I Am Not Imagining Things
It is hard to imagine anything right now. I'm too busy. My busyness crowds out my creative thought and relegates me from project to project mindlessly trying to get another item off of my to do list. This past week we (the Leadership Team and others):
- prepared for and completed our fall MLNNA Leadership Team call (we will post minutes when they are ready),
- prepared and shipped out for printing our annual mailing to you (many of you will receive this electronically to save money),
- kicked off our strategic planning to be done gratis by Tony Fitzgerald (we continue to look for ways to better serve you and move the Marianist Family into action) (and thank you Tony),
- began preparations for the Marianist Family Council Meeting in November (this is where Kay Stone and I represent you to the larger Marianist Family as we find ways to work together in a discipleship of equals),
- met with members of the Young Adult Initiative to discern how we can be more inclusive and helpful to our young adult members,
- continued formation with our students at the University of Dayton,
- attended a panel discussion on Capital Punishment co-sponsored by the Marianist Social Justice Collaborative,
- prepared for the Marianist World Day of Prayer,
- panicked about problems with our web site, (still working on this one), and
- watched the to do list grow!
Thus, Joan and I are taking a long weekend to regroup (Thanks Mark for staying at the house and watching the dog.) so that the next time I write to you I will not only wish you peace but I will be in a peaceful place to write something much more creative.
peace and love,
aj

Indianapolis Adele Social Justice Project Immersion September 17-19th by Deb Hirt
In college at the University of Dayton, building community always seemed so natural, easy, and convenient. I lived with friends, joined social justice clubs with like-minded peers, and walked down the street to worship. And of course Marianist brothers and sisters living next door or teaching in the classroom made the meaning of community even more real. In the years after UD, building community in the "real world" has been challenging to say the least, especially after moving several times. The Adele Social Justice Project in Indianapolis was an outstanding opportunity to connect with young adults in Indianapolis who felt a similar longing for a stronger connection to those around us and to our city.

Eighteen of us came together for the weekend at St. Bernadette's parish - a former Catholic school in a struggling east-side neighborhood. Throughout the weekend, ASJP core team members led talks and activities on "Saying Yes," "Living Simply," and "Passion for the mission." Each participant brought a unique richness to discussions as we dialogued about how these Marianist values can be further incorporated into our life and work. Guest speakers shared their perspectives on challenges Indianapolis faces, ranging from struggling Catholic schools, to the cycle of poverty, to the role of business and government.
Groups also did service projects at Cathedral Soup Kitchen, Urban Mountain Farms and La Plaza. Perhaps most importantly, we balanced reflection and dialogue with a lot of laughter and fun.
As part of the core team, our months of preparation came together in weekend far better than I ever could have hoped. I'm so thankful for the time and energy of all who participated - and I'm looking forward to meeting monthly as we continue to build community.

Winnipeg Marianist Family Retreat by Isabella Moyer
Pati Krasensky (Associate Director for NACMS - Philadelphia office) was welcomed to Winnipeg by 30 members from the local MLC and SM communities for a day of retreat at St. Benedict`s Monastery.
The theme for the day was `Creating a Seamless Garment of Faith and Family`. Pati skilfully wove our Marianist charism, our Catholic faith, and her own family experiences into her presentations. Her warm and honest approach provided a comfortable environment for sharing moments throughout the day. She confirmed the gifts and the challenges of family life. She quoted a document from the Catholic Women`s League of Canada, `your faith must be clearly seen`. This means, `if I want my children to be more faithful, I need to be more faithful. If I want my parents to be more patient, I must practice patience with them.` We must all keep holding on to our faith for our own sake, and for the sake of our families. And, we must do it with the tenacity of Blessed Chaminade`s image of the brook!
Fr. John Kratcher, SM presided over the Eucharistic Liturgy. The community was united with our sisters and brothers in Haiti through the Prayers of the Faithful, offered up through the intercession of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. (Marianist World Day of Prayer, 2010)

MLNNA SUPPORT ***** NOTE we have changed our online provider ******
You can support your Network of Lay Marianists either through the on-line secure link to JUST GIVE or via mail. Network for Good our previous provider increased their service fees and we felt that we needed to find an alternative service provider.
Your contributions support projects: * to assist lay community development (MLFI), * social justice through Marianist Social Justice Collaborative (MSJC) * our administrative office support which allowed us to print and distribute the new brochures on Characteristics of Lay Marianists. This infrastructure also allowed us to quickly collect and distribute funds to our brothers and sisters in Haiti following the earthquake. Link to JUST GIVE NOTE we have changed our online provider for secure donations due to increase in processing fees. In order to be good stewards of our funds, we have identified an alternative. Please note the Network for Good website is no longer active in case you bookmarked the previous link. orIf you prefer to donate using the US Mail, please send checks made payable to MLNNA. Mailing address is:

NACMS On-Line Courses
We invite you to take some time this fall and winter and reflect on what it means to be a member of the Marianist Family. The North American Center for Marianist Studies (NACMS) provides the following online virtual learning courses (vlc) Justice, Leadership, and Prayer to participation and reflection.
The goals of the vlc are twofold: 1) to explore Marianist concepts and 2) to build community through reflection and interaction on course content.
Winter Courses which will run from October 24-November 27 (Register NOW thru October 20)
Winter Course Descriptions
Leadership There are over 58,000 books on leadership at Amazon.com. If you change your search to "servant leadership" the number dwindles to about 400. We narrow our focus even more in this course as we look to writings on Father Chaminade's teachings regarding leadership and integrate these thoughts with contemporary servant leadership skills.
Justice How did you feel after reading the headlines this morning? Overwhelmed? Angry? Alone? Our course on Marianist Social Justice reminds us of the long journey Marianists have taken together to fight for Social Justice around the world. This might not be a term that was spoken in our Founders time, but standing for equality was witnessed in their actions. This course allows us to remember where the Marianist Family started as we share our hopes and dreams for the future.
Prayer Father Chaminade writes that faith "is the most useful of all the virtues." . . . God's truth, for those who receive it with simplicity of heart, penetrates to the core, dispelling pretense and obscurity. It causes us to pass "from darkness into God's marvelous light." (1 Pet 2: 9) Let's gather to enrich and enliven our prayer lives together.
(All courses provided in continuing education format. Registration fee $40.)
How Do I Register? To register, visit http://vlc.udayton.edu/register, and when asked for the Diocese/Partner to which you belong, select "North American Center for Marianist Studies (NACMS)" in the registration field. Class size will be limited to 12 participants. Basic computer skills are required, and it is important for participants to keep up with course content. |

Editor's Reflection By Jacqui Griswold
Community - how do we build and nurture it? If you haven't read the THINGS MARIANIST publication "What Are Chaminade's Principals for Community Building?" by Thomas Giardino, SM I highly recommend it. It provides a clear simple outline of the values and purpose of the Marianist charism of community. It speaks of the vision which Father Chaminade had and the call to be a Missionary Apostolic. In saying 'yes' to this he said 'no' to becoming a bishop or pastor.
I can really relate as I'm sure you can too. All the demands for our time. Where and what do we spend our life energy on? I have determined that another term as Communication Coordinator/editor of the E-news is not what I'm being called to right now. However, I did participate in the Indianapolis Adele Project mentioned earlier in this newsletter and am very happy that the group plans to continue and I will be a part of this new endevour.
How are you spending your time? How are you being called to be a missionary in your world?
 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
This is YOUR news. What's happening with your community? The purpose of this communication is to share happening that may inspire other lay Marianists.
Send me a summary of what you are doing. If you have any suggestions to make the E-news better, I'm open to hearing from you :> Keep your text short and describe who, what, why, when and how. Deadline for the next E-news is Nov 9. If possible provide a digital picture (JPEG format 100 - 900K) with your news story. Send to Jacqui Griswold, MLNNA editor
Thanks for reading to the end. |
