"YOU WOWED THEM"

It only happens every few years, so it is always special when the Society of Mary gathers in assembly. This past week more than 300 of our religious brothers met in Louisville, Kentucky under the banner "Gather at the River." The assembly was a chance to install the new Provincial Council with Father Marty Solma as the new S.M. leader as well as the chance to kick off implementation of the new strategic plan "Vision 20/20: Apostolic Imagination and Daring."

We were represented well by Lay Marianists from several different venues: Brian Reavey from the LIFE Program, Denise O'Conner, a Lay Marianist from Sykesville, Maryland, Larry Keller, Principal, St. John Vianney High School in St. Louis, and Dean Lisa Kloppenberg, a member of the Marianist Education Associates at the University of Dayton. These wonderful Lay Marianists spoke to the brothers about how collaboration is working, and working well, in their respective areas. In addition, Brother Bob Wiethorn, SM of Cincinnati and Sister Nicole Trahan, FMI told of how collaboration was working in their areas. By the time they were done speaking the brothers were wowed!

They were impressed by what was being done to carry on the charism in and throughout the lay world. They understand, and are enthusiastic about the understanding, that it will be the lay branch of the Marianist Family where much of the charism will reside in the future.

The brothers were reminded that there were 120 people in the Upper Room at the first Pentecost including Mary. There were women. There were men. There were apostles. There were lay people. "Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were ALL filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim."  (Acts 2:2-4 emphasis added)
AJ_May_08

We have been invited to collaborate with each other but we have no choice. We are called by the Spirit, by a fire that cannot be quenched. Mary will not let that happen. The only thing that can happen is Apostolic Imagination and Daring. The Spirit demands no less.

peace and love,

  aj

P.S. My thanks to those who responded to last months request for collaboration ideas. There were many good observations and suggestions that we will discern among ourselves and with the brothers and sisters as we move on.

Marianist Lay Community Gives Service to Catholic Worker House

By Susan Vogt

The Anawim Community of greater Cincinnati recently committed to planning, preparing, and serving one meal a month at the local Catholic Worker House. We chose this ministry partly as a way to serve the poor and marginalized but also in remembrance of Fr. Mark Schmieder who died this past year and was a founder of this CW house.  Three to 4 different members of our community serve each month. Mark was a diocesan priest who was a member of our community and also worked as a prison chaplain for many years. The community also recently co-hosted a local listening assembly to gather the voices of faithful Catholics in the Cincinnati area about their concerns and hopes for the Catholic Church of the future. Results will be included with hundreds of other local listening sessions being held around the country culminating in a mega assembly on Pentecost weekend, 2011, in Detroit.

Jim Vogt, Susan Vogt and Mary Repaske serve meal to a guest.

Editor's Reflection
By Jacqui Griswold

I recently 'read' the book (on tape)  "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle".  This is the story of a family who decides to eat only locally grown foods for 1 year.  The point of the book is to raise awareness of where our food comes from, the loss of heritage varieties of vegetables and the benefits of eating local.

Some people are boycotting BP gas stations in response to the oil spill.  I've decided to try and be more conscious of where the foods I'm buying are from.  Consider all the fossil fuel it takes to provide year round access to all fruits and vegetables.

I've started visiting a farmer's market and also noticing that the grocery stores do label the source of most of their produce.   I've told my mom I'd like to work with her when she cans vegetables from their garden so I can learn how to do this.

The dollars we spend do 'vote' for how we want the world to be used.   I am hoping that the more I do this the easier it will be as I learn some new skills and change existing habits.

"If every US citizen ate just one meal a week (any meal) composed of locally and organically raised meats and produce, we would reduce our country's oil consumption by over 1.1 million barrels of oil every week.  That's not gallons, but barrels.  Small changes in buying habits can make big differences."  emphasis added, from  p. 5  "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" by Barbara Kingsolver
