The Lay Marianist Daily Reflection

Our new Facebook page, Lay Marianist, has attracted some followers. Everyday there is a one or two sentence reflection posted on Lay Marianist.

If you don't have a Facebook account - here is another way for you to read the daily reflections.  Read the
blog called Ponderings. It can be found at http://poetaj.wordpress.com/.

Google God

National Public Radio carried a report last week on the use of iPads, those tablet computers that can do almost everything but clean the dishes. They featured a dad who reads bedtime stories with interactive features to his three year old. There was some harsh reaction to the story from those who condemn technology as a march to passive entertainment. Some people cannot conceive of life without the pages, ink, binding, smell and thickness of a real book in hand.

There is a parallel in this as to where God is going. Many of us experience God through the trappings of liturgy. We know God through vestments, incense, sacred music, altar and steeple. We know God through prayer, meditation, poetry, rosaries, art, Lectio Divina and the Bible. We know God through friends, family, neighbors, sisters, priests, ministers and relationship.

But can we know God through technology?

I invite you to consider our newer communities of young adults who are meeting and growing in faith through e-mails, blogs and Skype. I invite you to consider the Our Lady of the Round Table Community, a truly international conglomeration of women who have grown so close that they all met in Ireland last year to affirm their commitment to one another. I invite you to look at the improvements Matt Dunn has made to our website.  I invite you to look at the new website for the North American Center for Marianist Studies.  I invite you to Facebook where a discussion on our elections is being held on the Lay Marianist page. I invite you to the Marianists who are communicating through Twitter. I invite you to listen (see the instructions below) to our candidates answer questions during a conference call held last Saturday.

I invite you to our future.

We will not kick the past to the curb. We will continue to be nourished through face to face community meetings and other encounters. We will continue to worship in liturgy and prayer. We will continue building personal relationships, but we will also look for and find our God through the wonders of technology used to build the Kingdom. From the clicking of the beads to the clicking of the mouse we will move into a future filled with Grace.

peace and love,

aj

REST IN PEACE

by June Lussier

John Wagner, loving husband of Judy, member of the Magnificat community, Family of Mary Lay Community of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, died peacefully in hospital, on January 14, 2011, at the age of 74.

John was a kind, gentle, and quiet man whose favorite pastime was supporting his children, three girls, in all of their endeavors. He recently got much joy out of spending time with his only grandchild, his infant granddaughter, Danica.

After retiring he enjoyed a relaxing game of golf, fishing, armchair sports and a challenging game of Scrabble.  Together John and Judy enjoyed life with their family, friends, Parish and the Lay Marianist faith communities.  John was Judy's right hand man as navigator to Magnificat meetings and in her position as leader of our group.

They have been very active members of the Magnificat group for many years.

In the last few years John has had many health issues one of which was leukemia.  John received a Special Volunteer award in May 2003 from the Canadian Cancer Society Manitoba Division in appreciation for his dedication in helping the Society achieve its Mission.  After he went into remission he gave very personal support and care to other people who were fighting the same kind of cancer.

He was a man who will be missed by many people.

Please keep John, his wife Judy and their family in your prayers.

Editor's Reflection  By Jacqui Griswold

Here is an inspirational article on pursuing hospitality that especially spoke to me, I hope you find it equally inspiring.

"... hospitality is a hallmark of Christian living. .... But its meaning goes deeper than being a gracious host or opening our homes to guests.

The Greek word translated "hospitality" means "love of strangers".  When Paul speaks of being "given to hospitality" he is calling us to pursue relationships with people who are in need.  It is not an easy task.

Writer Henri Nouwen likens it to reaching out to those we meet on our way through life - people who may be estranged from their culture, country, friends, family or even from God.  Nouwen writes:  "Hospitality, therefore, means primarily the creation of a free space where the stranger can enter and become a friend instead of an enemy.  Hospitality is not to change people, but to offer them space where change can take place."

.. we can welcome others as a way of showing our love for them and for Christ.  Hospitality is making room for people in need."  - David McCasland
