Go Ahead and Take That Big Step
AJ Wagner, President of MLNNA
 | The fortune inside my cookie said, "Go ahead and take that big step." Since I have been trying to discern a few important matters in my life this seemed like good advice. The problem was it didn't tell me in which direction I should go. Without direction I was back to where I started - trying to determine God's will.
MLNNA has elections coming up in the Fall, the President's job is on the ballot. I have also been asked by some political and community leaders in Dayton, Ohio to run for Mayor in 2013.
I cannot do both jobs effectively so I am trying to determine in which direction I should go. Both are big steps. Further, I cannot rule out the possibility that I should be doing something else altogether.
Blessed William Joseph Chaminade has some excellent advice in this area. In his book, Our Marianist Heritage (available through NACMS), Joseph Stefenelli, S.M. outlines some of the steps our male founder would go through when seeking God's will.
First, of course, is prayer. Not just the prayer of asking God for some wisdom, but the prayer of listening to God - the prayer of silence.
Second, is seeking spiritual direction through a trained individual, someone who can keep the focus on scripture and who can remove cluttered thinking.
Third, is to take it to community and be open to the thoughts, ideas and experience of others.
There are two MLNNA positions up for election - President and Communications Director. Their job descriptions are below. Won't you please join me in discerning if God is calling you to serve in one of these positions? It is important that our members have choices for these offices. Perhaps you are a young adult that can bring fresh perspective to these positions, perhaps you have ideas that need to be considered, or perhaps you just want to take a more active part in this ministry. Think about it. Pray about it. Seek some guidance and take it to your community.
If you have a question or if you decide to give it a go, contact Marge Cavanaugh or Pati Krasensky who are Nominating Committee members and they will tell you more.
In the meantime, don't use fortune cookies for direction.
peace and love, aj

Fundraiser for Haiti By Marian Zgodinski On January 12, 2010, an extremely powerful earthquake struck the country of Haiti. As news of this event hit the television channels of American homes, teenagers like Alyssa Hunnell, Marian Zgodinski and Leah Hunnell were in class at Villa Angela- Saint Joseph, a relatively small Marianist and Ursuline high school in Cleveland, Ohio. As the students returned home later that day, their parents informed them of the devastating event and they watched the breaking news coverage of the event for the rest of the evening. The next day at school was relatively the same, but with added prayers for those who were suffering from the outcomes of the earthquake. The students talked about the earthquake and shared some of their thoughts in class, but the Peer Ministry Coordinator, Mrs. Jill Latkovich, thought it would be more appropriate if Alyssa, M arian and Leah thought up a plan to Leah Hunnell, Marian Zgodinski, Alyssa Hunnell
really inform the students and faculty at VASJ of what had happened to the neighboring country of Haiti, just south of the United States.
With the help of a couple of other students, the three students, Alyssa, Marian and Leah, constructed an inspiring PowerPoint presentation featuring a fundraiser titled "S.O.S. Skip One Snack." The program was designed to inform the student body and faculty about the impact of the earthquake on the Haitian people and to then pose the question, "Could you skip one snack today and donate your money to Haiti, instead?" The three girls were allowed to present the slide show to every Religion class, hung flyers in the hallways, and put money-collecting jars all around the school and cafeteria to encourage the students to donate their money to this very important cause.
Much to the surprise of Alyssa, Marian and Leah, the school and faculty alone donated more than a thousand dollars for the country of Haiti. More importantly, the presentation hit the heart of every person who watched the PowerPoint presentation and the school as a whole finally appreciated how lucky and fortunate they are. Alyssa, Marian and Leah hope the money they raised was beneficial to the country of Haiti in their time of need.
Villa Angela-Saint Joseph High School is a Catholic community building 21st century leaders in the Ursuline and Marianist traditions.

FEEDBACK requested on Continental Assembly Ke Aloha, Ka Pono, Ka Ohana
View of Diamondhead from Chaminade University chapel.
Would anyone who attended the Hawaii Assembly last month take a few minutes and fill out the evaluation form and mail it in so the leadership team will have your opinions to pass on to the next planning team? In my opinion
The next Assembly date and location have not yet been fixed. We have tried to follow a cycle of providing a gathering every 3 years unless there is some other big meeting like last year's International Marianist Lay Community meeting. There has been some discussion about a possible joint Lay Assembly in conjunction with SM and FMI gathering in the future.

Editor's Reflection By Jacqui Griswold
The Continental Assembly in Hawaii last month was awesome.
I looked at all of my pictures and chose the one with the 3 Founder puppets because no one picture captured all the feelings I had about the experience as much as this one. To me it says "Hawaii, Marianist, community, Fun, and spiritual enrichment".
I learned about the true Hawaiian culture and not just the cliche aspects that most tourist experience.
The prayer services were among the best that I have experienced. The professional caliber of musicians and the attention to the multiple languages of the participants made it feel that all were being welcomed. I extend my sincere thank-you to the lay Marianist of Hawaii who gave hundreds of hours over the last 2 years planning the event and made this such a rich experience for me.
=================================== What's happening with your community? Send me a summary of what you are doing that might be educational or inspirational. If you have any suggestions to make the E-news better, I'm open to hearing from you :> Keep copy short and describe who, what, why, when and how. Deadline for the next E-news is September 7. If possible provide a digital picture (JPEG format 100 - 900K) with your news story. Send to Jacqui Griswold, MLNNA editor
Thanks for reading to the end. |
