I work in an office. More and more we are using teleconferences to conduct our business.  Here is a 'Dilbert' type interpretation of how some days go.  I thought those who have been on calls with multiple people would enjoy.

BONJOUR!!

AJ Wagner, President of MLNNA
AJ Wagner
It is called the Centre Marianiste d'ducation de la Foi. It is located in Saint-Henri, Qubec, Canada, just a few miles from Qubec City. It is a special place, a holy place, where vowed and lay Marianists work together to bring Christ to the world. This past weekend the Centre celebrated its tenth year of developing and running formation programs in community, prayer, faith, evangelism, sacrament, healing and more.

Over the past ten years hundreds of volunteers have made the Centre viable while working in a pastoral atmosphere along the banks of the Etchemin River. Here is where the idea of a discipleship of equals comes alive thus making Blessed William Joseph Chaminade's dream of community into a success story.

In his book, Origins of the Marianist Family, Eduardo Benlloch, SM, writes of Chaminade's sodalities as "a mystery of grace, of struggle against evil and the total victory of good."  He continues,
"The missionary project of Father Chaminade was to re-Christianize France as a Missionary Apostolic. The parish was the organization to develop Christianity. The sodality of Father Chaminade was composed of every class of persons and its purpose was to re-Christianize France through the influence of good, to re-weave the tapestry of Christianity in society."

The how and why of it, according to Benlloch:
"As we have said he thought of the ideal community as that which is presented in the Acts of the Apostles. Within that community the men and the women evangelized each other, slowly forming each other in faith while at the same time drawing others to be part of the community. It was the community itself through its lifestyle that brought about conversions."

The anniversary celebration of the Centre Marianiste consisted of workshops, food, Mass with the Bishop and a musical celebration led by the La Famille Roberge-Dion, the Marianist equivalent of the Trapp Family from the Sound of Music. "Alleluia" was sung more times than an Easter Week marathon.

And why not. The struggle against evil was being won by every class of persons in a place where "Missionnaire Apostolique" is well understood.

peace and love,

aj

NACMS On-Line Courses
NACMSWe invite you to take some time this fall and winter and reflect on what it means to be a member of the Marianist Family. The North American Center for Marianist Studies (NACMS) provides the following online virtual learning courses (vlc) Justice, Leadership, and Prayer to participation and reflection.

The goals of the vlc are twofold: 1) to explore Marianist concepts and 2) to build community through reflection and interaction on course content.

Winter Courses which will run from October 24-November 27
(Register NOW Sept 7 thru October 20)

Winter Course Descriptions

Leadership
There are over 58,000 books on leadership at Amazon.com. If you change your search to "servant leadership" the number dwindles to about 400. We narrow our focus even more in this course as we look to writings on Father Chaminade's teachings regarding leadership and integrate these thoughts with contemporary servant leadership skills.

Justice
How did you feel after reading the headlines this morning? Overwhelmed? Angry? Alone? Our course on Marianist Social Justice reminds us of the long journey Marianists have taken together to fight for Social Justice around the world. This might not be a term that was spoken in our Founders time, but standing for equality was witnessed in their actions. This course allows us to remember where the Marianist Family started as we share our hopes and dreams for the future.

Prayer
Father Chaminade writes that faith "is the most useful of all the virtues."  . . . God's truth, for those who receive it with simplicity of heart, penetrates to the core, dispelling pretense and obscurity. It causes us to pass "from darkness into God's marvelous light." (1 Pet 2: 9) Let's gather to enrich and enliven our prayer lives together.

(All courses provided in continuing education format. Registration fee $40.)

How Do I Register?
To register, visit http://vlc.udayton.edu/register, and when asked for the Diocese/Partner to which you belong, select "North American Center for Marianist Studies (NACMS)" in the registration field. Class size will be limited to 12 participants. Basic computer skills are required, and it is important for participants to keep up with course content.

Your contributions support projects:

  * to assist lay community development (MLFI),
  * social justice through Marianist Social Justice Collaborative (MSJC)
  * our administrative office support which allowed us to print and distribute the new brochures on Characteristics of Lay Marianists.  This infrastructure also allowed us to quickly collect and distribute funds to our brothers and sisters in Haiti following the earthquake.

Editor's Reflection
By Jacqui Griswold

Praying for Rain.
Earth
My yard is so dry and my flowers have no color due to the consecutive days of 90 degree temperatures and no rain.  I remember in the Spring when it seemed that we were getting rain every other day - one of the wettest on record while the month of August was the driest in history.

For what do we pray?  For the people in Pakistan who are suffering with severe flooding? Or the soldiers serving in the 100+ degree heat in Afghanistan.  We are a global community where the needs of my family here in Indiana are known but also the problems and suffering of people all over the world come to me in news reports everyday.  Our local Carmelite monastery had a ministry called "Pray the News".  I think this is a good way to handle all the news that we now receive.  It doesn't make the prayer for my immediate need any less but it helps me to keep perspective and bringing to prayer all those I hear about each day.

May you find a silent time each day to reflect and pray for our global community.

===================================
You may notice that this month's newsletter is being sent a few days late.(Normally it is sent 2nd Friday of each month)  I just returned from a wonderful vacation in northern Wisconsin and wasn't able to get it all together before I left.  I hope you also may find time to get away from your everyday routine to gain a fresh perspective on life.

Like AJ, I have been praying about the coming MLNNA election and whether to put my name in for nomination for another term.  Like many others, I push the limits of the time given to make a decision.  Please pray for my discernment and peace with the decision.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
This is YOUR news.  What's happening with your community?  The purpose of this communication is to share happening that may inspire other lay Marianists about things which might be replicated and also just to help connect us across the miles.

Send me a summary of what you are doing.  If you have any suggestions to make the E-news better, I'm open to hearing from you :>

Keep your text short and describe who, what, why, when and how.
Deadline for the next E-news is  Oct. 5.  If possible provide a digital picture (JPEG format 100 - 900K) with your news story.  Send to Jacqui Griswold, MLNNA editor

Thanks for reading to the end.
