurley, and Karleen Kendall of the Manhattan Food Pantry for their years of helping to feed families in the community.

The hearty spaghetti meal will be served up by the church's administrative council and volunteers from the church membership.

When United Methodist Bishop Hee-Soo Jung visited the Manhattan church in November, he challenged members to give back unconditionally to their community. "There is some way you need to serve them," he said, and the church took him literally with their plan to serve a meal to the village.

"We will open our doors and extend God's grace to the community," Pastor Becky Williams said. "In tough financial times, the church wants to be able to help the community wherever we can."

Planning for a dinner which will feed a village is a challenge, but church members have faith that no one will go hungry.

"God's economy is full of abundance," Bishop Hee-Soo Jung said, during his visit. "Celebrate God's abundance."

The church is handicap-accessible and parking is available in the lot behind the church and on streets around the church. For more information, call 815-478-3285 or check out the church's Facebook page.
