Jacqui Griswold, Editor of the MLNNA E-News was recently
involved in an accident that has required extensive surgery to her leg with
more surgery to follow. She is recuperating and unable to produce this month's
E-News so we have put together this special edition. Please keep Jacqui in your
prayers.
The second article below was prepared earlier this week for
publication in this special edition of the E-News. If you have a moment please
read it. It is important. But this weeks tragedy makes the following message more important.

Serious Earthquake
Strikes Haiti
Many Feared Dead or
Injured
Marianist
Communities sustain heavy damage, but it seems all are safe
News From the General
Administration
Society of Mary
January 2010
By now you have undoubtedly heard
that a strong earthquake rocked the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince and its surrounding areas.
There is extensive damage, many injuries, and authorities are warning that
there is "serious loss of life" expected. Many have enquired as to the status
of the members of the Society of Mary who are serving in Haiti, as well
as those in formation and the lay people with whom they work. While it is very
difficult to communicate, since most means of communication are inoperative, we
did make contact earlier today with Bro. Hervé Guillo Du Bodan, SM, Master of
Novices. We spoke to him from Rome by telephone
at dawn, Haiti
time. They still do not have complete information but here is what is known so
far:
1.
The earthquake occurred about 5:00 in the afternoon on Tuesday,
January 12, 2010.
2.
There were no deaths or serious injuries among our brothers,
novices or pre-novices. They were fortunate to escape, in some cases jumping
off a balcony to get out of the building. They consider their safe evacuation
nothing short of miraculous.
3.
The novitiate building is totally crushed and the recently
acquired prenovitiate has become inaccessible, but the "large building" remains
standing.
4.
Fr. Gustave Lamontagne, SM, who was visiting from Canada was away
from the city at the time of the earthquake. There has been no word from him.
While there still will be concern until we make contact with him, the area of
the country where he is does not seem to have been seriously damaged. This is
considered a second "miracle" since the room he was occupying in Port-au-Prince is
currently between two concrete slabs.
5.
All of the people are living in the streets since the buildings
are not considered safe to enter.
6.
We have made contact with some members of the local MLC and so far
all are thought to have survived.
7.
The center of the city of Port-au-Prince
is, in great measure, destroyed. The Presidential Palace and the Cathedral were
among those structures most damaged. Most schools have collapsed and, as one
might imagine, transportation, communication and other vital services are in
tatters.
We share this information with
you because many have expressed concern and worry about the Marianists and the
people of Haiti
in General. We encourage your support and assistance in any way possible and,
above all, ask for your prayers for the people who are so devastated by this
latest tragedy.
The Marianist
Lay Network of North America (MLNNA) has made their online donation site available for
donations for Haiti Relief. A specific PROGRAM DESIGNATION is assigned for
HAITI HURRICANE RELIEF.
The Lay Marianist Communities of Haiti are members of the MLNNA. All money
received will be transferred to our Marianist Family in Haiti via the Society of Mary and Lay Marianist
Communities in Québec, Canada who have been our liaisons to the Family
of Mary in Haiti.
They will use the funds for earthquake relief.

A FEW OBSERVATIONS
First, Saint Francis of Assisi believed in humility in a way that few
human beings ever have. By forsaking all of his worldly goods he placed himself
in a position of having to beg for his daily sustenance. Francis humbled
himself daily to beg for what he and others needed as a means of humbling
himself before God.
Second, Marianists aren't very good about asking for help.
We are thrilled to give help, but asking for and taking help are not in our
nature.
I am a Marianist through and through and I do not have near
the humility of Saint Francis. Nonetheless, I must humbly ask for your help.
As with the rest of the world, times are hard. Times are
hard for our brothers in the Society of Mary whose resources are dwindling due
to reduced donor contributions, reduced income from its members who have
reached retirement and increased health care expenses for the aging brothers.
Our sisters in the Daughters of Mary face similar problems as, with the
brothers, they try to hang on to their good works already in progress.
When I became president of MLNNA it was with the hope that
we could pick up the tab on those programs operated by our brothers and sisters
for the benefit of our Family's lay members. Programs such as the Lay Formation
Initiative, LIFE, the Adele Social Justice Project, the Marianist Social
Justice Collaborative and others are essentially lay programs whose funding is
becoming more and more difficult for the brothers to sustain. Unfortunately, MLNNA
can barely meet its meager office expenses as our fundraising has dwindled to
about one-third of what it was two years ago.
So I come before you to ask your financial assistance for
the Marianist Family to which you belong. I ask for you to consider any gift
within your means for the Society of Mary, the Daughters of Mary Immaculate or
the Marianist Lay Network. If a single gift is out of your reach, five or ten
dollars a month would be greatly appreciated. Below are the links to our
donation pages.

I also humbly beg your assistance in making MLNNA more
meaningful for its members. If you have suggestions, I would like to hear them.
If you can volunteer, we could use your help. Let me know at aj@marianistfamily.org.
