Students Work to Restore Coastal Habitat

As part of an ecosystem restoration lesson in October, Environmental Science Laboratory students got firsthand experience in restoring a local park. In Little Bayou Wilderness Park, between Coquina Key and Pinellas Point, 100 students spent two days cutting out invasive trees, pulling out smaller invasive weeds, picking up trash, skimming garbage out of a pond, and planting nearly 100 native plants to help bring the park back toward its more natural state.

"This is the third semester the lab classes have participated, using their classroom knowledge and hard work to help restore the ecological functions of this park," said Jim Krest, course instructor and environmental science faculty member at USFSP.

Students Create Voter Guide
Journalism students worked with the League of Women Voters of the St. Petersburg Area to create a voter guide with candidate information. Assistant Professor of Journalism Monica Ancu Postelnicu, who researches the use of online technologies in political campaigns, advised the students on the project.
